I started playing hockey this season with Team Michigan and I live in the
Metro Detroit area. I got all of my equipment at Play It Again Sports...
They sell lots of used and new equipment at pretty good prices. I think I
got all my equipment for about $300 (except skates, which I bought new).
All of my equipment I bought used, but it looks like it has never been
worn!!

There is a store at 15 mile rd and Schoenner, and there is also one at 23
mile and Gratiot (where I got my stuff). There are a few more but I don't
know their exact locations. You might also want to try Peranis ("The store
for hockey players") which is at 14 mile and Van Dyke, but they only sell
new equipment...lots of it!!!

Where are you playing? I'm playing out of Fraser, and everyone on my team is
new to ice hockey... We would love to play a scrimmage with your team, if
you have one. And if you're not on a team e-mail me at
email@hidden, we might be able to use you on our team. Our team is
going to be 20 and over next year so we are going to lose about 4 or 5 of
our players (that sucks!!)... We need some people to fill those slots!!

PS I'm also thinking about buying some goalie equipment, so if anyone knows
anyone selling some...feel free to e-mail me. I've already bought some
goalie pads and need skates, chest protector, glove, and blocker...

Amen, Jill!

Jill speaks the truth. As a hockey traditionalist, I was bitter about
Nike's penetration into the market. All of my equipment is Louisville and I
love it. HOWEVER, the tide of change is coming. Best jump on.

Nike not only supports the USA Women's team, it also supports the Canadian
Women's team (through Bauer). They are involved in a lot of youth
organizations to introduce the kids to the game. Jill's story illustrates
their commitment to the 'average' (no offense, Jill) player.

Before you start spouting anti-trust laws, you should realize that in the
corporate and media driven society we live in today, nothing gets done by a
medium- or small-sized corporation. Look at Microsoft. Where has Word
Perfect gone? (the only thing Bill Gates did is make a lot of money from
his invention and people hate him?) The truth of the matter is, it takes
money to really deliver a good product globally. Nike has been promoting
female athletes for as long as I could remember. Good for them.

Several months ago, I was discussing the rumors of a professional women's
league with another female player. I told her that I hoped Nike would
sponsor them. She growled and spat and said something unrepeatable about
Nike. Um... Excuse me?... Do you think the Women's NBA would be as
successful if Adidas had sponsored them? Um... no. Nike dumped a lot of
money into that league to get publicity for it and I hope it does the same
for the hockey league. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. If women's
hockey is going to be successful, it's going to need a BIG-NAME sponsor with
deep pockets that can suffer through a couple of dry years. Nike can absorb
a few blows.

My next pair of skates just might be Nike. Gretzky is skating in Nikes and
he's not even being paid to. Think about it.

Sorry to bother the whole list, but my hard drive crashed a few weeks
     ago, with all my addresses.

There is a woman on this list in Pittsburgh (Chatham College?), who
was trying to get a woman's team together, and to whom I gave a phone
number of a former team mate.

Could that person please respond to me? I'm trying to get in touch
     with Rita!

First, Nike has *NOT* been a long time sponsor of women's sports. That honor
goes to Reebok, which was supporting women's sports from the early 80's on.
Nike's running shoes weren't even sized to women's feet until about ten years
ago! Nike also completely missed the aerobics boom, and only became seriously
involved with female athletes when their executives realized that women simply
weren't buying their overpriced, overhyped, uncomfortable shoes in favor of
Reebok's, which were half the price and designed to a female last.

And when it comes to a women's pro league, the American Basketball League is
doing quite well without a dime of Nike money. Their major sponsor from the
get-go was Reebok. Nike is sponsoring the WNBA (which itself was rushed into
existence because Dave Stern couldn't tolerate the thought of someone other
than the NBA making money from basketball) because they sponsor the parent
NBA, not because of any great desire to help women's sports. A women's league
will need a major manufacturer behind it, yes, but it does *not* necessarily
have to be Nike.

As for Nike taking over hockey equipment - again, this is *very* recent. Nike
concentrated on track and field and basketball until the last few years. I
believe their first major hockey clients were Sergei Federov and Cam Neely
about three or four years ago. Nike is still learning to make hockey
equipment, and I've seen very few swooshes on skates (or anything else) except
for the few NHLers who've signed endorsement contracts. Certainly there
hasn't been a Nike takeover in the minors.

Finally, Nike's labor practices, particularly their exploitation of female
workers, are appalling, and well documented. Why would a new women's league
have to accept sponsorship from a company that pays Asian women and children
less per day than the cost of fast food sandwich? There are less exploitative
equipment manufacturers and I see no reason why a possible women's hockey
league couldn't go with a sponsor that doesn't have a poor track record on
women's issues.

Just because Nike is popular, and has a huge advertising budget, and is
sponsoring women and hockey players *now*, doesn't mean that they would be a
good fit for a women's pro league. I still think a viable women's league is
at least ten years away, but whether any of the proposals being floated right
now make it or not, there is no reason why a women's hockey league has to
settle for Nike besides sheer laziness on the part of the organizers. A
little research and marketing would dig up a better sponsor than Nike!

Has anyone seen or used this skate sharpening device called the Blade
Doctor? I recently saw it in a sporting goods store in New York State and
am wondering how effective it is. It comes with a blade sharpener, a file,
and some kind of gel to put on the blade before sharpening. Any comments
will be helpful. I am looking for a way to sharpen my own skates.

Thanks,
Diane

I'm glad you brought that point up. I have been a Nike Boycotter since I
learned of their practices, a little over a year ago. There is a great web
site for information on this. I have also sent email to the NHLPA, requesting
players such as Sergei Fedorov, Jeremy Roenick, and Brian Leetch to stop
accepting sponsorship money from Nike. It's hard to be sympathetic to players
in a union who have to arbitrate for their fair share of the pie, to turn
around and endorse a company with labor practices such as Nike.

I know the coverage of the women's Olypic hockey is going to spotty at best
in the US, a little better in Canada. Canada will get to see more games
than we will in the US. Many will be on tape delay.

So my request is that we keep the postings that end up being spoilers
to a minimum, especially on games that are televised in either the
US or Canada.

I guess you should feel free to post commentary or reactions, but make them
such that, if we're just checking mail, the result doesn't scream at us.

I have to check my mail frequently. Seeing a subject line of

	Canada 23, Japan 0

in the middle of my other e-mail is definitely a spoiler. If I read your
whole message, and it includes the result, then I've spoiled it myself.
If the result is in the subject, or in the first line of the message (which
my mailer displays along with the Subject), then you've spoiled it for me.

Just a request. Flame me if you will. But if this goes how I expect it
will, I'll have to unsubscribe.

Diane,

I use one called the "Profiler", it's about $30 and it is terrific. I'm one
of those skaters that must absolutely have sharp edges at all times and I used
to have to get my skates done about every 3 hours of ice time, which for me
was about every other day. Now, I am getting 10 times the wear from a single
sharpening, probably more. I keep mine on the bench cause it's great for
those times when you have a puck hit your edge hard and sort of nick it and
you can take the file and just go over it a couple of times and your as good
as new. I would highly recommend it.
