To all the womens collegiate club teams in the US. The Ohio State University
is hosting the womens collegiate club championships this year. We are
trying to see how many womens club teams would be interested in playing in
the tournament, to decide whether to have six or eight teams participate.
We have sent out invitations to the colleges we have addresses for. If you
do not recieve one and may be interested please contact me and we will send
you one. We plan to have two teams from the east coast, two teams from the
CCWHA, (Central Collegiate Womens Hockey Associtation) our team, and
possibly two teams from the west. This is tentative due to not knowing the
interest level. If you have more questions, email me at email@hidden.

Judi (and Bree and Kelsey): I can sense from your first post that there
is a little animosity in CA! I have heard stories that this is the case
in all hockey down there. While I can understand a healthy rivalry, it
can get out of hand when it has what I suspect is an overall negative
effect. I have heard that there is a lot of infighting in CA hockey,
both boys and girls. I have been told in the past that the girls teams
down there have been around longer than our teams. Now consider this,
to the best of our knowledge, the appointment of a District level
Section representative came about as a result of our complaints about a
lack of same. A rep was finally appointed for AK when we complained
that a District level rep was not enough. I have come to a conclusion
and as a result, would like to see us all get together and make some
change.
I drew my conclusion from several things, but a good part of it has come
from what I have seen here on plaidworks. Or, in a way, what I have not
seen. You included my post on "Bad Hockey Day" in your post to Chuck.
I also sent to Chuck a more detailed post, that further explained the
situation and asked him for some support. I will forward it to you as
well. To date, Chuck has not (hopefully due to a lack of time)
responded.
My conclusion is this: We are so busy infighting, we haven't taken the
time to make sure that we're getting a fair shake! Witness the fact
that Chuck's post was so upsetting to your players. Now consider, Team
CA has a 2-2-0 record with The Blue Diamonds. If The Blue Diamonds used
14 year olds in the games earlier in the season, wouldn't you like an
opportunity to have some OFFICIAL games where all your players could
attend and the 14 year olds could not?
I have received a post stating that a team in WA/OR is getting a really
hard time from their State (?.., Pacific Northwest) president. That
post led me to believe, that there is a lot of darkness all over the
District. I would like to see that change!!! Big time!!! The only way
it can is, if we share information and knowledge, develop a united
front, and take our case as high as it needs to go! Topics that need
resolution are the pathway to Nationals, a fair methodology for
determining who our reps are, and a fair policy for interplay with boys
teams. In regard to interplay, I am referring to a policy that will
establish some guidelines that would allow our teams to have games with
boys teams, without a lot of baloney, when there is no one else to play!
A District Tournament for Squirts and PeeWees would have set the stage
for resolution of who the best teams in the District are. Who knows,
maybe your daughter's team and The Blue Diamonds would have gone on to
Boston! As it is now, your team and our team will represent Squirts,
and our PeeWee team and a team I know nothing about will represent
PeeWees. If everything I am hearing is true, a lot of people are really
upset about it!!!
Here are a few more landmarks to support my conclusion:
1. I posted a letter regarding the fact that there are more teams
desiring to try for Boston than there are Pac District slots for teams.
I get a letter back stating that the writer is surprised, he thought
that was the way it was always done! I also got a post from plaidworks
from a woman in Seattle that said something similar. I posted the guy
back and explained that in past years, the District refused to hold ANY
play-offs for girls! And, that in lieu of the fact there was no tourney
at the District level, we fought beyond the District to get a slot at
Nationals, and have been going ever since. A point, our actions were
never intended to prevent other teams in the District from going to
Nationals, as is so often said! The last thing The Firebirds want to do
is limit the growth of girls hockey in the District, and some nearby
teams to play!
2. A letter was posted stating that a Girls/Women Section rep was
picked by the people she would represent. Then I get another letter
stating that there was not widespread knowledge of the fact that a
selection was about to be made, or that any input would be allowed.
There are other factors that I considered in drawing my conclusion. But
the bottom line is, we're in the stone age when it comes to getting
along and communicating. The internet is a great way to put that behind
us. Much gets said that is not true about all of us. Let's get
together and build bridges instead of fanning the fires that burn them!
If we let the good 'ole boys keep us busy jousting each other, we'll
never get around to taking care of the real issues that our fledgling
sport needs to have addressed in the Pacific District!
Sincerely,
Lyle Anderson, Alaska Firebirds
PS We would be interested in hearing any input that others may have on
these issues. Particularly from those who have gotten past this stage!
Special to Bree: We gave your post on your player Bios to our goalie
Ohara. She thought it was neat that so many people would see it! We
would like to know if The South Coast Sabres was really made up of boys
who were "new to ice hockey?"
We all wish you good luck, and tap the pipes for more luck when you need
it!

