Hi, everyone,

I need some advice. I am just learning to ice skate, and am having trouble
with my feet... My arches cramp up really badly after about 15 minutes of
skating.

I do have pretty high arches, and my friend suggested arch supports, which
have helped a bit, but once my feet cramp up, that's it for me. Very
frustrating, especially since I need all the practice I can get!

Is this something that will go away in time? Is there anything I can do
(excercises, etc) to help right away???

Please feel free to reply directly to me.

Thanks for any help you can give!

The point I was trying to make was that if no more than 5-7% of the
subscribers to this list are from Ontario, the only area where a concentration
of national team players play, you're dead wrong.

That aside, back to the games ...

Amen. Those rock 'n roll highlights are TERRIBLE. Seems like all we see is
those and the up-close stories. If it's too snowy on the slopes to show the
scheduled events, they should fill up the air w/ some other SPORT.
Commercials are even better than those ridiculous highlights.

As a curler and hockey player I think the IBM commercials are neat -- the
curling one and the Japanese women's hockey team one, and the Granato family
one in particular. That's about the only way we'll get to see those sports on
prime time TV in this olympics!

Jenna-

I jsut started skating last May, and went through the same thing. Here's a
few things to think about:

1) are the skates new? If they are new, they will take a while to break in.
If you got them used, they are not broken in to your feet. I would suggest
getting a new pair of skates, and breaking them in around YOUR feet. In the
long run, you will be much betetr off. And FORGET about rental skates!!!!

2) Bring them back to the shop. Have a pro make sure they fit you correctly.
Wear as THIN a sock as you can get. Some people wear no socks. My personal
opinion on this is that it is totally disgusting.

3) Try putting new insoles in the skates. I got the CCM Tacks 752's. The
insoles were hard as rocks. I bought a pair of Spenco insoles, and put those
in the skates instead. Some people may disagree with making the bottoms
softer, becuase it gives you a bit less control, but I am not on the Olympic
team, so I would rather be comfortable.

4) Don't make the bottom laces so tight. These can be a bit looser. The most
important part is the top. I even bought Velcro straps (similar to closures
on ski boots) to go around the upper parts of my skates. This way, I have
full control over how tight the tops of my skates are. (And I don;t have to
worry about the laces loosening up.)

5) When you feel the cramps starting, either take a knee for a minute, or head
to the bench. Loosen up the skates for a few minutes. Then tie 'em back up,
and get out there!!

6) For some strange reason, I noticed this problem more when public skating
than when palying hockey. I guess when public skating, I had more time to
think about it. When playing hockey, (practice or games) I have no time to
think about my feet hurting. I have to think about what the coach is saying,
concentrate on the drill we are doing, or worry about putting the puck in the
net.

Hope this helps.

I'm sure there might be more than one WPHL, but there is certainly one
that I have heard about -- But it's a men's league, The Western
Professional Hockey League. They're a minor league, underneath the IHL
here in the U.S. The league has a web page at http://www.wphlhockey.com/
if you want to know more about it...

The only reason I know anything about it is that the WPHL claims the only
professional sports team in Austin, Texas (where I live), The Austin Ice
Bats. I have a fondness for the Bats because going to see one of their
games last year was the original spark for my desire to play hockey!

So far the bet CBS hockey action has been the
Nike, AT&T, and Visa commercials.

CBS should perform a mercy killing and
do away with the late night segment after
the Letterman show. Who picks the music
for the rock-and-roll highlights, someone
that is musically challenged.

Re: HartWomyn's last comment:

The Shannon Miller controversy began months ago, not with your comment, and
will likely continue for some time after the final game of the tournament
(especially if Canada doesn't win the gold). This is the sort of thing that
will *never* be settled unless and until all the participants write their
memoirs, or a sports historian writes an objective account of the matter in
twenty years or so.

It's also ironic that someone who seemingly objects to criticism suddenly
wants everyone to drop a subject she herself brought up (and which hasn't
appeared for the last few days - it all seems to be swinging back to the
proposed pro league in New England). And what, pray tell, does the age of the
poster have do with anything?

Subject: Re: Minnesota High School

There are 83 sanctioned high school girls teams in Minnesota this season. In addition, we will probably add another 5-10 teams next season. There are also around 30-40 junior varsity programs at these high schools. Minnesota will register 5,000 female hockey players this season with USA Hockey/Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association. These numbers do not include the approximately 120-130 high school teams. There are four varsity collegiate programs in Minnesota this year, University of Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Benedicts College and Augsburg College. Hopefully, four more colleges will go varsity in 1998. Several others are expected to go varsity in 1999. If Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado, Ohio, Illinois and several others states decide to go varsity, we should have 40 teams by the year 2000 in order to have an NCAA Women's Collegiate Tournament. YEAH!! Keep up the good work on promoting the girls programs. Also, GO USA, it is great to learn that the USA and Canada have succeeded in making it to the Gold Medal Game. It will be telecast at 7:00 a.m. by CBS in the United States on Tuesday, February 17, on tape delay.

Good analysis, except for the fact that the ratings for the Olympics
apparently aren't that great. I don't have the information with me right
now, but I read an article in the local paper today about the relatively
low ratings. In the Mercury News today, two different columnits (one
sports, one not) also complained about the coverage.

Frankly, I don't think the problem is the masses. It's the network
making assumptions about what people want. I think people are more
interested in watching complete coverage of an event, rather than a ton
of filler.

