Shannon Miller agreed to a three year $210,000 contract to coach the University of Minnesota-Duluth women's hockey team. Shannon will join the school July 1 and coach the women's club team this fall. In 1999 the team will begin playing an independent Division I schedule. Bob Nygaard, the athletic department spokesman, stated, "She brings us instant credibility." "She's done a lot of work in Canada and will help with recruiting there, as well as here in Minnesota."

Minnesota will have 5 varsity college programs in 1998 - University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Augsburg, Mankato, Gustavus, and St. Benedict (U of M being the only Division I school). In 1999 colleges adding the sport will include Bemidji, St. Cloud State University, and University of Minnesota-Duluth (St Cloud and U of M Duluth should be Division I).

This is great news for Minnesota and the surrounding states. There should soon be enough teams to create a Midwest Women's Collegiate Conference.

I don't think it is really right that she continues with selection
committee for Team Canada then ( as stated in various news articles).
Not Miller-bashing, but if someone is leaving , especially to help
the competitor(s), then why let them make such influential decisions?

Opinions ?

I haven't seen this on the list yet, but Angela Ruggiero is going to
attend Harvard next year. Congrats to Harvard, who will have two
Olympians on the woman's team next season as A.J. will rejoin the team to
complete her senior year.

I don't really have an opinion on whether or not Miller should be part of
the selection committee, but is the Minnesota-Duluth team really going to
be Americans only? The men's US collegiate programs attract successful
Canadian players, so why wouldn't some of the Canadian women also want to
attend American schools? (Absolutely no disrespect to Canadian
Universities intended.) Perhaps Miller's presence at Minnesota-Duluth
would attract some Canadian players to the team/school? (Although, as with
everything, I'm sure her presence will also keep some players from going
there.) Additionally non-North Americans attend college on this side of
the world. Isn't Russian National player Katia Pashkevitch coaching MIT's
team now?

Just curious, but are there any Canadian Olympians at US schools now? I've
read that some of the Canadian players were involved in the [West Concord
MA] Assabet Valley programs, but that's non-educational.
