Since I am in the process of buying some new in-lines, I'm finding this
topic of particular interest.

Unlike some of the other members of the list, my problem is just the
opposite; I have big flat feet. One of the sports stores I went to
mentioned that Birkenstock has inserts (they are supposed to be just
like the soles of the shoes and sandals), and since I live in my
Birkies, I wonder if anyone else on the list had tried this solution.

The technique is correct abeit tough on the sheets. Try using a hair-blower (on
high)
and heat the inside of the skates. Lace them up and wear them for 1/2 hour. Repeat
for
as long as your feet can take (ice bath for feet after this). It took me three days
to break
in a pair of Baur 5000's using this technique. I had the trunks of my old skates
blown off
by a slap-shot and needed to have another pair for the next week's game. The skates
felt
great by the next game.

Jennie, this is from one newbie to another--

Over a year ago, as a complete and utter beginner, I took a couple of roller
hockey clinics. The instructor said that we needed cups-- girls and women
too. I posted here about this (I thought maybe the instructor was joking or
something) and guess what? Women need pelvic protection too. Our pelvic
bones are right under the skin in our crotches, and a whack with a stick or a
bump on the boards as you're climbing over for your shift can be painful.

It's usual for leagues and clinics to require, or at least suggest,
pelvic protection for girls and women. The device you want is called
a pelvic protector or a "jill", and it looks somewhat like the male version
but flatter.

So don't assume that "cup required" means that the league is for boys
only.

Someone asked if my parents game to the usa canada game with me, I never said
I went to a us/can game, I wanted to but I didn't. My mom went to all of my
games and my dad went to most of them. They don't watch the womens hockey
mainly because they haven't been home while I was watching the tape.
And about getting on the waiting list or starting a team and stuff, I still
can't do it, I have no way to get to fort collins 30 miles away, or even into
my own town. And plus theres always the money, I don't have the money to buy
equipment, or even the league fee. My parents wouldn't pay for most of it
anyways. What gets me is that my dad and brother hunt, and they buy all the
equipment for my brother, which has been at least over 500 dollars. They
wouldn't even buy me a pair of skates.
There is some good news though, the spring recreation book came out
yesterday and hockey was in there, starts the end of next month which is cool,
excpet I'll miss the first practice since I'll be on my band trip. And Adult
hockey is coming in the fall, along with the regular youth hockey which I will
be too old for, hopefully I can get into that. Oh yea, there's a new rink,
well actually a new location, in a bigger, newer untrashed parking lot, which
will be awesome. I can't wait, too bad its still another month.
Yea I know wearing skates that are 2 sizes too big probably isn't the best
idea, but one of these days I will stop laying around and try to figure out
some way to get them to fit better, its weird, on the lower part they get too
tight sometimes but I rarely ever get it tight enough around the ankles. I
have another pair of skates, I'd use them, but they've had their share of wear
from all the crashes, theres one spot on the right skate where its worn down
so much you can see through it, of course thats partly from playing goalie.
And the bearings on them are really junky, plus they're the buckle kind, which
is pretty much worthless in hockey since they can be unbuckled at any time.
One last thing, I admit it, I'm out of shape, mainly since I don't have gym
anymore. But can anybody give me some ideas on how to get back in shape,
besides running, I can't stand running, and running where I live, is really
bad on the knees and ankles, since the land is so uneven. Thanks

I agree. If there is going to be a women's pro league started, regardless of
how we might feel about it's potential, we should support it to be sure that
it doesn't fail.

Sleeping in my skates? hmmmm don't think I'll try that one, I can't even sleep
comfortably in jeans, skates would be a major problem. I'd probably wake up
with bruises all over my shins. and I'd get out of bed and probably fall on my
head, since they're roller hockey skates. Thanks for the idea, but I don't
think I will be trying it. The blow dryer idea, maybe. except I am rarely ever
standing up for a long perdiod of time, well unless I'm playing ping pong, but
playiing ping pong in roller blades is probably not a good idea. If only
breaking in skates was as easy as breaking in a baseball mitt, well except
I've had my glove for 6 or 7 years and its still not broken in, of course I
lost it for a year there, but still.
While we're on the advice thing, I have another question. Last season I
played in knee pads, since shin pads weren't required, you could have either
shin pads or knee pads, it didn't matter. and well my knee pads are falling
apart, I had to tape them a couple games just so the foam didn't come out. So
I will have to buy new ones here pretty soon. I never did get whacked in the
shins, but should I stick with just the knee pads or switch over to shin pads?

