THIS WEEK--With final examinations underway at Minnesota, the Golden Gophers are
on a 15-day hiatus and will not return to action until Dec. 18.

MINNESOTA RECENTLY--The fourth-ranked Gophers extended their winning streak to
seven games with an 8-1 win over Gustauvs Adolphus, Thursday, at Mariucci Arena.

Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Edina) had a career-high five points, scoring a
pair of goals, while sisters Courtney and Shannon Kennedy (Woburn,
Mass./Buckingham Browne and Nichols) both contibuted three points.

Shannon Kennedy, a junior left wing, opened the scoring at 4:35 of the opening
period, kicking off a five-goal barrage that culminated with Courtney Kennedy
scoring on the power play at 15:48. Schmidgall, along with Tracy Engstrom
(Willmar, Minn./Willmar) and Winny Brodt (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) also
scored in the opening 20 minutes.

Megan Milbert (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) scored her first goal of
the season as Minnesota took a 6-0 lead in the second period. Schmidgall and
Courtney Kennedy scored in the third period, sandwiching goals around Linnea
Carlson's goal for the Gusties at 15:27.

Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla./Union) stopped 10 of 11 shots to record her
fourth consecutive win.

SCORING SPREE--With Thursday's five-point effort, Jenny Schmidgall has already
scored 25 points in just nine games. Her two goals gave her 13 on the season and
she has also chipped in with a dozen assists.

Over her last four games, the 1998 Olympian has six goals and eight assists for
14 points.

SHUTOUT STRING ENDS--First-year goalie Crystal Nicholas won her fourth
consecutive game Thursday but saw her shutout streak come to an end.

After stopping 20 shots without allowing a goal in her first three games,
Nicholas ran her streak of shutout minutes to 235 before Gustavus' Linnea
Carlson scored with 4:33 to play in the game.

With the 8-1 win, Nicholas is now 4-0-0 with an 0.25 goals against average and a
968 save percentage.

LIKE A ROCK--The goaltending of Erica Killewald (Troy, Mich./Troy) and Crystal
Nicholas has been outstanding for the Gophers this season.

As the team's number-one goalie, Killewald has not allowed more than two goals
in six starts this season, boasting a 1.41 goals against average and a .943 save
percentage, including marks of 1.48 and .953 versus ranked opponents this
season.

The duo has combined to allow just 10 goals in 10 games and only Harvard, which
scored an empty-net goal, has scored more than two goals in a game against
Minnesota this season.

BREKKEN LEAVES TEAM--Sophomore center Matty Brekken (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils
Lake) has decided to leave the University of Minnesota at the end of the quarter
and will not return to the team.

Gopher head coach Laura Halldorson stated that Brekken was leaving the team for
personal reasons to be with her family.

Brekken, who did not play in Thursday's win over Gustavus, scored four goals and
11 points in nine games this season. During her two seasons at Minnesota, she
scored 17 goals and registered 37 points in 38 games.

REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY--First-year center Jenny Schmidgall and sophomore
blueliner Winny Brodt will play for Team USA at the Three Nations Cup in
Finland.

The tournament gets underway Thursday as the United States faces Canada in a
rematch of the 1998 Olympic gold medal game. The U.S. will then face Finland
Friday, Canada again Monday and Finland again Tuesday before returning home Dec.
16.

Schmidgall, who played in the 1998 Olympics, and Brodt, a member of the 1996
U.S. Women's Select Team, were chosen from the USA Hockey Women's Festival for
the national team and will be joined by Gopher head coach Laura Halldorson, who
will serve as the teamÍs assistant coach, as part of the USA contingent.

THE COACH--Now in her second season behind the Minnesota bench and ninth season
as a college head coach, Laura Halldorson has established herself as one of the
nationÍs premier coaches in womenÍs hockey, sporting an 88-83-13 overall record
and a 29-8-4 mark at Minnesota.

She began her coaching career at Colby College, where she led the White Mules,
one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record in 1995-96, earning
ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the New England Hockey
Writers' Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also recruited and coached ECAC
Player of the Year Meaghan Sittler.

At the national level, she was the assistant coach for the gold medal-winning
team at the 1998 USA Hockey Women's Festival and will also serve as an assistant
for the U.S. National team that competes in the Three Nations Cup in Finland
Dec. 10-16.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High School,
Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a co-captain and
all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three Ivy League titles.
She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in psychology.

