Deborah,
We are the Old York Raider's Girls Team. We don't have a goalie for you,
but would be interested in playing you.
We are a B team with members ranging in age from 17 down to 10. Our
youngest members do not usually play with us because they are with boys
teams. If you have any ice time (ours is all used up) and you think we
would be a match, lets talk further. We have played the University of Penn
Women and the Penn Freeze, so a Womens team would not be unusual. That is
not to say we are so good, we just like to play and will stretch age limits
if we have to. Besides, as the mother of one of the kids, I'd use just
about any excuse for a weekend in Manhattan.
Our goalie is in a cast for three weeks (figure skating is so dangerous),
but maybe if you don't get a goalie and you want to play us, we could flip
for our regular goalie and our back-up when she returns. Think it over and
get back to me.

Folks: This is a post I sent to Chuck Collins, who coaches a Girls
Squirt
team in Northern CA. Unfortunately, it came back from my mail server.
It's a pretty sad and negative post. It does illustrate what some of
the
girls programs are up against! Having been in State Tourneys for
several
years, we took it for granted that we couldn't lose ground! We did and
YOU CAN TOO! Be vigilant, and never let em wear ya down!
Note to Chuck: I corrected some of the language regarding the story of
Johanssen's appointment, to more accurately reflect history!
**********************************************************************
Chuck: In the past three years we have had two PeeWee teams. One we
designate an "A" team and send to Nationals, the other, we would do with
what we could. That included Boys State Tournaments. In the past all
that was required, (after a little battling) was a filing form and the
fee. All three of those years we entered our team in the Boys PeeWee
"D" tourney.
This year, we want to register our ONLY PeeWee team in the Boys PeeWee
"C" tourney. For some reason, although it was not required in the past,
I was told that we not only had to file the application and fee, but
Alaska State Hockey Association approval would be needed as well. I
suspect this had to do with us competing for the more prestigious "C"
trophy. As The Alaska Firebirds Rep to ASHA, I made the motion. It
failed with three votes for, and fifteen against. There was one
abstention.
The saddest part of it all, the Pacific District appointed rep for our
state, never so much as said a word! Some representation! The history
with this woman is also sad. Early on in our program, we were the only
Girls program in Alaska. There was also no representation for the
Girls/Women Section in the Pacific District. We asked the powers that
be for a District level rep. One was appointed from CA, Mike Johanssen.
We then asked that we at least be allowed to pick an Alaska rep,
subservient to Johannsen, of our own choosing. The District chose
one for us. When the chips are down today, she says nothing!
Chuck, I hope things go better for you than they have for us. It is not
the manlike thing to do, but when I thought of what the player reaction
would be, I came closer to crying than I have been since my father died.
I would like to ask for your support at this time. My proposal is this:
Lets get all the teams in our district together at the end of each
season, and let all comers play off for any and all births to Nationals
(Zoe, are you watching?)!
Hopefully this would allow your team a chance to go to Nationals, rather
than watch a team you know your team can beat, go on without a
challenge! It would also allow us (The Firebirds) post season play,
prior to Nationals, without having to contend with people on a State
Board, that seem more interested in making sure their sons don't lose to
girls, than advancing the growth of ALL hockey in Alaska.
For clarification, I want to point out that my motion today would not
have allowed Girls teams entry into those State Tournaments that they
would be unqualified to advance from. I.e. Tier I/II. It would have
allowed us some preparatory competition before Nationals, in those years
when the other Girls teams in Alaska did not desire to advance to
Nationals.
We won't give up and I expect that we'll be raising quite a ruckus
between now and the Pacific District Mid-Annual Meeting in Reno!
Good luck in your endeavors!

Well Lyle, I get on line with this group and who do in find in my list
of received messages, but YOU! I see you're finding creative ways to
shed the high energy that came from yesterdays meeting.
Talked to Gary and if we can get warm-ups picked up from the shop (for
some reason we weren't contacted to get ours like the other teams),
we'll have them at practice today.
I downloaded some things from Andria Hunter and Laura Stamm last night.
Talk to you later.

OK: Uncle! My son has been in my mail. Not only am I sorting through
67 new messages from snowboarders all over the world, but I am missing a
post! Plus, my mail settings and address book are corrupted. Kids are
wonderful, but the pandemoneum they can cause is unbelievable!
Whoever it was writing the book, please write me again!!! Also,
for those of you who have been interested in The Alaska Firebirds
lawsuit: The original judge assigned to the case has retired. A new
one has yet to be assigned. So the case continues to pend, pend,
pend...
Thx, Lyle

Does anybody have any info on womens hockey in Cornwall, Ontario? I am
going to be passing through there on the 17th and 18th of Jan and wondered
if I could get on the ice. E-mail soon because I go off-line for awhile on
Tuesday.
