I thought it was a joke at first when I read that Shannon Miller had
forbidden the players from partying or drinking alcohol during Christmas
after the loss to the US in the 3 Nations Cup. I couldn't believe she
was serious. (Yes, I understand she relented but it's the first action
that will stay in the player's minds.) Now she doesn't allow them to
talk to the media after the tie with Sweden.

These women are all adults, some with their own businesses and she's
treating them like children. What a Control Freak. I can imagine the
conversations in the dressing room after she leaves. She's gonna kill
that team faster than you can say Mike Keenan........

Same type of article in FtWorth written by Gil LeBreton, in the Olympic
Profiles section, all about Erin Whitten. Says her mom, Joan, will be there
Saturday morning to watch Erin lead the US team in the parade. Of course,
she did play for the Dallas Freeze a few games, so there's local interest.
Yeah Right.

Control freak? Miller? For all the world to see now. It's been happening for a while. The Christmas fit was just one in a long line of bad judgement calls. It goes farther back than that. I recently read the McLean's article where she said "I like to remain calm in tense situations." Yeah right. The Captain of the Titanic used bad judgement to ignore the first 5 warnings of icebergs ahead. We all know how that ended up. It's hard to erase one bad judgement call if you keep making them over and over. Everyone is human and expected to make mistakes. Some just make less than others. I don't feel these players have confidence in her at all. But we aren't supposed to talk about that. We are just supposed to cheer them on regardless of what happens along the way. So, on that note, Go Canada!

A lot of these things are prepared before time, and you can't really
control for the hazzards of life. My kids get SIKids and Nickelodeon
Magazines, and they had a lot of rah rah going for people who are staying
States side for the games, or not going in first place (like Tara Lipinsky)
Have pity, the dollar store was out of crystal ball when the deadline
rolled around.

Jake,

Actually, you've supported my point somewhat. The players lose to the
US in the 3 Nations Cup (when their current year record is 7-6) and she
cancels Christmas. How much fun can they have? Detroit's Scotty Bowman
keeps the Wings loose and they enjoy what they're doing. (Mike Keenan
now coaches the Canucks since mid season. He's alienated most of that
team already after shredding the players in public).

Canada ties and, in the prelude to the biggest tournament of their
lives, the players aren't allowed out of their dressing room to get some
quotes into the papers back home. How can they be enjoying that?

. Bill,
. I am not a Mike Keenan fan but on Tuesday Detroit played the Florida
. Panthers and I have never seen a warm-up like theirs. It was
disciplined,
. no half-hearted efforts. They really pushed in the drills, some
drills I
. had never seen before. It was a true delight to watch these guys.
The
. best part was how much fun they appeared to be having! They looked
like a
. bunch of kids taking pride in their achievements and smiling all the
while.
. If this is what a control freak can get from the team I say go for
it.
. Our Panthers have been having serious problems cause they don't seem
to
. have any "heart" like they used to. The Red Wings have that heart and
. enjoy playing together. Maybe Miller has a plan.
.
. Just my 2 cents worth.

just one question, why is the rose thing agaisnt the rule? does that mean that
the little patch on the USA jersey (I don't remember what it was for) isn't
allowed either?

Update, I just received an Oops Apology note from the Gil LeBreton. Seems
that article was written weeks ago, when Gil was told that Erin WAS going
to be on team. No one ever told the local editors where to find a roster,
and everything they could find was about the Canadian team.

Guess I could add "web surfer to the editors" to my list of hockey duties.

Even if Erin Whitten *were* at the Games, she certainly wouldn't be the
American flagbearer. Only athletes with significant previous Olympic
experience are nominated for that honor. This year's flagbearer is
speedskater Eric Flaim.

little nugget:

<<
Go Team Canada! I personally hate the idea of Nike taking over our sport
and DRIVING UP the prices of everything! Those ridiculous looking skates
with thier ridiculous price tags are a joke! I avoid anything with the
swoosh like the plague! Go Team Canada!

Well, I (as well as my team) happen to think that Nike is a pretty OK company.

They are doing quite a bit to promote women's ice hockey. They partially
sponsored our team. Wihtout going into too much detail - they shot a video of
us that is showing in Niketown, NYC. In return for this, they gave us some
Nike hockey equipment and a few ice slots. We promote the sport that we love,
get a few goodies, and we get to tell our friends that we are in this really
cool video. Pretty good deal as far as I'm concerned.

This video is also being shown at the Nike hospitality suite in Nagano.

They also sponsored the USA Women's Ice Hockey Team.

Less than 1 year ago, I didn;t even have a clue that women played ice hockey.
I am 32 years old, learned to skate & started playing last June. I am
totally addicted to the game. But I know, I will never have any chance of
doing anything more than playing on a recreational team (I like to think it's
mostly due to my late start at the game.)

I got into hockey by dumb luck. Was watching an NHL game with my sister one
night, adn I said "geeeeez. Tha looks like sooooooooo much fun!!"

She said "Why don;t you play?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Hockey. Women;s Ice hockey. I have a freind from work who plays. Why don;t
you give her a call so you can find out about playing?"

"WOMEN play ice hockey?" I said with an astonished look on my face.

"Yes. Women play ice hockey."
"but - I'm gonna get killed."
"They play no-checking. You'll be fine."

So I called her friend the next day. and the rest is a story for another time.
Point being - that if I had known that girls' and women actually played ice
hockey, I guarantee that I would have started playing much earlier.

I hope that every girl who ever dreams of playing ice hockey realizes that it
is real. That they can do it!! Nike is taking an active role in promoting the
game. If recognizing the Nike Swoosh is what it takes to promote the sport,
why not??

Maybe some day there will be a professional league. But wihtout the money
form large corporations (such as Nike) that can never be a reality.

btw..... If you have shopped for skates lately, the price of the Nike skates
are right on par with those of CCM's.

The mere fact that we all discussing the "coach" instead of the efforts and accomplishments of the players is exactly what is wrong with this team. Miller has too much focus on herself instead of where it should be, on the players. She has been hired as the coach. So far I haven't seen her do a very good job either. If she isn't happy with the way the players are doing their job on the ice she need only look in the mirror to find out why. If the documentary "The Game of Her Life" didn't open your eyes about Miller then hopefully this latest faux pas will. This is supposed to be about the players not the coach. I guess coaching intermediate recreational teams doesn't quite compare with coaching a national team. If we were in a local community arena in Calgary no one would care. But this is the big time. So she was mad at them for only tying the Swedes? Okay. Deal with it like a professional. Inside the dressing room and not in the press. Let the players come out and show they a!
re taking responsibility for their actions and aren't afraid to talk about it. What does she do? Sends out the shyest player on the team to try and explain what is wrong with their game. Isn't it the coaching staff's responsibility as well? Aren't they supposed to protect the players and look after them? Not just shove them out of the room and thrown to the wolves on their own. Why didn't she come out and defend her players? Isn't that what coaches are supposed to do? I'm sure the players felt really united about that. The players are handling all this just fine. It's the coach who is having trouble. I feel sorry for those players, to be represented this way. How embarassing. I just can't understand why someone (CHA?) doesn't get a hold of this woman and straighten her out. Do you think the men's team would lend us Bob Gainey?
