To everyone,
In regards to the obvious desire to have the national
championship games broadcasted, how about if we send in a petition?
With tons and tons of e-mail addresses on them? Or is the individual
approach better? I like the petition idea, and would like to start it.
..I have a bunch of names already...e-mail me your name and e-mail
address please, to email@hidden

Let's get this thing going!

Since I am doubtful that the US TV stations will cover the Women's Ice hockey
in the Olympics, is there any organization that is planning on taping the
games being broadcast on Canadian TV? If so would they be able to sell
copies to any interested parties?

The U.S. stations will definatley be covering the Olympics and most likely
the women's hockey games (at least the medal games), especially if the
U.S. is involved. It might not be played during prime time, but it is likely it
will be covered. You might want to call the U.S. Olympic Committee and
ask them what will be covered or ask them which network will be
carrying the games and ask them what they plan on broadcasting.

I don't have the addresses of the two people here that were
looking for players for the Las Vegas Tournament. The Rays now
have their roster complete and there are a couple of players who
will not be playing on our team, but would like to play for one
     of your other teams.

Please send me an email and I will send you the phone number of
our team manager. She can put you in touch with the women who
would like to play. All I remember is one team was from Texas
and the other from Arizona. Please write.

     Thanks
     Peggy

Last night I spent a few pleasant moments with the guy who runs the pro
shop at our rink. He had just returned from a hockey equipment trade show
in Montreal. He had great calalogues of women's equipment with him. He
also said that there were lots of women hockey players (Cammi, Manon, Lisa
etc. ) hawking the goods. It was felt that women's hockey was the fastest
growing sport around. Just like the miracle in Lake Placid lit a fire
under US hockey, just having women in the games would do the same thing.
So get ready to record those glorious golden moments off the major
networks. At this point who cares who wins, because we all have. We are
there, people are noticing our presence. I get chocked up just thinking
about it. I want to go!!! Congrats to all!
Debbie

Kelly Connelly
Canadian Editor
Women's Hockey Magazine

Dear Ms. Connelly,

I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues on the successful
launch of the first edition of Women's Hockey. A publication such as yours is
long overdue and is a much appreciation addition to the world of women's hockey.
I would also like to make a few comments and corrections concerning your
editorial and the opinion piece by Glynis Peters on the book, On the Edge, that
I co-wrote with Elizabeth Etue. You write in your editorial that "some
associations in Canada have gone so far as to blacklist" On the Edge. This is
not true: only one association, the Ontario Women's Hockey Association, has
blacklisted the book. As reported in the Globe and Mail sports section in
January, the association has issued a memo to its members telling them not to
sell the book at tournaments; forced tournament organizers in Goderich, Ontario,
to uninvite Elizabeth Etue who was to appear as the guest of honour in the fall
(Elizabeth grew up in Goderich); urged the Hockey Hall of Fame to pull our book
off its shelves and; as you know, unsuccessfully exerted pressure on your
publication not to run the favourable review of the book by Marg McGregor and
successfully managed to have you agree to not allow Elizabeth Etue write for
your publication. Clearly the OWHA, which was both praised and criticized in
our book, is not familiar with the basic principles of free-speech. We trust,
however, that your readers are, and would hope they decide for themselves
whether or not they read On the Edge.
I would also like to point out a major oversight concerning the opinion
piece on On the Edge by Glynis Peters. While it is puzzling that Ms. Peters was
asked to write a review of the book given she is the manager for women's hockey
for the CHA -- an organization that is closely scrutinized in On the Edge -- it
is even more surprising that nowhere in your publication is Ms. Peters' position
noted. As a journalist who has herself reviewed books, I have never heard of a
publication requesting a review or opinion piece by an employee of an
organization that is criticized in the book. Why not? Because it's a blatant
conflict of interest. I'm surprised that both the editors of Women's Hockey and
Ms. Peters, who has dealt extensively with the media, failed to grasp this.
Whether or not Ms. Peters' thoughts on the book would have been the same
if she didn't work for the CHA we'll never know. But as an employee of the CHA,
Ms. Peters clearly felt the need to defend herself and her organization under
the guise of an opinion piece. This is likely why her criticisms of the book
were so unsubstantiated. It is also no doubt why the piece came off sounding
so... well, defensive.

Best of luck with future issues.

	Megan Williams
