The FLASH is looking for information on ice tournaments for the fall. I
have seen various postings about these, but most of them are a bit too far
for us for our first tournament. I have previously played in tourneys in
Frazier MI and Madison WI and was wondering if anyone had any info about
either of these tourneys or others not that far from Chicago.

Out of Thin Air, SILA Women Win AIRHS
by Lisa McNeill

On Sunday August 9, 1998, the little known Seattle InLine Arena Women's
Rep
team officially became the National Champions of the American Inline
Roller
Hockey Series (AIRHS). The AIRHS National Championships were held in
Las
Vegas, Nevada at the Crystal Palace. The two-rink facility was in use
constantly from 6am to 11pm August 1-9 as 10 divisions, from Atoms to
Men's
Gold to Women, battled for the title of National Champion.

The SILA team, co-sponsored by K2, came out fired up for each and every
game, and was quickly regarded as the team to beat. After an impressive
5
straight victories, the team brought home the 1st place trophy, as well
as
medals, championship jerseys, and new hockey pants for each team member.

Sarah Calabria, the first string netminder for the SILA team, came away
with awards for both the tournament MVP and best goaltender. The team's

priority from day one was to take a national title; this goal was
accomplished in four months through dedication and sweat from the
players
as well as the coaching staff. Co-coaches Cindy Dayley and Zoe Harris
both
agreed that the great success achieved by the team directly resulted
from
the players' great attitudes and hard work. Cohesion was key for the
SILA
team-everyone meshed well both on and off the floor.

The undefeated SILA Women's Rep team consists of 16 players from the
newly
formed SILA Women's League. All players were invited to try out and
were
chosen based on their character, commitment, and talent. At the AIRHS
Nationals the team competed against such established teams as Team Gear
from San Diego, CA, Gear Wave from Missouri, and the Renegades of San
Jose,
CA. The Renegades boasted the talents of Manon Rheaume, who took off her

goalie pads and dressed as a forward for the tournament. The SILA team
plans to shoot for the national title again next season, and will be
holding tryouts again in the spring.

Subject: roller hockey skates

I need a pair of roller hockey skates, and i've been wanting to get a pair of
missions. But when i tried them on today at the store, the width seemed too
narrow for my feet. When i tried a bigger size, it was too long length wize. I
have had ccm and bauer ice skates and they have all fitted my feet fine. Is
there some kind of missions that might be widder? oR is it just my feet?

Subject: Compliment?

I got a phone call this afternoon from one of the coaches at my rink. He was
asking me to fill in at a camp that he's holding because he's not sure if one
of the other goaltenders is going to show up. Now, after asking me, he told
me that this camp was a powerskating camp, so only 4 goalies were needed and
he had sent out invites to some to help out. It seems that I wasn't good
enough to be one of these selected few, but I am fine when a backup or
replacement is needed. I accepted, of course, as any chance to play for free
is welcome. But, this wasn't the first time that I have been called to "fill
in" when other goalies haven't been there. I tend to read into things a bit
too much, but it seems to me that the only reason that I get called is because
everyone at the rink knows that I won't pass up a chance for extra practice.
I don't know wether to think that or to just take the phone call as a
compliment and be done with it. And for anybody that got this far in reading
this, thanks. I guess I just need to hear some other people's opinions so i
can put my overactive mind to rest.

HypotheticallyÉif there were a weekend tournament held in Milwaukee,
WI, how many women's teams out there would be interested in attending?
I'm not sure what skill level we would have, but the idea has come up
at a few of our meetings.

We would just like to get an idea of how lucrative it would be for us
to try to organize something. Please e-mail me separately if you
and/or your team might be interested in coming to Milwaukee for a
weekend sometime this winter.

Thanks a lot!
