Hello hockey enthusiasts!

For anyone who is interested and registered with USA Hockey, the
University of Illinois Women's Hockey Club has ice time at 11pm on Friday
Feb. 7 at Jerry's Ice House in downtown Chicago. The team we tried to
set up cancelled, and we don't want to waste this ice time. Only $5
admission. But, we are setting a limit on the number of players, so get
there early. FYI: we're a B-level team, and there might be a referee.

Sorry this is so short notice!

I had a short conversation with Rosann from MSU regarding MSU's club policy
of only allowing students to play on their team. She said it was alright to
bring the topic out for discussion.

What I wanted to know is how does everyone feel about the general rules about
club sports allowing any student, faculty, staff or spouse to play college
club sports?

The following is Rosann's personal opinion:
>At MSU we have so many people interested in playing hockey that we had to
>create two teams. This means that if we were to allow non-students places
on
>the team we would have to turn down students at MSU. We are very serious
>about our teams and hope to see women's hockey granted varsity status (I
hope
>the club continues after this as well.) There are other oppurtunities for
>women in the area to play hockey, but there will never be another
oppurtunity
>for the girls on our team to wear an MSU jersey while theu attend the
>university.
>
>Feel free to share my opinion. This opinion may not be the opinion of my
>school/teamates.

The second following is my opinion:
It kind of hinders other women from getting into the sport.
>> Most colleges have a general rule that all club sports are open
>> to students, faculty, staff and spouses. I assume that MSU
>> also does. With varsity teams already having these kinds of rules,
>> it is not necessary to have them as a club. I feel that clubs
>> should be more flexible and less regulated.
>>
>> By the way, I always tell university clubs that should their
school
>> get a varsity team approved, they should still also maintain a
second
>> team at the club level, just as many men's teams do. This allows
>> more opportunities for women to play hockey.

For those of you interested in the ice-time at 11pm on the 7th (today) from
the U. of Illinios:

>THe rink is called Johnny's Icehouse. It is on the Northeast corner of Madison
>Ave and Loomis Ave. There is street parking on Madison, Loomis, and Jackson
>(runs on the back side of the rink parallel to Madison).
>
>Take I57 North into Chicago. At some point I57 ends and turns into I90/94 West
>to Chicago. The road is really going north but it is called west. When I57
>ends you won't notice any difference in the road except that two lanes head to
>the right which goes to I94 east to Indiana. The left lanes continue on into
>the city which is automatically I94 west. When you get all the way downtown,
>Madison street will come up as an exit. It will be shortly past Congress
>Parkway exit. Turn left on Madison (West) and continue to Loomis. It's only a
>few blocks (maybe 5 or 6). The rink will be on your right and it looks like
>large light colored tiles on the building front. If you run into the United
>Center then you've gone too far by a bout 3 or 4 blocks.

Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone who's sent me information
about their hockey teams. I apologize for not responding to each of you
individually, but as you can probably imagine, I'm up-to-my-elbows in
great stories about women's hockey. It's really wonderful.

Anyway, keep the info coming ... the very last day I can add new info to
the Feb. 17 issue is Thursday, Feb. 13. Anything I get after that, I'll
save for future issues.

Thanks, again.
