I just wanted to let everyone know what a great time we had at the CT Polar
Bears Tournament. This was our first year attending (actually our first
year with a travel rep team) and we thought is was a great opportunity to
play some top-notch hockey and to get some incredible exposure to college
coaches. I can't believe how many coaches were able to talk with about our
players and our developing program. We came away batting 500 in the Midget
"I" level which we were very excited about.

If anyone ever was thinking about attending this tournament I highly
recommend it! It was worth the long flight from Seattle (where we almost
got snowed in.... and out of).

On a personal note, it was great to meet some of you on the list and to
talk face to face. I hope to see you again sometime again.

I have alot of the "bases" covered on this issue. I'm a female player in an
all male adult league and also a Head Coach for a youth team where I have 3
girls playing, one of which is my daughter. I'm the first female Coach in
the league's history which I think spans about 35 years. So far the girls I
coach have not run into any problems as a matter of fact one of them
(originally from Vermont) is my leading scorer, having thus far scored in
every single game she's played. It may have alot to do with their age, being
Mites, they are only 7 and 8 and I wouldn't be surprised to encounter some
sexism as they grow up through the ranks. Being a Mite Coach and skating on
the ice with them during games, I have had to tone down my delight as I watch
this little girl score and score and score! (You know that inside, I'm just
about ready to burst with pride!). As for myself, in my own league, it is
supposed to be a non-checking league with contact, but really it's a checking
league as long as no one charges or boards from behind. My experience has
been very positive in the years I have exclusively played with and against
men. Yes, there is the occassional "Egg Head" out there but few and far
between. The vast majority of the men I've encountered have not just
"tolerated" me, they have really pulled for me! I have received exclusive
instruction and encouragement from guys who have played everywhere from the
IHL to European Leagues. I've had former great College players and former
Pros give up their time to work out with me and help me succeed in what is
often a difficult task (playing with men in the highest level of play in our
city and doing it at 4'11" 97 lbs.) So far there are only 3 or 4 of us in
our City, but hopefully our ranks will grow, which is one of the reasons I
got involved with coaching. Hopefully, someday, we will have enough girls
participating that I can Head Coach the city's (Cincinnati) first Girls team!
I've never had and may never have the experience of playing with and against
my peers, but hopefully my daughter will some day.

I am interested in your coaching "career". You say that you are the first
female coach in the league's history. What is the name of the league? Is
it a boys league? What are the ages of the players? Are they all Mites
or are there different age groups in the league? I am writing a book
about women's hockey and am including a section on coaching and what
opportunities are available. How did you get this coaching job? Have
you run into difficulty with parents/officials/other coaches because you
are a female? Any information/your thoughts you could give me on this
would be greatly appreciated. Also - could I use your name? (It wasn't
printed on the message) Thanks.

Message-ID:

Hi,

My name is Meg (email@hidden) and I am with a womens 'C' team called the
Phantoms. We used to be called the Ice Cats, but went through some changes.
We are based out of Crystal Lake (NW suburb of Chicago) and are looking for
other womens teams to play. We have a regular Sun at 9:30 ice slot or are
open to some travel. I apologize to those who recognize me from previous
posts related to game requests and have replied in the past, but nothing ever
materialized from our side. Our team went through a period of stagnation
where we didn't have enough players to play any games, but we are growing now
and I WILL reply to any interested teams that would like to play.
Please reply to me at my email, again it's email@hidden or feel free to call
me at 847 741 8881. Also, anyone interested in playing for our team, come on
out...Sun nights at 9:30 Crystal Ice House.

The University of New Hampshire continues it's winning streak as this
past Saturday they beat Boston College 10-1 and on Sunday
they beat Dartmouth 4-3.

This upcoming weekend is a big one as UNH hosts Brown and Providence
College, it should prove to be two great games.

Meg,

Oh wow, I'm looking for teams to play too! I realize there's quite a lot of
miles between NYC and Chicago, and maybe I'm ambitious beyond my
capabilities, but if we were organized, we could plan a tour for next
season. Any interest in visiting the Big Apple? If there are other womens
teams in your area, it would be nice to get in a few games so the fun
outweighs the expenses. I could put you in touch with a few teams here, or
try to schedule games for you. We call ourselves a B-team, but I've
discovered that means very different things in different parts. In NYC we
are B, in NY state we are C, in Boston we are D, in Canada we don't even
play hockey as far as they are concerned. Most of us are in our first or
second year of playing. I think that's a better portrait.

We have a range of skill on our team, as well as a range of financial
means. We may not be able to foot the bill for a tour, I'd have to do some
pitching. But why not try?

Talk to you later, I hope.
