Subject: Hockey Mom needs advice!

I've just arrived in from Brampton this morning (we left at 7:30 last
night--a long drive from Toronto to NH!) with a lot of mixed feelings. My
daughter has been playing with a squirt (12 and under) team since Oct.
She has worked hard and really loves playing. Because of the difference
in ages between Canada team ages and ours, we were put into the PeeWee age
group. The coach then brought in 5 girls with 84 birthdays and my
daughter and her defense linemate were moved to forward for the tourny.
Their team won the PeeWee C division, but my daughter hardly got to play.
In the semi final game, she got about 2 minutes for the entire game and in
the finals her line sat out the first two periods, my daughter was placed
on for one shift with the older players and her "line" was put out with 14
seconds left to go in the game. She was in tears. This tourny has been on
our schedule since October. But the team that went up wasn't the team we
had during the regular season. I really don't know what to say to her or
what to do. It was a really long drive and an even longer weekend to have
her basically watch a group of older girls play. Is this sort of thing
common? I kind of feel that if they didn't want to let the girls play,
they shouldn't have been included. They certainly didn't feel like they
had contributed to the win. It was not a very positive thing to have her
sobbing in my arms that the coach didn't think they were good enough to
play. I'd appreciate any words of wisdom from the collective well!

We played at Brampton in the Atom "BB"--under 12 division. Assabet
had their team and lost 4-0 and 7-1 their first 2 games. Their girls all
played. No pick ups for the tournament. They seem to have had a blast.
Some coaches forget that this is a developmental age group. Not just to
develop hockey skills but to give the players exposure in a variety of
hockey situations. All should have their chance to play short handed,on
the power play,in the last minute etc.
The girls that played all year brought you to where your team is at and
you cannot exclude them at year end , playoffs etc. Sure, play your
strongest in the last minute of a championship. But 2 minutes a game for
some. Not a chance.
The coaches are supposed to nurture the love of the game!!! Think 12
year olds will still be playing at 16 if they only get 2 minutes a game?
That all said we are the Hamilton Hawks. About 45 minutes from
Brampton. Buffalo plays their squirt girls in our regular season
league. They are slightly older but thats ok. However when they go to
tournaments different player start to appear on the rosters?????
In Ontario we can't do that. Our regular teams go. You can only pick
up 2 players from an equal or lower category to bring your roster up to
12.--So only if your real short of players!--No all star teams.
Someone should tell these coaches to take a hike---it's all about having
fun--A GAME!!!!!

Hi Cindy;

Well, with the great fun that is available to all hockey players, there are
also moments when hockey isn't giving you the right enjoyment. I feel
very sad for your daughter. There is no doubt that on EVERY team and
in every game there will be players who a better skilled than others.
It is the SOLE responsibility of every coach to use their players
wisely and fairly. Especially in tournaments! You enter a tournament
to win, or at least finish as high in the rankings as possible. Unfortunately,
far too many coaches emphasis the "wisely" part of coaching more often than
the "fairly" part. The GREAT coaches know how to use EVERYONE on their
bench fairly by selecting proper times to play the less skilled players and/or
mixing skilled and unskilled players throught.
Do understand, however, there will be special moments where a goal is needed
or defensive stand is needed to protect a small lead in the game. If the coach
has managed the bench properly, no one will be upset and everyone will feel
that they played a huge role in the game.

For your daughter, please explain to her that sometimes coaches make
mistakes and to keep up her exited spirit for the game because she will
have many more opportunities to contribute an enormous amount in the
future. For the present, I would politely correspond with the coach expressing
your concerns and ask if the coach could concider any alternate way of playing
all the players more evenly in ice time without sacrificing extremely
important
times of the game.
Yours in Hockey,
God Bless

"off-ice"??....how bout hockey in "hell"....or close to it? There is no
off season here in Houston. Prime roller hockey season is NOW! Like we said to
all those pesky people barbequeing in the park Easter Sunday (and whining
about us using a parking lot), "Picnics would be better if they were hockey!"
- - Sun-up, it's 80F and by noon 94F
- - Your "all weather" 82 durometer (hard) wheels barely hold a turn with the
90% humidity.
- - You think ice gear has a distinct aroma?....The mounted cops patrolling the
park routinely stop and ask about that "dead body smell" around our parking
lot We get close enough and they are convinced they don't have to
beat the bushes for the source!
- - "Anybody got water?".... like the swamp is thata way, bubba....an don't mess
with the racoons

OK...so the speed is "southern style"..."we's fixin to score a goal
here"....And we don't have "beer leagues" in roller, more like MEGA "iced tea"
league. But we do know how to keep a curl in our "do" in this humidity, and we
be working on our moves whilst y'all are "off-ice". Y'all come down now, ya
hear?

Happy skating...and conditioning!
Terry

p.s. many puns intended. On a more serious note.I do conditioning at the local
park on roller blades, with dance music in the headphones on my walkman. The
park is closed off to vehicular traffic after 3 p.m. during the week, but on
the weekend I have to be more vigilant for cars. Personal favorite music for
intervals? SALSA ! Great beat for quick foot work!

Are any TEAM USA players guest instructing or running Summer Hockey Schools?
Please forward details to HIPCHECK Magazine and I'll include in our Hockey

Congrats to Hipcheck this is the first time I have seen anything like this.
To find out what I am talking about check out page seven of the April issue of
Beckett Hockey Monthly. Down the middle of the page there is a
"ad/testimonial?" Speaking of women's hockey in Nagano and giving a phone num.
for sub. info check it out.
