No problem, Cindy. You make the arguments supporting your
viewpoint, I've made mine. Myself, I'd be damned proud to have my
accomplishments compared to that of Mark Messier, what with being fifth all-
time in the NHL for points scored, owning more Cup rings than any player of
the post-expansion era, and a certain first-ballot Hall Of Famer. That aside,
I have no contacts with any players on the Canadian team, as few of us do, nor
the means to compel them to speak to me in a fashion other than that they've
chosen to the media.

I recently came across a great new web site dedicated to women's ice hockey.

It is called Women's Hockey World : http://home.onestop.net/zmh

WHW provides merchandise specific to the sport. Right now it has some cool
t-shirts for sale (one even for the Olympics!) and books too.

I bought one of the T-Shirts and they are really nice! A great way to show
pride in our sport! If anyone has any questions about the shirt I bought
please email me! (I got the blue one that says WH Women's Hockey and I
LOVE IT!)

Anyway, I just thought some of you may be interested. Check it out!

The Canadians won the game 4-2, with the last goal an empty-netter. The
first goal by Canada at :51 of the 1st was horrible for DeCosta! No
screen, no deflection, no nothing-just a clean shot from about 25 feet
out. Anyways, after that, I think Shelly Looney scored one, then Canada's
Botterill put in a beautiful rebound that lay at DeCosta's feet for what
seemed like an eternity, and then I don't remember exactly who scored, as
this was my first time seeing both teams play in person and I was a bit
caught up with the moment. It did seem as though the US was tired,
though, as the Canadians really head-manned the puck a few times. The US
also used the same play as when they scored first, over and over again,
but the Canadians are no dummies and they caught on pretty fast.
Overall, it sure seemed like Canada was the better team. National pride
on the line, I hope the US finally pulls this one off, but as for a female
hockey player, good luck to all teams, especially Canada and the USA!!

Speaking both as a hockey coach and experience as a member of a minor
hockey association....

Quite often personal feelings go into player selection. The excuse
"attitude problem" is a common reason to leave talented players off of
high caliber teams. It's often a personality conflict between coach and
player. Coach wins every time in amatuer hockey. I've seen kids left
off teams because no one can stand their parents.....lots of personal
issues involved.

During player selection and evaluation, the best 2 or 3 players and the
worst 2 or 3 players are clearly evident. After that, there's often not
a lot of difference between any 2 players. So the coach picks the ones
they like, the easiest to get along with or personal friends or friend's
kids. No "VP of Hockey Operations" is going to overrule the coach
unless hell freezes over because it's direct evidence that they have no
faith in their coach's ability to select players and do their job. When
an NHL GM over rules the coach on player selection, how much longer is
the coach behind the bench?

Think about it for a sec......

Trading John LeClair......Patrick Roy.......Brett Hull from
Calgary.......Shanahan and Curtis Joseph from St Louis....Cutting
Messier from the National Team.......Bill Guerin and Valeri Zelepukin
for Jason Arnott?????? Lou didn't like Guerin so away he goes.

Lots of hockey decisions get rationalized. (Not even to think about
US politics lately...)

Hi,
Just curious. Over the weekend I saw the Olympic hockey jerseys on display
at the Miami Arena. Every country's jersey had the Nike swoosh over the
left chest - except Canada. There was a symbol there but I was not
familiar with the logo. Was this deliberate on the part of the Canadian
teams or is it just a matter of someone else got there first?

I agree with you completely. Maybe Dave Baker will finally relent? We are not stupid people, we know what goes on behind the scenes. It is very evident in the James case. And maybe farther back with this same coach and Margot Page. It's odd that both of these players who played such a major role in Canada's dominance of women's hockey have both departed under this coach. Having watched these players for many years internationally and on their AAA club teams I know that has to be the reason. As Mr. Spock would say it is only logical. Too bad that can happen on an international, once every four years squad.

Can anyone tell me about the University of Michigan
womens club hockey team? How would they be compared
to OSU, or BGSU? My team, a midget team, will be
scrimmaging them in Sylvania Ohio on February 18th.

BRAVO to the Concord Monitor for devoting a wonderfully large section
of its website to the US Women's Hockey Team and to Sandy Smith for giving us
its website address. I really enjoyed the pictures and bios....although
I found myself saying "if only I'd been raised in New England and
started playing at age 4...." Oh well.
What a great time it is right now for women's hockey! Even the sports
radio station here in Southern California, XTRA Sports 690, had an announcement
during their hourly sports update today (tuesday) at noon about the pro women's
hockey team sites. It didn't name them - it only said the final considerations
were in Canada and New England. Let's only hope that CBS can bring
us some of what we want to see during the Olympics!

OK I'm extreamly new to playing hockey. I can skate, just barely, but i have
no equipment of my own. I have to barrow a pair of my friends old figure
skates. My mother was looking around at used skates, around here there $40 -
$50.
TO get to my point about pads and helmets what should i expect to see as price
range?
Lessons too? I really have to learn how to skate better. Im in the Metro
Detroit area, if that helps.

Jess,

If you are in the Metro Detroit area, you are very lucky- there are at least
3 teams that I think operate in the area- Team Michigan, the Polar Bears,
and the Lady Blues (I don't know what kind of cuts they have or how they
deal with novices).

Can I just say PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't wear figure skates to play hockey-
this is not good. It's very dangerous- have you seen The Cutting Edge?
They ain't jokin' about that toepick. Plus, all that stuff that sticks out
the back of those skates can easily catch on things--equipment, sticks,
other people's body parts, etc. Trust me, not a good plan. Besides, hockey
skates are way easier.

As for equipment costs, you should have a larger used equipment pool than we
do here- I would imagine Detroit has a few more hockey players than
east-central Illinois. I paid about $300 for my first set of equipment:
new gloves, shoulder pads, skates, shinguards, elbow pads, used pants and
helmet. Oh, yeah, I also had the CCM Mustangs- a good skate to start in,
and they were only $90, plus I got a trade in discount.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Good Luck!

hey,

well, equipment cost me about $500 dollars to start, purchasing new.
in terms of lessons. yost ice arena at the university of michigan has
lessons that run two times a week for, i believe, five or six weeks at $98
(but you have to be 18). otherwise, great lakes sports city in fraser has a
lot of various programs. i started out on team michigan's novice women's
team out of fraser. if they still have the team, i highly recommend looking
into it.

with thier ridiculous price tags are a joke! I avoid anything with the
swoosh like the plague! Go Team Canada!
