R.L.,
I play in a mostly mens senior league in Dallas but about two years ago the
sr women were asked to form a team to play against the Dallas girls (16 &
under, I think). We were told that we couldn't "wind up" above our waist
for a slapshot under the girls rules. I think this was a house rule though
because I haven't found anything in the USA Hockey rule book about it. Your
coach may just want you to focus on your wrist, snap, backhand, etc. shots
because they are usually more accurate and produce more goals.
Hope this helps!!!

Debbie's comment about the difference in locker rooms between the
boys/girls (burping, throwing spit balls), reminded me of a story
(true).
When I first started the hockey program for the girls back...oh, 15
years ago (??!) Anyway, I remember I had two boys referring their
games that I knew from the neighborhood that also ref'd house league.
Kyle came up to me one day and said "It really hit home yesterday
during the game that I was actually doing a girls game. I'm so used
to hearing the boys male - lower toned - voices saying 'oh, sh _ _'
when they miss a shot. Well, yesterday one of the girls missed a
shot and I hear this little squeeky girls voice say 'oh, sh_ _'."
He, of course demonstrated it better vocally than I can write it.
May be one of those stories you need in person!

USA Hockey rules allow slapshots by girls of any age providing they are
not playing on a "boys" team.
The note to rule 617(a) (high sticks) states "the use of the "slap shot"
in the 10-and-Under (Squirt-Boy's only) age classification and below is
prohibited."
Therefore, since you play on an all girls team, if you are able to take
a slapshot - you are allowed to take a slapshot.
Many referees are unaware of this difference in the rules for girls and
boys. Many hear the word squirt and automatically apply the boys rule to
girls squirts. Since girls squirts are 12 and under, girls that are
squirts for girls teams can actually be peewees under the boys age
rules.
Also, on an all girls team, mouthguards are required at all age levels.
Hope this helps.
