Age: 25
State/Province: New York USA
Length of time playing: 1 1/4 years
Do you play with:
( )All women
(X)Mostly men
( )Mixed
If the equipment were available, would you prefer to purchase/use women's
equipment?
(X )Yes
( )No
( )No opinion
Would you pay more for equipment made for women if the fit/comfort were better
than comparable men's equipment?
( )Yes
(X )No
( )It would depend. Comments:
Do you currently have or wear any equipment designed for women?
( )Yes
(X )No
If so, what do you like or dislike about your women's equipment:
Which pieces of equipment would you most like to see designed for women. Please
rank the following equipment on a scale of 1-9, 1 being most important:
(1 )gloves
(7 )pants
(3 )skates
(2 )shin pads
(6 )elbow pads
(5 )shoulder pads/chest protector
(8 )sticks
(4 )helmet
( )other:
For the three items you identified as most important in the previous question,
how would you modify or change existing men's equipment in order to create a
better product for a woman:
Most important piece of equipment:
I would change: I would make top quality (protection-wise) gloves in small
sizes for women. I have a hard time finding appropriately padded gloves in a
small size.
Second most important piece of equipment:
I would change: The shin guards would be contoured more towards the way women's
legs are made - maybe have flaps that wrap completely around the back of the
calf.
Third most important piece of equipment:
I would change: I would make top of the line skates in smaller widths. Most
women's feet aren't as wide as men's or boy's.
Do you play:
(X )ice hockey
( )roller hockey
( )both
Do you use the same equipment for ice and roller hockey?
( )Yes
( )No
Is the color of the equipment a buying consideration?
( )Yes
(X )No
Anything you would like to add? Additional comments:
Thank you for your time!

Subject: OWIAA Championship Results
Message-ID:
Congratulations to the York University Yeowomen for defeating the
favoured University of Toronto Varsity Blues in double-overtime to
claim the 1997 OWIAA Championship. The Blues were 13-0-2 this season
and have won the OWIAA title in 14 of the previous 18 seasons, so
needless to say, York's victory was quite an upset. York's assistant
coach was quoted by the Toronto Sun as saying, "I can't remember the
last time York defeated Toronto."
After 3 periods of play, the game was tied at one, on goals by Laura
Schuler of Toronto and Stephanie Slade of York. The game then went
into a 10 minute non-sudden death overtime period. Jayna Hefford of
Toronto scored to give her team a temporary lead, until Sari Krooks
replied for York to tie the game at two. The game then went into sudden
death overtime, with Shanley White scoring the game winner for York.
The OWIAA Championship is the final competiton for the women's
university league in Ontario. It was held at Wilfred Laurier
University this year. Of the six teams in the league, four qualified
for this final-four championship. The seedings of the teams in the
OWIAA and game results for the tournament are shown below.
Seedings:
1 University of Toronto
2 York University
3 Wilfred Laurier University
4 University of Guelph
----
5 Queen's University
6 Windsor University
Game Results:
Saturday, February 15th
York University 2 vs Wilfred Laurier University 1 (3 OT)
University of Toronto 4 vs University of Guelph 1
Sunday, February 16th
York University 3 vs University of Toronto 2 (2 OT)

Just thought I'd give you all an update of what's happening here in B.C.
The Britania Blues and the Lightning are currently involved in a best of 5
playoff series. The winner of the series, I believe, will represent B.C. in
the 1997 Esso Nationals in Richmond. The Blues were the B.C. rep last year.
The Lightning won the first game Saturday Night by a score of 1-0. The next
two games are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday nights.
I also found out that the Lightning have apparently carded Danielle Dube,
currently the #1 ranked female goaltender in Canada. She did not dress for
the first game, but a Lightning player told me that she is expected to start
Wednesday night.

currently working on an article for the new magazine WOMEN'S HOCKEY about
other female referees and their experiences as such.
If you're a referee and a woman and you'd be willing to share your opinions
and stories with me for possible inclusion in the article, please drop me a

Subject: "regulating" club membership
Message-ID:
Here is my 2 cents on the issue of "allowing" women to participate in
university ice hockey clubs....from a midwestern university club perspective...
As a general guiding principle we should, at multiple levels, be encouraging
greater opportunities for girls and women to participate in ice hockey
programs which are member-controlled.
If the interest is too great for a club program to handle, then the members
need to organize to expand the program or expand other opportunities. Expand
the club program, expand the intramural program, expand the opportunities
for women's pick-up hockey, expand the community hockey programs...expanding
opportunities of course will be met with resistance from rink managers,
university club administrators, and athletic dept. administrators.(what's
new?) However, I don't think we can put all our eggs in one "varsity-status"
basket and expect that girls and women's ice hockey in the Midwest to
develop and flourish.
Clearly boys and men receive the lions share of university resources when it
comes to recreation and athletics --particularly ice hockey. The fact that
a club program can't handle the demand should be a clear message to our
university recreational administrators they need to support more women's ice
hockey opportunities. Turning away interested women who are clearly members
of the university community (graduate students, faculty, staff, domestic
partners) undermines our interests to promote women's ice hockey. As women
we have been historically told "your not allowed." Why should be start
telling each other sorry your "not allowed"?
my 2 cents...

Based on your opinion in your post, is that how the OSU women's club hockey
is set up?
The WMU hockey club team is open to all interested women for two years.
After the two years, we will only allow students registered at WMU on the
club team. We have this rule so students at WMU will not get cut because of
a non-student, considering it is a college competition sport.
We do currently have intramural women's hockey available, but from lack of
interest, most always gets "phased" out for that semester. As far as the
community is concerned, there are a couple of women hockey teams that compete
at aanother local ice areana.
I was just curious on how the OSU program is set up - since you did just
"spank" WMU in competition this past weekend. (making it an even 1-1 record
between OSU and WMU.) Next time! :)

Does this mean that you require women to try out
for your team? College clubs should have as people
as are interested in playing, no matter what the level.
It is not necessary to have only one team. Several
universities have 3 levels of club teams, A, B and C.
