This isn't correct. That rumor was runnign around all summer around the
RHI, since she was in Sacramento with Gerry, but it's not true.

Subject: Angela James & Stats

Just to add a few facts to the debate about Angela James...

Here are the stats for Angela James in the Central Ontario Women's Hockey
League, from 1992 to 1997. I don't have stats available for 1994-95 yet.
NB: For complete stats, check out
    http://www.dgp.toronto/edu/people/vv1/COWHL.html

Legend: # = Player Number Pos= Position S = Shot GP = Games Played G = Goals
A = Assists PTS= Total Points PP = Power Play Points

Since some of the latest arguments supporting Angela's cut from the team
relate to her performance in the games against the USA, I decided to
compile the stats for the Team Canada forwards in the 6 games against the
USA, prior to the December 9th announcement of the final cuts. Of course, 6
games (and fewer for some players) is such a small sample space that it's
hard to draw any statistical conclusions from these stats. But it's not
clear that Angela performed far worse than most other Team Canada forwards,
if we just look at the stats below. Only five of the forwards had 3 points
or more [Angela had 1]. Players were cut that had more points than Angela
(Shewchuk with 4), and players were kept that had fewer points than Angela
(Dupuis, Goyette and St-Louis had 0 points). Basically, the stats are
inconclusive : they neither support nor contradict the decision to cut
Angela.

It's too bad that plus-minus stats are not included in the summaries...
That would give a better idea of the relative performance of the players.
But even plus-minus does not tell the whole story, it's too simplistic.
I also wish I could have seen more than one exhibition game (I was at the
one in Kitchener). It's hard to assess players without seeing them play
in more than one game, or by using scoring summaries.

Forward G A P PiM (Games played - a range indicates uncertainty
Since the game summaries do not indicate which
players were in the lineup, I've assumed that
a player was in a lineup if she got a goal, an
assist, or a penalty. I've also taken into
account the information stating which players
didn't make which trip - e.g., Goyette and
Letendre did not play in the NB games nor in the
Kitchener game. I was also at the game in
Kitchener so I remember which forwards played
                               in that particular game.)
Forward G A P PiM GP
Jayna Hefford 6+1= 7 2 4-6
Hayley Wick. 1+5= 6 8 6
Tammy Shewchuk 3+1= 4 0 4-6
Karen Nystrom 2+1= 3 2 3-4
Laura Schuler 0+3= 3 2 5-6
Kathy McCormack 1+1= 2 0 3-6
Vicki Sunohara 1+1= 2 4 4-6
Nancy Drolet 0+2= 2 4 3-5
Stacy Wilson 1+0= 1 2 2-5
Angela James 1+0= 1 4 4-6
Jennifer Botterill 0+1= 1 0 2-6
Lori Dupuis 0+0= 0 14 3-6
France St-Louis 0+0= 0 2 2-5
Danielle Goyette 0+0= 0 0 0-3
Luce Letendre 0+0= 0 0 0-3

One final note. Here are Canada's +/- at the 1997 World Championship.

The first two columns represent the true plus-minus (i.e., you get a plus
everytime you are on the ice and your team scores and your team is not
on the power-play, you get a minus everytime you are on the ice and the other
team scores and your team is not short-handed.) The F (as in for) column are
positive contributions, the A (as in against) column are for negative
contributions.

The next two columns represent the total plus-minus (i.e., you get a plus
everytime you are on the ice and your team scores, you get a minus everytime
you are on the ice and the other team scores.) Again, the F and A represent
the positive and negative contributions.

The final two columns represent the combine "true" plus minus, and the
total plus minus (i.e., column 5 is the sum of columns 1 and 2, column 6
is the sum of columns 3 and 4.)

Shots in second period:

Terrible period for Canada in every respect. Time for a Mike Keenan style
paint-peeling lecture from Shannon Miller betwee periods.

USA wins the 3 Nations Cup, a deserved victory after a totally flat
performance by Team Canada, probably their worst in recent years.

Three second period goals (Ulion x2, Milezco) did the trick. Very good
defensive play by USA prevented Canada from getting back into it in the
third. One Canadian goal was justifiably disallowed (kicked in) but the
scoreline was about right on the day :(

Time for some reconsiderations before Nagano, perhaps. TSN announced that
the next Canada/USA game (from GM Place, Vancouver as a part of the NHL All
Star Game weekend) will be shown live. Good news.

Just read in the paper that Erin Whitten, Kelly O'Leary, and Stephanie
O'Sullivan have been cut from Team USA.
