Subject: Thoughts about the Game

USA defeats Canada 3 - 0 to win the 3 Nations Cup Tourney and handing
Canada it's first loss ever in the finals of any major international
tournament. Managed to catch most of the Team USA vs Team Canada game,
although TSN pre-empted the first 4 minutes of the game due to an NFL game.

Full credit to Team USA for their win. They forechecked well, and really
shut down Canada's attack (or lack thereof..). Their play was particularly
impressive as they were missing their top forward, Cammi Granato, and
arguably top defenceman in Tara Mounsey, and they still managed to dominate
Canada in every facet of the game.

US Goaltender DeCosta played a pretty solid game, making the saves she
should have made, and controlling/covering the puck well. Power play
looked decent getting some great puck movement around the perimeter, but
they definitely need to shoot more. Penalty kill was excellent, with an
aggressive box, and good pressure on the puck. Offensively, Ulion chiped
in with two goals (almost got a natural hat trick), and Mlezcko got the
other one showing nice hands on a nifty tip-in off a 2 on 1.

Canada did not show up for this game, and were particularly dominated in
the 2nd period where they only managed to muster 4 shots on net. They just
didn't seem to have any jump, and seemed to be pre-occupied with the
off-ice situations that have come to light. (see
http://www.canoe.ca/SlamNaganoHockeyWomen/dec21_buffery.html)

I was really miffed that Team Canada didn't call a time out in the second
period when they were down 1-0, and Team USA was starting to really take it
to them. Anyone could tell it was only a matter of time before Team USA
would pot a couple more goals in, and they did. I was also surprised that
they didn't shortern their bench a lot sooner than they did.

Defensively, Team Canada was pretty brutal. They sorely missed defensive
stalwart Judy Diduck's calming presence, and were often scrambling around
in the defensive zone and getting caught up ice on pinches. The only
defenceman that had anywhere near a respectable game was Geraldine Heaney.

Offensively, Team Canada lacked any offensive punch at all. Their supposed
big guns were no shows today.. and when your best players aren't your best
players, you're not going to win many games. They look like a team that is
sorely missing what a player like Angela James brings to that team.

The only thing that was really a bright spot for Canada is the fact that
Rheaume played pretty solid. Made a couple of really big saves. Of the 3
goals, you probably could have only faulted her on one (the one where she
played the puck up the middle and it was picked off), and possibly another
where she let out a big rebound right in front of the net, although that
goal was due more to the Canadian defencemen not being able to contain
USA's forwards driving to the net.

I also thought that Canada really wasn't passing the puck all that well. A
lot of weak d to d passes that were just asking to be picked off, and they
always seemed to want to carry the puck out of their defensive zone and
through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone, go coast-to-coast
instead of headmanning that puck. That might have something to do with
Team USA's 1-4/1-2-2 forecheck.

The reffing was decent. She missed some blatant stuff (a check from behind
by a Canadian player on an American player, I thought anyways) and called
some really "soft" penalties on both sides, but altogether I thought did a
consistent job, which is all you can ask. She made a great call, in
conferring with her linsmen, and then disallowing Jayna Hefford's goal that
was kicked in with a distinct kicking motion.

me DIRECTLY on TUESDAY. By then I should know how much the mailing would
cost - the shirts are $15 and can take orders after TUESDAY. They only come
in two sizes XLarge and Medium. E-mail: email@hidden

so Whitten, Leary and O'Sullivan got cut. That seems a little weird to me, I
thought Leary was one of the best defenseman/women/person (I don't know which
one would be right, since they don't mind being called defensemen, but
somebody might say something if I put that) that USA had. And O' Sullivan, I
thought she was good too. I think Whitten is good, and I personally would have
kept her because of her experience ( I can never spell that right) but I guess
if they want the gold, they'd choose they goalie with the better records. I'm
surprised about their cuts because I thought the 3 of them were pretty good.
Since I usually only know of the bigger names I assume that they're good I
guess. So somebody who actually knows more about these players, could you tell
me if I'm just completely wrong, and they aren't very good at all. I get the
Womens Hockey magazine, but that doesn't give me all of the information I need
to know if a player is good. So just tell me if I'm completly wrong. Gotta go,
here from all of you later.

Hi all!

I am going to visit my sister in Littleton, CO for a week over Christmas.
Is there anyone out there who can advise me on pickup hockey (men, women, mix,
don't care) in the Denver area, or who could invite me to your organized
stick time? I want to find out whether I should bring my equipment (or just
my skates, for public skating).

Thanks,

C.L.
