Subject: Brampton Tournament - long whining message about why I'm losing

WARNING:
This is a long message, with an actual story, and it may appear as
whining, but it is trying to show a point.
IT IS NOT ADVERTISING !!
I have to get something off my chest, so here it is.

Interesting thing happened today.

For those who are not familiar with TeePee Communications, we run a
website dedicated to photos of women's hockey. The photos are mostly
of National Teams, with some COWHL AAA extra's. We run the website at
our own expense, and it is a very costly expense. All our own
personal money is used to support the site. TeePee sells
communications and home entertainment equipment, and the 2 are not
connected (financially) in any way. We do not ask for money from
anyone. We do it to promote the sport, because we enjoy women's
hockey so much. Lately we haven't had many pics to add to the site,
soooo .......

I called the Brampton Tournament to obtain access to shoot some pics
over the weekend. We have never really shot the lower levels of
women's hockey, although it is very good hockey, so I thought this
would be a good sideline, not just to add to the site but to promote
the sport further. It would be a lot of work to cover the 3 days of
the tourney, obviously concentrating on the finals, especially when
you do it for "free".
When I called this morning I was immediately (and quite rudely) told
"no" I could not have access. There were "too many" from the media
there already. Too many? How could you have too many people promoting
your function ? Nothing is there to stop me from buying a ticket and
sitting in the stands with my cameras and shooting from there.
But, I guess if there is already too much promotion going on, then
I'm not needed (sarcasm).

It kind of leaves a bitter feeling. I could call the organisers names
and say all kinds of things but that serves no purpose.
But if those of you who follow the website wonder why there aren't
many new pics, then this is one of the reasons.

Let's think back to the '97 Worlds, Three Nations Cup and the Olympic
exhibition games.
We received media passes to '97 worlds. Spent a week there, spent a
small fortune on equipment ( go price a Nikkor 300 mm f2.8D
Telephoto lens, and an F4 and F90x camera body, plus tons of film
and the expenses that go with it) and dedicated a heck of a lot of
our time there. We showed the worlds from a love-of-the-game point of
view. We didnt write nasty stories about womens hockey, any of the
teams, the coaches or anyone, like papers like the Toronto Sun did.
We appreciated our access and respected it. Then came November 10, a
Team Canada / Team USA game leading up to the Three Nations Cup. We
contacted CANADIAN HOCKEY (some of their members read this list) for
passes. Their media person expressed a concern that we were selling
Team Canada pictures, and about sponsors logos showing with
competitors logos. So, I wrote a letter saying we would not sell any
more photos and would not show a sponsors logo/name with a
competitors. I also offered to pay a royalty fee if I could keep
selling, but this was ignored, so I just settled with not selling. We
then received last minute passes. And don't get me wrong, we
APPRECIATE it ! We are a small company, but we are promoting the
sport on a worldwide level through our website, at our expense. The
photo selling didnt even put a dent our costs, but rules are rules.
Then something happened with the Canadian Hockey folks. I can't say
what because I don't know. We asked for passes (more than once) for 2
games of the Three Nations Cup. We never received an answer. We were
receiving Team Canada stats by email from Canadian Hockey. Cut off. I
asked for an explanation. No reply.

Possible reason #1:
I'm sure everyone knows the Angela James / Team Canada stories. Ange
is a good friend of my assistant. When she was cut, it was just about
the time we were cut too. We NEVER made a comment on this situation.
We purposely steered clear of making ANY public statements.Papers all
over Canada bashed Team Canada and their coach and their management
(and they get very good treatment from Canadian Hockey). I may be
wrong, it may just be coincidence, but something to think about.

Possible reason number 2:
Big business. We do nothing for Team Canada, why should they do
anything for us? It is a lot of work for them, and small guys like us
are easy to leave behind. Remember, money talks. I guess free
promotion isn't appreciated.

 Possible reason # 3:
Just an oversight on their part.

So we don't cover Team Canada, unless we sneak in another way.

And now (if you're still awake) we come to the Brampton Tournament.
I don't NEED to have me or my assistant cover this. It is a lot of
time, effort and money. We (really do) do it for you, the womens
hockey lover. Brampton will be back next year. But we won't be there.

I could go on and on and on and on and on (see, i told you) about how
i feel about not being able to spend my own money, dedicate countless
hours of work, to promote something I get no reward from. Well almost
no reward. When I get the "I just love your website" emails, all of
us here feel very good, and feel like we've done a good job.

But sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it.

Thanks for listening to my rantings.

List,

One of my teammates will soon be relocating to Kentucky. Her husband will be
teaching at the Universtiy of Kentucky. I am interested in finding out what

Thanks,
