I actually washed my shin guards, shoulder pads and elbow pads in the washing machine with regular detergent and a little bleach. I had to push them down for awhile cause they float, but it did not hurt them at all and now they smell like new. If only my gloves didn't have leather palms, I'd wash them too.

The only gear I've ever had get moldy on me was my shin guards. I
poured baking soda all over them and put them out in the sun, and
they're all better now!

Hint for keeping your hands from smelling like dead animals after
playing hockey in leather-palmed gloves: Put cedar (either chips in
bags, or actual pieces of wood) in each of your gloves each time after
you wear them. This works just like shoe trees do - the wood helps
the glove dry out faster, and the cedar helps with the oder. Neither
the gloves nor your hands will smell like ceday, and they won't smell
like road kill either!
You can get cedar in the closet section of a store. I've done this
for several years now, and don't have to keep my hands well away from
my face when trying to get to sleep after a late practice or game any
more!

Every now and then when the equipment gets to smell REALLY bad, I fill up
the tub with detergent and warm water, slosh everything around and then
hang it to dry outside. I too have leather palms on my Joffa gloves but
they get the same treatment with no serious effects and I've been doing
this intermittently for 3 years. Just don't put the stuff in direct
sunlight if you can help it.

I came up with a solution for my daughter's "stinky" stuff. We fill a large
plastic tub with water and laundry detergent, throw all the equipment in to
soak (except gloves), and weight it down with a plastic bucket (we used one
full of paint). We leave it in overnight, then rinse it off the next day and
hang it outside. The fresh air helps get rid of the stench also. It smells
like brand new after this treatment!

If the palms are already bad, try having them repalmed. Then use
Neatsfoot oil on them and clean em regulary with saddle soap. Always
follow a cleaning with more oil. They'll last for ages and breakin,
noproblem! (doesn't work with sim leather) Also, try buying shingaurds
that have a removable pad in the front. They go well in the
washer/dryer. I wash everything else in the bath tub and hang to dry.