A member of the 1987 U.S. National Women's Team and three national club
championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to her alma
mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an assistant.

IT'S HOME„The home of Gopher Women's Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One of
the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will be
Minnesota's home until the new women's hockey facility, scheduled to open in the
fall of 2000, is completed.

Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting teams, the Gophers
are 14-3-4 in the five-year-old building.

ON THE AIR--A pair of Gopher games will be aired live by Midwest Sports Channel
this season.

The first telecast was MinnesotaÍs clash with Harvard, Nov. 5, in the opening
game of the All-American East-West Challenge.

The second will be part of a doubleheader with the Minnesota men's team on Feb.
20. The women's game gets underway at 2:30 p.m. as the Gophers take on
Providence, to be followed by the men's clash with St. Cloud State at 7:05 p.m.

Veteran broadcaster Frank Mazzocco will handle play-by-play duties while former
Minnesota North Star Tom Reid does the color commentary.

ON THE AIR, PART II--Eight Gopher games will be carried by KKMS-980 AM radio
this season, beginning Nov. 27 with the Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational.

KKMS broadcast the Nov. 27-28 games from Princeton's Hobey Baker Rink and will
carry Minnesota's Jan. 29-30 games from the Towse Center at the University of
New Hampshire Invitational.

Additionally, KKMS will carry four home games: Feb. 5 versus Cornell; Feb. 7
versus Minnesota State, Mankato; Feb. 21 versus Providence; and Feb. 26 versus
Brown.

Tom Witschen will call all of the play-by-play action with former Gopher
volleyball standout Sarah Pearman handling the color commentary.

GONE POLLING--Following its Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational title, Minnesota
moved up one spot to fourth in both the American Hockey Magazine/USA Today and
U.S. College Hockey Online polls last week. New Hampshire held onto the top spot
in both polls.

McGill goalie Kim St. Pierre with Team Canada

McGill rookie sensation Kim St. Pierre is with Canada's National
Women's Hockey Team in Finland. The 19 year old Chateauguay, Quebec
resident left yesterday with the Canadian squad for her first-ever
international competition.
"She's extremely excited about the opportunity," said McGill manager
Dan Madden, who recruited St. Pierre to McGill.
"This is something Kim has worked very hard for. It's like a dream come
true for her," said Madden.
St. Pierre has been a big reason McGill has enjoyed success this season
in the Quebec University Women's Hockey League.
"Kim gives the team the confidence that we can win. Having a goaltender
of her abilities raises our play to another level," said Madden, who is
also pleased with the play of second year goalie Amey Doyle, a native of
Smiths Falls, Ontario.
"Doyle gives us a strong goaltending tandem. She has won some big games
for us and while she helps to push St. Pierre to be the best she can be,
she too is learning a lot from St. Pierre," said Madden.
The Martlets, who sport a 4-3-1 league record at the Christmas Break,
are a much improved team this season. St. Pierre's stellar goaltending
has challenged the best of shooters this season.
"We have a young defence with 4 rookies patrolling the blueline. We
have a tendancy to make youthful mistakes and many times St. Pierre
bails us out. She likes a heavy workload and often gets exactly that
with a lot of rubber thrown our way," said Madden.
Four times this season, St. Pierre has made over 50 saves in a game.
"Her workload has helped her to stay sharp and is a great training
ground for the National team," said Madden. "Kim has been an asset to
our program and should help us to attract other top-level players to
McGill."
It's uncertain what games St. Pierre may play in Finland at the
3-Nations Cup, but one thing is for sure according to Madden, "She'll be
ready."
Canadian Team Head Coach Daniele Sauvageau has had plenty of
opportunity to follow the progress of St. Pierre. Sauvageau, a police
officer in Montreal, has been assisting the McGill coaching staff with
some practices this season.
Canada's opening game is Thursday (Dec. 10) vs the United
States. Canada will also play Finland in the 3-team double round-robin
tournament.

Nothing on the TSN website about the Three Nations Cup in Finland. They have
exclusive rights to women's hockey, do they not?

I just sent them an e-mail about it. Anything, tape delay during the wee
hours, whatever, would be better than nothing.

Anyone with information about coverage of games?

Hi,

I just checked with our communication director, Brad Pascall and he
has said that TSN will not be broadcasting any women's games until
March and only two from the Women's World Championship.

Just for your information.
