Tina and group,
They started a girl's team of mixed ages in Phoenix. I have left my
name and phone # with different people who have passed it on to the team
managers, but they never call me. This has been going on for over 5
months. So unfortunately, it they build it, they may not return your
call. I would have to drive my daughter up to Phoenix at un-Godly hours,
but I wanted her to see what it was like playing with girls. There is a
women's team in Tucson, but I've been told that my daugher was too young
for this one.

What bothered me the most was that the girl's team in Phoenix has no
one to play. So they came down here one day to play one of our Bantam
house teams. I watched the girls as they took the ice and the body
language and attitude of most but not all of the girls was "Hey look at
me! I'm hot s--- because I play hockey. After seeing this, I thought
maybe I didn't want her playing on this team.

I know that in places like Minnesota where there is a ton of girls
hockey, this is probably not a problem. Of course there will always be
egos, in both women and men. But I'd rather have my daughter get a good
hockey experience, than play with other girls that have to make sure all
of their makeup is on right before they take the ice. BTW, the girls team
lost.

My daughter has had both an Itech and CCM Full Mask. She likes
the unobstructed view she gets from the clear plastic. She has
found that the CCM one fits her better. The chin rest is better
placed and can be adjusted to fit her, unlike the Itech one.
Also the chin rest placement on the CCM does not obscure your
vision as much as the Itech one does. If taken care of, it
doesn't scratch too easily. But a stick or puck hitting the
     plastic will cause damage.

It is dry in California, so we do not have problems with fogging,
but she has used it back east without much problem. We learned
an old Scuba trick for keeping diving masks clear that work on
hockey masks as well, and cheap to boot...

Spit on the inside of the mask and wash the spit around then
rinse with clear water, dry. Sounds strange, but it works.

I almost have my mind made up. I think I'm going to get a top visor
with bottom cage. Now, which brand is best? I've had recommendations
for CCM and Itech. What is the biggest difference between these two
brands?

Jess,

I have both a full Itech shield and a half shield. I only wear the
half shield for very low level games (and even then, I really shouldn't be
using it, I happen to like my dental work where it is); the full
shield is used for everything else (rollerhockey, full contact,
non-check, pickup, whatever). Having said that, I wouldn't buy
another full shield, when this one gets too scratched up, it will be
replaced with a cage. I wear glasses, with the full Itech, it just fogs
up too much, especially on the high humidity days. I've been using a
cage recently, the cage bars don't bother me as much as the two layers of
fog do.

Laurie,

Last fall Jena played one practice with the only girls team we have in
Spokane. The youngest girl was 14. Jena was barely 11 at the time. She
came up to some of the girls shoulders. She was able to keep up with them
on skills, but the size difference was huge. Anyway, when Jena got off the
ice she told me she never wanted to skate with the girls again. When I
asked her why, she said because they cussed so bad, worse than the boys. I
don't know if they think they should be cursing because they play hockey or
what. But I have to say that after awhile, after the novelty of girls
playing hockey, they'll be more relaxed about what they do, and all will be
okay.

Jessica -

I don't wear a mask (and have a crooked nose to prove it), but I work at
a hockey store, and have had to replace or repair more Itech cages than
CCM. The CCMs seem to be a bit more sturdy.

My daughter wears glasses and even with a cage, fogged up badly. She
finally went to contact lenses (well, actually one lense, that's all she
needs) and that was the best. She said it was so much better playing when
you could see! There was one type of glasses however, that worked well.
It wasn't the regular goggle, but a really cheap, tan plastic thing that
had swing out sides and was held on with elastic strapping. Can't remember
the name, but it looked like it should cost $5. It sat closer to the face
than the sport goggles so that she wasn't breathing under it and fogging it
herself from the inside. Maybe because she has a small face, but her
regular glasses and larger goggles didn't fit under her cage. I've seen
men with goggles and glasses under a cage, but most smaller kids don't have
room for them.

On the lighter side, I asked a friend who works for one of the NHL teams
what the pros did, and he said they were too vain to wear their glasses in
public.

It took some getting used to as I find the chin cup at a slightly different angle, but once I got used to it, I love it! It is further from the face, thus does not fog up anywhere near as easy and it has a design where it can be lifted with just one hand. So far it hasn't scratched like the older Itech models, but I have found that the most important thing you can do to keep scratches from forming is to ALWAYS put the helmet in a bag when storing it. I live in Cincinnati where we deal with high humidity all spring and summer, so I have always used defogging sprays with alot of success. The one I have found that works the best is called "Cougar", the trick with the defogging sprays is to spray it and let it set on the shield 30-60 seconds before wiping, if you wipe immediately you lost the benefit. Message-ID: I thought I would put my two cents in here for what it is worth. I don't know if giving special treatment to the girls is the right way to approach this. My daughter has been playing for 5 years with the boys and I was also of the mind, that if this is what she wants, she has to take what is given. Over the years though, I have seen where the smaller player is always at risk against a larger opponent, where the smaller player is male or female. We had a friend's son suffer a ruptured spleen after being checked into the boards at the players bench in a Bantam game. There has been talk in USA Hockey of changing the classification from age to size. Perhaps this is the approach that needs to be used. This is a nonsexist argument that even the male players and parents can support. Then the girls can play with boys their own size, as can boys that are smaller than average for their age. Allowances can be made for elite players to play up, etc as they can today in the age categories. It maybe too late to get USA Hockey to consider this issue this year, but if enough parents are concerned and express their concern, then maybe we can get things changed. Also, if USA Hockey is to consider a change like this, then we also need to have the Canadian governing body move in this direction also, otherwise, tournaments between teams from the two countries will not be equitable, more so than now. The CCM is a one peice plexi top and cage bottom combined with a comfortable, fully adjustable chin strap. I spent about two and a half hours trying to figure out the best way of attatching it to my CCM helmet. There are a number of hardware options that allow adjustments to suit even the most odd shaped heads.. After finally getting it together, I was anxious to try it out... At first the plexi made me feel claustrophobic mainly because of the decrease of airflow but the range of vision was much improved. There is a slight distortion where the cage begins, similar to what some sunglasses do... I did buy an anti fogging spray even though this visor model is pre-treated. The soap or spit method works just as well though... Basically, it took time to get used to it, but all in all I really like it. It locks down into place but it also stays up when you want it to. One complaint I have is that if you want to wipe it on the inside, you need to take off your helmet. I payed $39 for mine. I also started out as a right wing, and I was playing at my age level, and I was fine.....a few bumps and bruises here and there, but that can be expected with a sport like hockey. In the end I decided to become a goalie. I find that girls who can compete at their age level with the boys in the ned will become the better players.
