NATIONAL UNDER-22 WOMEN’S TEAM OFF TO SWITZERLAND, GERMANY
FOR SIX-GAME TOUR, INCLUDING CHRISTMAS CUP

CALGARY, AB -- Olympic silver medalists Jennifer Botterill and Hayley
Wickenheiser will lead
   Canada’s National Under-22 Women’s Hockey Team on its first-ever
international tour, which
includes the tri-nation Christmas Cup tournament in Unna, Germany against
Switzerland and the
host German team, the Canadian Hockey Association announced on Wednesday.

The Under-22 team, coached by Melody Davidson, along with assistants
Julie Healy and Wally
Kozak, will play a pair of exhibition games in Zuchwil, Switzerland, not
far from Berne, on Dec.
19 and 20 before travelling to Germany for the Christmas Cup, which runs
from Dec. 26-30.

The team - two goaltenders, eight defenders and 11 forwards - includes
players from eight
provinces, reflecting the growing depth in the female game across the
country. Six of the players
come from Saskatchewan, three from Ontario and three apiece from Quebec
and Manitoba.
New Brunswick and British Columbia each are sending two players to the
Under-22 team, while
Nova Scotia and Alberta are supplying one player each.

Botterill and Wickenheiser and three other players -- Dana Antal, Carol
Scheibel and Tammy
Lee Shewchuk -- all were among the 28 players invited to try out for
Canada’s 1998 Women’s
   Olympic team in September 1997.

"The National Under-22 Women’s Team provides developmental continuity for
our
high-performance female program," said Davidson. "In the past, there has
been the provincial
Under-18 female teams that participated in the Canada Winter Games, but
there was no
developmental link between those teams and the National Women’s Team.

"This team will enable the players to continue to develop, and permit the
CHA to deepen the
talent pool for the National and Olympic Women’s Teams. And since the
Christmas Cup will be
the first-ever international tournament for many of our players, this
experience will be immensely
useful for them in their hockey careers."

Gaetan Robitaille, General Manager of Women’s High Performance Teams for
the CHA, noted
that some members of the Under-22 team may be invited to play for
Canada’s National
Women’s team during a four-game Canadian tour in January, which will be
the final stage of
preparation for the club before the 1999 Women’s World Hockey
Championship in Espoo,
   Finland from March 8-14.

"The players on this team are part of our talent pool for the National
Women’s Team," said
Robitaille. "Our objective is to help these players develop into
top-calibre international players
who will compete hard for spots on future World Championship and Olympic
teams.

"In that context, then, we hope that this first tour is the beginning of
a longer journey for most of
   these athletes."

Does anyone have a (or where to find one) complete list of players/ages/
provinces/team names?

Also, what is the bottom cutoff or is there one for the U22 team?

Can anyone tell me where in Germany they will be playing? There is a remote
chance that I will be there during that time frame.

Marc:

I think the Canadian hockey webpage (www.canadianhockey.ca) has a list,
somewhere under news releases.

This morning's paper says 2-0 Canada. No details.

This is the mission statement in USA Hockey's Methods of Effective
Coaching manual. Hopefully it will shed some light on this situation:

"The USA Hockey Coaching Education Program is committed to developing
coaches who will be effective instructors and role models through a
comprehensive education program at all levels. The Coaching Education
Program shall emphasize the teaching of fundamental skills, conceptual
development, sportsmanship, and respect for the dignity of the
individual athlete."

Let me repeat the last part:
"...and respect for the dignity of the individual athlete."

Regardless of how any of us feel about the coach calling his player a
"pussy", his actions clearly disrespect the athlete and take away from
the dignity of this individual. We need to learn what motivates the
individual players. Kids today will not tolerate being disrespected
(*dissed*) by their peers or superiors (coaches, parents, teachers).
Motivation most often comes from positive reinforcement.
