Hi Chuck, just for some further information for you....You should be able
to get to the Women's World Championships in about an hour and a half from
Brampton. You also should consider getting tickets as soon as possible, I
hear they are sell very quickly.

Regards,
          Milton

Caroline -
Chuck and Lyle have already given you excellent "technical" advise I can only
give you one more testimonial but from Michigan instead of the East Coast.

As a kid in Mass. I remember our team getting "bumped" from the ice schedule
on the theory that girls shouldn't "waste" boys ice. Our coach went out and
bought ice directly and that's how we went on to play for several years (and
win a national championship in 1981 -though I'd moved on by then!).

Now in Michigan I started coaching a Peewee team last year and I personally
contracted with the rink for the ice time. We had bad ice times all fall but
I just kept networking with every sr. and jr. team I could find and picking
up all the times they couldn't use but that the association had given them (
which in turn I used for either the girls, or a sr. women's team, or just
pick up with friends - anything to let people know I wanted the ice!!)

This year we have four teams in Ann Arbor; 1 Squirt, 2 Peewee and 1 Midget.
Additionally we have 3 Sr. women's teams. I contracted for some of this ice
directly and, surprise surprise, our local youth association also contacted
me and asked if I wanted to "help" them!! They had more ice than teams so we
buy alot of ice directly from them.

There are always ways to get ice..you just might not get "prime time". Out
here I'm not always sure that that's a gender issue..it's more that you are
the lowest on the totem pole when the request comes in. Most of our female
teams do get better ice time when they've been requesting it from the rink
for a few years. (And this is comparable to what new men's teams face as
well).

I agree with an earlier comment..if you are part of a public rink and/or an
association that gets any state/national funding you MUST BE ALLOWED TO
SKATE. There are still alot of associations out there that haven't caught on
to Equal Opportunity. Call Karen Lundgren (517)547-6565. She has alot of case
studies/info and can get
you some USA Hockey assistance if need be.

Keep working on it and have fun!!!!

Enclosed is a copy of an article published in the New York Times on January
9, 1997. For those of you who have written regarding problems with obtaining
ice and gaining recognition for the sport, your letters, comments and support
for those media organizations that publish articles about women's hockey will
help close that gap.

It does work. The Manchester, NH, television station that carried the UNH
vs. Cornell game proudly displayed a letter it received from Seattle
regarding the coverage. Margret Meade was correct.

Subject: More on Brampton Tournament
Message-ID:

I am responding to the request on what the tournament in Brampton
is like from those that have attended it before.

The tournament is played in several rinks in and around Brampton.
We stayed at hotels near the airport, which is centrally located
to all the rinks. It took about 20 minutes to get from the hotel
to the farthest rink. The rinks range from older facilities to
very modern ones. If I remember correctly, all the rinks had
snackbars open during the tournament for a quick drink or bite to
     eat.

It is very valuable to get your hands on a program and the
schedule if you want to try and watch any of the other divisions
playing since things are spreadout so far. The tournament was
well run and it was great to see so many girls and women playing
the sport. I love watching the little girls playing, wish I had
learned to play at that age.

One rink is the headquarters and several things are available
there. The best is the massage and chiropractic personnel on
hand for your use. You can get a warm up massage there before a
game or one afterwards to soothe your sore muscles. Also there
is licensed personnel available to put you back together after an
injury and get you playing again. All these services are free.
I am probably giving away our teams secret weapon, since many
teams didn't take advantage of these services and luckily the
lines were never too long when we dropped in. Now that I am
telling you about it, I maybe sorry.

The tournament was also selling an assortment of T-shirts,
sweatshirts and other clothing with girls/women's hockey as the
theme. These items were on sale at a limited number of rinks,
but the headquarters had the best selection.

Some things to remember, see and do -

For the adults in the group. All bars, etc are closed the Friday
of the tournament because this is Good Friday.

Shopping. There are a number of large sporting goods stores with
big selection of hockey equipment. If you need to replace
equipment, this trip is a good time. The equipment can be
cheaper in Canada, and you get your tax money back when you
return to the US. There are some big sales going on that weekend
always too. We can't believe how cheap tape is up there. Stick
and sock tape in California runs about US$3 a roll. At the
tournament we have bought 12 rolls for CAN$9. Everyone on our
team gets their years supply when there.

Sightseeing. The team usually has time to get out and see some
of sights in and around Toronto. Niagara Falls is only a couple
of hours away and can be visited in an afternoon. It is worth
seeing, even when frozen. Also the Hockey Hall of Fame is in
downtown Toronto, don't miss it! Gretzky's restaurant is near
the BlueJay's stadium. Unfortunately the Leafs don't have any
home games during the tournament this year but you can visit the
     Maple Leaf Gardens.

I hope this information is helpful to all of you attending this
year. Look me up and say hello. I will be with the California
Rays (Senior B or C division? not sure)

Subject: Dallas Tournament?? (Part 2)
Message-ID:

I have rec'd a few requests for further info on Womens/Girls Hockey tourneys
in Dallas. I hope the following will help.

Girls: I am not real familiar with the girls program @ StarCenter but I do
know that there are two teams (Midget & PeeWee). They are composed of girls
in the juniors program most of whom also play on a "boys" house or travel
team. Two years ago, they wanted to practice for this a Colorado tournament
and a women's team was born (BRIEFLY). There was only a Midget team then.
There are several juniors tournaments here throughout the year. If there is
enough interest, I'm sure a girls division would be a welcome addition to
these tourneys.

Women: At this time Dallas women are still in a learning phase, except those
luckey few who discovered hockey as girls. (Most of these are transplants
from up north) Most of the women play in senior rec leagues with the men.
I have been told that a minimum of four womens teams would be needed for a
womens division in the senior tournaments. I'm not sure if this would
include midgets teams. Boys midget teams have been allowed to enter the
senior tourneys in the past as long as parental consent forms were signed
for each player under 18.

Tournaments: A Girls/Womens Tournament is still in the planning phases. It
is dependent upon having enough interested teams. When I spoke with the
directors @ StarCenter, they were thinking of late 1997 or early 1998.

Single Games: All we need is enough time to schedule the ice, refs, etc and
to get everyone together. There is also other rinks in town where we can
pull players, ice time, etc. If I have to, I will rent the ice personally
and talk with the refs association to get them for the game!!

I hope this helps!!!

Sorry for the repeat but in Part 2 I mentioned the following:
---
Boys midget teams have been allowed to enter the senior tourneys in the past
as long as parental consent forms were signed for each player under 18.
---
I thought about this some more. I remembered that these were teams from the
junior programs @ StarCenter and there were some injuries, so I am not sure
if midget teams will be allowed to enter in any future senior tournaments.
However, if we are a team short for a womens division, I'm sure we can
convince the directors to let them play. But you have to promise not to
beat up on the women too much!!