I found your email addresses on a women's hockey web site and just wanted to
let you know that this past Friday Colgate University agreed to grant its
women's team varsity status. For those of us who first started the ball
rolling in 1990 by taking Colgate to court, we consider this the final
victory!
Although Colgate did issue a press release on Friday (Jan.18), it has yet to
be posted on its web site: www.Colgate.edu. An article was published by Syrac
use Post-Standard on Saturday and you can locate it at:
www.Syracuse.com/sports/content/other/0118P.COLGAT.html if you are
interested.
Many of you, your teammates and your coaches have supported us along the way
and we are so grateful. While I can't personally give you information about
today's Colgate team (I'm an alum), I can locate people who know more about
the situation. But please feel free to email me anyway.

There is a woman's hockey team forming in Toledo. They skate out of the
Tam-O-Shanter rink in Sylvania. I would suggest contacting Mike Greeder
at 885-1167. He may be able to supply you with the information as to
when they play or to contact.

In my last email to Lyle I was mistaken.... I said that we had chosen our
own representative and I was wrong. Really, I was just happy at the one
who was chosen... or the one that applied for the position. So, I
inadvertently said we had chosen the person whereas I really should have
said I was happy with the selection. I think she will do an excellent job.
As for the process... I am unsure of it... as for being represented by the
officials who also handle the boys' team... I must say that our officials
(directors) support us tremendously. They are here for us as much as the
boys' teams... which is, I assume, a rare thing. Maybe I am naive but I
feel well supported at this time.
Lyle, if you could send me (us) a copy of the Pac Dist. Guide Book that
would be great. I have not heard of it... and I probably am not "up" on
all the rules and regulations.
Our bottom line, as I understand it, is promoting the growth and
development of girls'/women's hockey. Our mission here is to develop a
girls' program players can move through at each age, for their skill level.
We hope to be a great recreational avenue, as well as a stepping stone to
more competitive hockey in the collegiate ranks. We are totally "for"
girls programs and don't agree with elite or state teams that ruin teams
and/or programs. Our program is designed to aid as many girls as possible
in their efforts to play the sport of ice hockey. At this time we have one
team shooting for Nationals but we refuse to take the "win at all costs"
attitude. We hope our entire girls' program will be around for years,
giving girls a place to play hockey,... and if it produces a winning
team... then great. Winning is wonderful, but not at the cost of the
development of the sport as a whole.
Sorry for the previous mess-up in wording. My mistake.

Subject: Slap shot; handedness of sticks
Message-ID:
At the NHL FANtasy (part of the All-Star celebrations; fun) they had booths
where you could time your slapshot, using real sticks but very light plastic
pucks or balls. I tried a couple of slapshots (which I have never tried
before), and the times were pathetically slow, around 30 mph. I wondered
about my wrist shot (which I have tried before) and it was faster, about 34
mph. [These are both very slow times, I know.] Obviously the point of a
slapshot is that it flies faster, since it's certainly slower to get off and
less accurate, but do those of you who play recreational hockey actually find
that your slapshot is enough faster to make it worthwhile? I don't have a
whole lot of upper body strength, but I imagine I'm as strong as a lot of
other women who play recreationally.
Here's another question. When I first started fooling around with hockey,
mostly just practicing in the back yard with my son, I had a right-handed
stick. Then when I signed up for the hockey class (starts tomorrow) and had
to get all my equipment, I read that if you're right-handed, you most likely
are better off with a left-handed stick, so I got myself one. The
article said that the majority of NHL players shoot left, and I was so
skeptical about that that I checked. It's true. The article also said that
you should see how you sweep with a broom, and the same hand should be on top
on your hockey stick.
I'm finding that with the new stick I'm less good at shooting, but much
better at poke checks and other things that involve mostly the top hand; I
couldn't do anything one-handed with the right-handed stick, but I can with
the left-handed stick because my right hand is stronger and more accurate.
The guys at the equipment store said that beginners should just use the stick
that feels right, but neither stick feels righter than the other. I hate it
when people appeal to an intuition I don't have. Do any of you guys have
advice on which handedness is better?