On Saturday night in Arizona, we were able to flip between a Saturday
Night Live skit about two annoyingly perky TV hosts and the CBS Olympic
late night show with two hosts exchanging annoying banter rather than
covering events. It was hard to tell which was the bigger joke.

One is the coca cola on that says canucks

the other one is with the two little girls, one
pretending to be wickenheiser(?spelling?)

All I have to say is these two American-Canadian
games are gonna be great

Subject: Varsity teams, hs & college

TimesIn response:

	   I know it's a paradox,but it's working for the hs & colleges in
MN. When admission is charged, & there's effort put into marketing AND
games are scheduled in the same kinds of primetime for boys hs & men's
collegiate hockey games, then folks will attend them to see good/great
hockey played!

I think the prices for U of MN games are $8/adults & $4/thru hs kids,
with special promotions sometimes. The pd attendance count for the
first ever women's varsity hockey game at the U of MN was 6,854!!.
That's PAID attendance. Having a real & a percieved value helps create
interest, attract media coverage, generate sponsors, & increase fan
loyalty . The U has bought in $70,000+ in ticket sales thru Jan, '98.
That's revenue brought in, not necessarily profit made. But it's not a
loss either. Of course there has to be a good product, especially in a
state where there are literally 100's of hockey games to choose from
every wk.

This yr there are 83 hs teams with half of those having jv programs. I
think tickets at hs level are $4/adult & $2-3/students. Girls youth
hockey teams have been nearly doubling for the last several yrs, in
spite of some folks opposition, and with many folks strong support.
Nearly ALL colleges in MN will have varsity programs by 2000. Some
started teams without ever having a club team first.

ANY hs or college (public, private, parochial) that has a varsity
boys/men's program can have a varsity girls/women's team by 2000. In
some cases,by next yr. No ice & no money nowithstanding! When has
there ever been enuf of those??

I'm serious. It can be done with demonstrated interest by girls &
young women, along with effort, education, positve advocacy,
commitment & followthru. That's how it happened in MN. Whatever the
costs & amts of ice that males now have in a school's program can /must
be divided in half, IF there is demonstrated interest by females & a
need for the school to get into compliance with Title IX. Most
schools, hs & colleges, are not now in compliance. Any school that:
1.accepts federal funds (&they ALL do), 2.& has a male hockey team, 3.&
no comparable contact sport for females, 4.& females show a
demonstrated interest for a contact sport (hockey), 5.MUST provide that
sport in order to be in compliance. BINGO!

The first step would be: Tomorrow go to yr AD with a ltr asking for a
girls/women's varsity ice hockey team for next season. Request a
written response within the next 2 wks. Go from there. I have yet to
hear of a valid reason why a varsity women's ice hockey team cannot be
provided. I have heard plenty of excuses, but NO VALID REASON.

I know. I helped write the Gender Equity in Athletics manual for the
MN Dept of Education & the MN State High School League. On a state
wide survey in 1992 over 8,000 girls indicated they would play ice
hockey for their high school if it were available to them. Boys had
been playing in a sanctioned state tournament for 50 yrs when girls had
their first hs state tournament in '94.

It's not that girls didn't want to play hockey. They did in droves.
They just weren't allowed to play. "No ice." "Too dangerous." "No
money." "No interest." Yada, yada, yada. That's why there are now
nearly 100 schools with varsity teams (some hs have paired for the
first couple of yrs) & a three day state tournament at the end of Feb
each yr. And the state hs assoc makes money, not looses it on the
girls tournament, as well as makes BIG money on the boys state
tournament. This can happen in YOUR STATE,too. It will be carried live
on TV for the first time in '98.

About # of collegiate varsity teams. NCAA requires 40 to put on a
national tournament.. I think the count is now 32 US varsity
collegiate teams. That's not counting any club teams. By the
millenium there will be 40 for sure.

Who knows more about the national tournament at the Fleet Center in
Boston March 20 & 21, played before the Hockey East Championship game?
That's a great start! It's also where the Patty Kasmeier(sp?) award
will first be given. It is comparable to the men's Hobey Baker. Plan
now to be there!

By the way, Brown won the BeanPot that one yr they played in it. Was
it '94?

therefore staying home form work, writing a lot of emails, and wacthing the
olympics on TNT.

Their coverage, while leaving a bit to be desired, is a LOT better than CBS.
They had a pretty good piece on Cammit Granato, and shwoed quite a bit,
althouguh not enough of the women;s ice hockey.

TNTcoverage is from 12 noon - 6 pm EST.

I have the same problem with my roller hockey skates. Last season we had a
clinic before the season started, so they could evaluate the players to make
equal teams. Near the end of the hour long clinic my feet hurt pretty bad, I
had that problem most of the season. Part of it is because my skates are
probably 2 sizes to big, so I've always had a problem getting them tight
around the ankles. Near the end of the season my feet were finally used to
them. With the roller season starting in 2 months I'll probably have problems
again, since I don't have the chance to go out and skate whenever I want to,
since I live in the boonies. I've tried various ways to solve this but none
have worked yet. I usually wore 3 pairs of socks, the time I forgot the extra
pair, my feet hurt worse than normal.
So I guess I have a couple questions myself. Whats a good way to break in
skates? I've read that wearing wet socks in them will help. Does anybody know
if that works? Oh yea, I dunno if this would help any but I have the Bauer
H3's.
