1998 U.S. Women's Select Team Falls To Canada, 4-3, In Sudden Death Shootout
At Three Nations Cup

KUORTANE, Finland (December 14, 1998) - The 1998 U.S. Women's Select Team
fell to Canada, 4-3, in a sudden death shootout in the third game for both
teams at the 1998 Three Nations Cup here Monday evening. The tournament,
which features the three medalists from the XVIII Olympic Winter Games - the
United States, Canada and Finland - is the first international women's ice
hockey competition since the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
Team USA forward Karyn Bye (River Falls, Wis.) got the U.S. on the board
early as she notched her second goal of the tournament at 5:33 of the first
period. Forwards Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn.) and Tricia Dunn (Derry,
N.H.) assisted on the play. Shelley Looney (Trenton, Mich.) put the U.S.
ahead, 2-0, at the 16:07 mark of the first, as she received a pass from
defenseman Sue Merz (Greenwich, Conn.) and rifled a low slapshot past
Canadian goaltender Kim St. Pierre.

Canada then responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. With
1:56 remaining in the first period forward Jayna Hefford slipped the puck
past U.S. netminder Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) to pull Canada to within a
goal. Canada's Mairlan Le tied the game, 2-2, at the 10:04 mark of the
second stanza, and forward Cheryl Pounder notched an unassisted power-play
goal at 4:32 of the third period to pull Canada ahead, 3-2.

Merz then converted on a power-play opportunity at 10:13 of the third, with
assists from Bye and Cammi Granato (Downers Grove, Ill.), to tie the score
at 3-3, which held until the end of regulation.

Neither team scored in the 10-minute, sudden-death overtime period. In the
subsequent shootout round, two shooters from each team tallied, leading to a
sudden death shootout to decide the game. Canada's Amanda Benoit then beat
DeCosta to seal the victory for Canada.

"Even though we can up short, we played a strong game tonight," said U.S.
Head Coach Julie Sasner (Madison, Wis.). "Our team has improved in every
game of this tournament, and we continued to improve tonight. Sue Merz and
Jenny Schmidgall both played very well. We'll now set our sights on earning
a victory in our game against Finland tomorrow."

The U.S., now 1-2-0 in the tournament, will play its final Three Nations Cup
game tomorrow against Finland at 6:30 p.m. local time (11:30 a.m. Eastern
time).

Canadians rally to win Three Nations Cup

KUORTANE, Finland (CP) -- Canada, down two goals in the first period,
rallied to beat the U.S. in a penalty shootout Monday and win the women's
Three Nations Cup.
The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation and a 10-minute overtime.
Goaltender Sami Jo Small of Winnipeg stopped four of six shots in the
shootout, won 3-2 by Canada. Amanda Benoit of Welland, Ont., scored the
winning goal.
Nancy Drolet of Drummondville, Que., and Cassie Campbell of Brampton, Ont.,
also scored for Canada in the shootout.
Canada (3-0) plays Finland (0-2) in the tournament's final game Wednesday
before returning home Thursday. The loss dropped the Americans to 1-2.
The title was Canada's second at the tournament. It was also a measure of
revenge for Canada's loss to the Americans in the gold medal game at the
Nagano Olympics.
"Our character really showed tonight, we never gave up," said Jayna Hefford
of Trenton, Ont., named Canada's player of the game.
Mai-Lan Le and Cheryl Pounder, both of Montreal, and Hefford scored for
Canada in regulation time. Karen Bye, Shelley Looney and Sue Merz replied
for the Americans.
Kim St-Pierre of LaSalle, Que., stopped 13 of 15 shots for Canada in the
first period. Small went the rest of the way, blocking 19 of 20 shots in the
final two periods and overtime.
"Our defence did a good job of clearing the front of the net tonight and
allowed me to see the shots," Small said.