I just got the hockey digest April issue (2 months early) and theres an
article about the womens olympic team. I read the first 3 or 4 paragraphs, and
I must ask. What is it with writers always bringing it up with the mens, or
comparing it to mens. It starts off saying how pros are debuting, and how it
will be memorable. Then it goes into the womens hockey saying about its
significance.
Most articles I've seen that aren't from womens sports magazines are like
this. whats up with that? can't people just quit comparing the men and women,
it gets old.

Try jumping rope. My daughters are all into it, and even though it sounds
like the house is going to collapse, their stamina is improved. You can
even get weighted jump ropes for that extra push. Wear shoes with good
support.

more questions...
I've got el cheapo CCM Rapides. The foot part fits ok, what's killing me is
the metal panel on the back of the ankle upwards. My back-of-leg curves
outward, it won't. Any ideas to make that "softer" or more conforming? I
wear a wrist sweatband for cushioning, but it falls down. I've only had the
skates on about a dozen times. At the ripe age of 42, /playing hockey/ or
even /skating well/ isn't as important as comfort!

Hello! I just wanted to introduce myself :> I'm Erin... I'm 17 and I live
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida!

I have been follwing hockey for a few years now, and I am very pleased to
see that Women's hockey is picking up. Actually, being where I am, I am
just glad to see hockey pick up! We only have about 4 rinks in the
Broward county area, with only two rinks that sponsors Girls teams
(although, the nice fee of $600 is enough to steer you away).

We do have tons of roller hockey here and *finally* there will be a
women's league where I am. For any of you gals in West Broward county in
Florida, The Weston Area Roller Hockey League is sponsoring two teams.
You can call 954-389-2665 for information :>

Just wanted to say hello! :>

Subject: Canada - Loss to USA expected!!

I've been sitting on the sidelines reading all of the many comments over the
past few months..and I've remained quiet. I'm impressed at the amount of
hockey knowledge and astute comments! It's great!

So I thought I would throw out some information for your thoughts....This will
definitely generate discussion.

Well..obviously everyone saw Canada's loss to the US today....and I'd have to
say it wasn't unexpected. Despite the confidence that many of you have
displayed in Reddon and Manon's abilities...it has been obvious for the last
18 months that they just don't have the skills to play solid "consistent" goal
against the up and coming (and now equal) US team.

In todays game, Reddon looked terrible. She couldn't be faulted for all the
goals...but definitely 4 were her responsibility. She is a drop and flop
goalie like Manon...they're great at making the first save...but give up lots
of rebounds....Canada's defense (suspect for some time) had a hard time
clearing out the US players...give them a 2nd shot and with the goalie
down...a high shot gets a goal almost every time.

Maybe they're choice of goalies needs to be reviewed once again! I
know...you're sick of this contraversy...but you know..no one has talked about
this.....Angela yes....because she has a high profile...but not much has been
said about the cutting of Danielle Dube (my niece..and damn proud of her!).

I can't go into all the details..and won't until after the Olympics...but
Danielle gave 3 years of her life to the Canadian Olympic program. She was
ranked the # 2 female goalie in the world last year...and had back stopped
Canada to a # of solid victories against top teams (the US included).

Like Angela, she ran into a conflict with the coaches..and that was the end of
her Olympic aspirations. An interesting note.....Danielle was the last goalie
cut from the team in late November after she broke her collar bone in a game
against the US. (no mention was ever made of this fact!!)

She recovered quickly and by early January was playing in a # of local mens
tournaments and playing exceptionally well. But we noted this week that the
team took Sami Jo Small to the Olympics as "technical personnel"...she's there
as the 3rd goalie. All the press coming out of the team has Sami ranked as
Canada's #3 goalie. What happened to Danielle??? She was never even approached
to go as a spare!! And neither was Angela James.....although the team took
spare players along to Nagano. Both Angela and Danielle would have contributed
!!

Sami Jo Small was cut from the team almost 5 weeks earlier than Danielle...she
had given all of 7 weeks to the Olympic program...where Danielle has given 3
years of her life and had turned down pro opportunities. That almost typifies
what's wrong with the Canadian program to this point.

I'm sure I'll get lots of flack for this note...you are all entitled to your
opinions. And I'd love to hear them...either on this board..or via private
email. I also know that Danielle has lots of support in the sporting
community.

Anyways..thanks for listening...... This is a super open forum, keep up the
great work and support of Women's hockey!
