Too bad you were aware of an all female hockey school
about 20 minutes north of Penticton in Summerland, B.C.

They have been there for many years and is one of B.C.'s
Premiere Female Hockey Schools. Training is very intense
and comprehensive.

Check out their web site at www.center-ice.com

The 1997 schedule for the summer is there and a
description of the program.

Sue,

Thanks for the compliment. I was a little worried about the article, and
am glad it came off. I have already started on a new column for the next
issue. I had extra questions, so I just started to put them together. I
also hung around the locker room with my 10 year old daughter to see what
was up. Seems make-up and boys are also huge hockey questions for teenage
girls. I think the boy Squirt locker room is safer! They only burp and
throw spit balls.

Hi Anne:

I know how you feel listening to everyone else about which hand to put
on top of your stick. I just picked out the stick with the "drop" that
felt good to me. I am right handed and use a right drop stick. I know
most people would say that this is backwards, but so what. This is what
is comfortable for me. Keep working on your shot; we all have to start
somewhere. Work on you wrist shot and don't worry about your slap shot
for now. Goals are scored on a quick wrist shot, backhand shot, & snap
shot. Keep practicing. It's not upper body strength that you should work
on; work on your technique. It's the snapping over motion; push with
your bottom hand, pull with your top hand that gives you a good shot.
Practice hard, have fun!

The will be at the New England Sport Center in Marlboro, MA. The
facility has 4 rinks, snack bar,
lounge/restaurant, video games, and a sport shop. I believe the dates
are april 9-13th.

The reason why we went to Okanagan is because there were 16 boys and one
girl, my daughter. She has played for four years on teams that usually
have two to three girls on them. It would be nice if she had the
opportunity to play on a girls team, but here in Arizona, it's just not
the case yet. They have started a girls team in Phoenix, but have had my
phone # for months and haven't called me. I spoke to one of the coaches
when they were in town about getting her on the team and he passed on my
#. I just don't have time to sit on these people currently to include my
daughter. Plus the season is almost over. But come August, they will
definately feel m y butt on their backs. ;)

Subject: right vs left handedness
Message-ID:

I am a recreational player in Northern California who have been playing ice
hockey for over one and a half years. I didn't consult anyone when I first
shopped for a stick. So when I saw the letter "L" and "R" on the stick, I
thought a right handed person should use a right stick. I felt very
comfortable with it, and never paid attention to the right vs left
handedness issue
until last year, when I started playing goalie. Since I am right handed,
I have to learn to puck handle on the left. So I bought a left stick, as
it is easier to learn puck handling using a regular stick than a goalie
stick. I shoot with it a few times, and to my surprise, I can master it
quicker than when I learned shooting right. After playing right for one
and a half year, I decided to switch left to see what it is like. To my
amazement, I found no difference in my game after switching for 2 weeks.
May be it is because my puck handling and shooting are so terrible, it
doesn't matter whether I use a left or right stick. It can also be
because I am left foot dominant, so I can transfer weight better when I
shoot right, but I am right hand dominant, so my arms can do better when I
shoot left. The only difference I found since using a left stick is I
have enough power to do a sweep check which I can't do before, but it does
not seems to be helpful, as a sweep check always get me out of position.

So my advice is you cannot even trust how comfortable you feel when holding
a stick. Because there are people like me who feel comfortable with both
a left and right stick. I prefer the advice of using the dominant hand at
the top, and do otherwise only if you don't feel comfortable with it.

My 2 cents,
Pauline Yeung
