Jill,

I have run into the same problems here in St. Louis too. Play it again sports
should be called play you again. I sold all of my goalie equip to them. The
main thing I was mad about was the glove and blocker I sold I was told were
going to be marked $75 a piece. They were the first week then they jumped in
price to what I payed for them new $150. I asked why and got the reply that
the were left handed and the clerk who bought the equip. from me didn't
realize this until after the check was written. Of course I could not do a
thing about it because "You should have mentioned the fact before you
accepted the check.

I don't want to make a big deal out of this or anything, because the two
people who wrote about PIAS were obviously screwed. I just wanted to
mention that the Play it Again Sports chain is (as far as I know)
independently owned and operated, based on the trade-in nature of the
stores. I will admit that I've had some less-than-perfect service at a
couple of them, but on the whole, I don't have too many complaints. I would
hate to see the whole chain badmouthed if there are only a few jerks out to
make a profit. Honestly, I'm thrilled there's a place at all in my area to
buy and sell used equipment. Otherwise, it would be sitting in my closet
until I forgot about it.

For the amount of money I got from PIAS, I could have had a much larger tax
deduction and the same clean closet. There are lots of children's leagues
in the city that could use our used equipment. To make a donation of your
used sport stuff, call the YMCA, your local Parks and Recreation Department
or Youth Center. You see the dividends on April 15 and in kids who are off
the streets. I will be donating my stuff from now on.

True, Play It Again doesn't offer much. Charitable contributions
can be a worthwhile way to dispose of equipment. For those of you
that want to try and sell your used equipment and name your
own price, send us a list of what you have to sell and we will post
it for free in the Used Equipment Forum section of our website
(www.kosports.com). We charge no fee and don't get in the middle of
transactions (unless specifically requested to, i.e. to handle a
charge card transaction). Your contact information goes in the ad,
interested parties contact you directly. Drop me a line if you're
interested.

Please remember that "Play it Again Sports" is a franchise operation. Not all
of the stores will be run or managed the same way. I've been to three
different stores in the Houston area, and they differ in the kind of sporting
equipment they have on hand. Now at least they are owned by the same person,
so their policies are similar, at least. It can still be a good alternative
for buying decent used equipment- not everyone can afford new stuff.

Our "Play it Again Sports" stores have been really good about supporting our
new high school ice hockey league- advertising in their program, and offering
the players a 20% discount (off their profit, not the consignee's) on hockey
gear.

just couldn't let everyone think they are all the same...
