Thanks so much for helping out with the survey! I'm hoping that our work will
pay off and that we can offer our business plan to someone like CCM or Bauer.
It's also comforting to know that I'm not the only one who has trouble fitting
equipment. I'm learning a lot!
Thanks again,

About club vs. varsity -
It is good for schools that want to go to varsity to show support from the
student body - but is varsity status really want 'the students' want right
now? What does varsity status for a women's ice hockey team give you? For
students at the school - none or very few of them will be on the team if
(when) it goes varsity - at most 20 students can be on a team, and most
varsity programs have hockey players that are recruited from the east coast,
or canada and brought to the university. When you have a club team - even if
it is made up of only students at least all the students are from the
university...and if you include staff and faculty on the club team it is much
more a university team. Club teams also are student run organizations -
giving women opportunities to be leaders and to develop organizational
skills. If you have a varsity program, you will have someone - again not a
student who runs the program - university administrators, etc. So, as ice
hockey grows in the midwest, it is important for schools to really figure out
what they are trying to do - involve those who are a part of the university
community and help grow the sport, and also participate in the games or
develop a varsity program that will be an exclusive organization with
tryouts, recruiting and not much if any involvement from the people who were
instrumental in generating the interest in the first place.
I helped coach a team in the mid-west that was just introducing hockey to
the community and for those that came to the team no knowing how to skate,
and now are skating and playing the game - what sweet satisfaction. Also,
the numbers of students, faculty, grad students, etc. that were exposed to
the sport and came back each quarter, certainly is part of the grass root
reasons that ice hockey is growing in parts of the US, other than the east
coast. At one point we had over 60 women as members of the club. Moving to
varsity too fast could be detrimental to this growth.
I also played ice hockey in college at the varsity level, so I have a good
understanding of the wonderful experience this can be, but if you have only
varsity at a school, without the club, you cut out many people from the
enjoyment and ability to experience this sport.

Hey all..
For those of you on the list that are going to the Las Vegas Tournament
next week, I thought it would be kinda neat if we all met up and introduced
ourselves once there.
Our team is the Thunder Bay Blades from Ontario, Canada. We are in the A
division with the Denver Bandits and the Southern California Rays. We wear
the San Jose 'away' colours, teal with white. I understand that most of
the women's teams are staying at the Santa Fe Hotel, we are staying at the
Holiday Inn Casino Boardwalk, but perhaps we could all meet for
"refreshments" in the closest lounge to the arena after a game.
Some of the team (myself included) are starting this hockey vacation early
and leaving Saturday. So, I will be available via email until Friday and
after that we will see you on the ice.

Please help me understand what the "petition" is really for.
I have seen refence to the "Women's National Championship" and to the "1997
Women's World Championship" in this request for support.
I would be happy to support both to be televised, ofcoarse, but I think
there is some confusion out there. I know the WWHC is in March and April in
KITCHENER CANADA, and I believe the US Nationals is also in April. So which
one are all you people petitioning to see televised???
I have already joined the petition list, and I truly hope that some sports
network will pick up one or the other...maybe both? I have also e-mailed
all the TV networks that have a web page. I hope everyone else has too.

I would like to point out that more than 20 players can be on a varsity
team, they just don't all get to play in every game. At the University of
New Hampshire, last year's national champions, we have 30 players on the
team. We can only dress 20 or 21 for games. Those players rotate a lot
depending on who we are playing. Several of our players are also
walk-ons that are still learning the fundamentals of the game. If these
players can make it here, then I know that other programs could stand to
go varsity. Besides, it would be nice to expand the league so we can
have a real NCAA tournament!

Subject: Update on Cincy's Team
Message-ID:
Just thought I'd write a few lines about the new team we're forming in
Cincinnati and how my 1st experience playing with women is coming. I am
happy to say that I am finding the competition and skill level with the women
basically the same as with the guys! I've always wonderded in the back of my
mind what it would be like if I ever got the chance. I do think I'm going to
have to change my "game" slightly after all this time. My "game" has
basically consisted of my Center or L.W. skating the puck in and me "busting
tail" to get right in there behind them and rush the net! Now, because I'm
on a much more even playing field speed wise, it might even be ME who skates
the puck in! Hallalujah! I've always done well with the guys, but there was
no way I was ever the "SuperStar" on the team, I've had a role to fill and
succeeded because I understood that and filled it well. I'm finding women
just as competitive to play against but in some different ways. The women
see to be a little quicker in their stick handling and because of their
smaller bodies they are definately more agile. There seems to be almost a
gentle kind of scrappiness in our play (if that even makes sense!). I had
the strangest experience last night at our practice with a elite midget
player who has joined our ranks. She plays defense and we we're scrimmaging
and I was in my usual office in front of the net and all of sudden she just
sort of "swooped" me out of there. It was like I was just moved
telepathically five feet from the spot I was in without even being aware of
it! No pushing, shoving, just this strange in control gentle glide. She was
every bit as effective as any male Defencemen I've ever encountered and I've
encountered 100's! Sure am glad she's playing for us! Hope I'm not boring
everybody, I'm just excited with this new chapter in "My Hockey Life" which
is one at times, I didn't think would ever happen. I know there has to be
more women on this list who were in my position who have NEVER played with
women only with guys, my advice is - If you get the chance, give it a try!
Your probably going to like it. And your going to be really surprised at
the level of skill and competition. The guys do not have the market cornered
on everything! I will still continue to play with the Men's team that I've
always played with, (I got 13 "brothers" there that I adore!) but I am
looking forward to my Women's team getting ready and eventually travelling to
play other Women's teams.

Hi Jennifer
First thing first put a add in your local news
paper to see just how much interest and
support you can get to start a team. Just
ask interested people to give you a call and
from there you can decide if you have the
players to put togeather a team. Don't
advertise for age, you can ask that question
on the phone, after all you never know you
might get more then expected.

It is still an unfair advantage to the other teams to include staff that may
have been playing all their lives -- or even on a varsity college team. Yes,
it is a club, so there should be no ringers... those who are so much better
should be our age, and on a varsity team.

Does the red line "exist" at any level of women's hockey? I know
that it does not at the college level. However, we have had some refs of
late that have been using it for icing calls. This is during girls 12 and
under games.
BTW --> We play under USA Hockey rules, but I could find no mention of it

at the amateur level here in the SF
bay area (ncwhl and the now defunct
lady polars league) we used to use
the red line for icing....if it was
fired down the ice from a defensive
zone and went over the opposite goal
line, it was automatic icing (they didn't
wait for a player to pick it up).
i have known some refs to blow the play
before the puck has crossed the line
when it's patently obvious that it's
going to cross the line (usually aided
by goalie with one arm in the air).

never seen it used in the States however.

Last time I played in Ontario, last Easter weekend, the two line pass rule
was in effect. Also, the last time I played on a team in Ontario (senior
rec 1994/1995) each game was played with the two line pass rule. Took
some getting used to when I moved to the States that I could go beyond red
line and accept a pass from my defensive zone - mind you, I would *never*
go that far froward and leave my defensive zone ('course that could be
because I am predominantly playing defense now!).