i was told by a guy who plays D
(i'm a goalie most of the time,
right handed stick) that you should
see how you sweep with a broom,
and that's the side you tend to
shoot from. i'll switch when
sweeping, but the majority of the
time i sweep with the broom on my
left. this same fellow made an
observation about how i hold things
two handed (left hand is usually
low), but i'm a little skeptical
about that one as it changes depending
on conditions.
the key is to go to a hockey store
(or workout place, or even skate'n'shoot)
and find a stick that's right, and a
stick that's left. play with them.
put street hockey balls on the floor
and see which feels better to you
to handle. there's a possibility
you might be ambidextrous, which
means you can REALLY mess with the
goalie!
i'm right handed, and i find i have
more control and accuracy shooting
left than i do right. it's just not
there when i try a right-handed stick.

Also, even if you bat right (as I do) you may shoot left. It is really up

Anne-
As far as the myth that those who are right handed should shoot
lefty and vice versa--it is true to an extent. Of course, whichever
hand is your dominant hand SHOULD be your upper hand, because it is
stronger for things like poke checks, etc., as you noticed. But I am
righty and shoot righty, and did not learn until about 6 months into
when I started playing which was the "correct" thing to do. The best
advice i heard from anyone was from Dennis Gendron, the head coach of
the Albany River Rats, whom I had as a coach at a hockey camp. He
said that technically, whichever hand you write with should be the
top hand on your stick. But if it's not, at this point it's obviously
too late to change...and just keep it in mind if you ever have your
children play hockey so you know which way to start them off.
As for your problem with not knowing which way you shoot--the
only advice i can offer is just pick one and continue with it, and
hopefully in time it will feel comfortable--perhaps the awkwardness
is due to the fact that you are not fully comfortable holding a stick,
period.
And from what the man at the store told you; about notice which
way you sweep a broom...I actually wonder if he tells his beginner
males this also...and it is not true, because I sweep lefty and shoot
righty... hope this helped some.

You might also think about how you hold a canoe paddle or a pool cue.
Although I am predominantly right-handed, I shoot pool (badly!) holding
the cue 'left-handed' (right hand in front) and hold a paddle (typically)
with left hand up top. I could play with either stick but I am most
comfortable with a right-handed hockey stick.
As Jill said, the best way is to try both shooting off both sides and
figure out what is most comfortable for you.
see you tonight, Jill!

A tip one person told me is drop a stick on the ground in front of the person
who's trying to figure out which way to shoot, then have her pick it up. Tell her
simply to hold it like a hockey stick. Whichever way she ends up holding it is
the way she should shoot.
I golf right and play hockey left. Learned golf righty as a little kid, so will
never get over those bad habits. Hurt my shoulder a few years ago (hockey is sooo
much less dangerous than rugby), so it has a limited range of motion above the
shoulder. I figured the upper hand doesn't have to move around as much as the
lower hand, and is less likely to go above the shoulder, so started hockey
shooting left. One of these days, I'm going to try a lefty set of golf clubs,
just to see how it feels.

Seems like you are getting a lot of advice on you handedness. I may be
able to help with your shot difficulties. Many people take wrist shots
with their wrists already extended or extended too early. At the start of
the shot, the top of the hand should be facing downwards towards the ice
and as the stick sweeps forward the wrist rolls until the top of the hand
faces away from the ice.
As for the slapshot, it is much more effective when you have momentum
behind it. This means slapshots taken while moving are usually much harder
and faster than those taken standing still. The slapshot utilizes the
entire weight of the body as opposed to the wrist shot which has much less
force behind it.
Hope this doesn't confuse more,
Regards,
Milton
