Subject: New Women's Hockey Book and more on Angela James

Just to let you all know, I've put up a 1-page web site for Too Many Men on
the Ice: Women's Hockey in North America with a scan of the cover, and
more information on the book. The URL is:
http://home.onestop.net/hockey/toomany.html

Here's the blurb on the back cover of the book:

Swift skating. Precision passing. Aggressive forechecking. Pinpoint
shooting. Spectacular goaltending. It's women's hockey: exciting,
impassioned, pure.

For more than 100 years, women have been skilled and determined hockey
players, motivated by a passion for the game that has enabled them to
overcome many obstacles. Too Many Men on the Ice uncovers this rich history
and relates it to the remarkable resurgence in women's hockey today.
Authors Julie Stevens and Joanna Avery examine all levels of women's hockey
in Canada and the united States from the growth of the grassroots game to
the training of elite players. They document the formation of Canadian and
American National Teams, and the preparations for the sport's debut at the
1998 Olympic games in Nagano. In-depth interviews with prominent players
round out the book, providing fascinating personal perspectives on women's
hockey.

Here are the accounts of girls playing with boys, and girls playing on
all-girls teams; here are the stores of the handful of women who play men's
professional hockey and the talented women who are part of National Teams.
And here are the major debates: Should girls play with boys? Is the women's
game different from the men's? Are there advantages for women playing with,
and against, other women? And how can we encourage and promte the
increasingly popular sport of women's hockey in North American and around
the world?

Too Many Men on the Ice is both a chronicle and a celebration. It reveals
that although women come to hockey in a variety of ways, they share a
profound love for the game and a inextinguishable drive to excel. Too many
men on the ice? Not anymore. The women have arrived.

That is Urszula May. She plays ice hockey for the University of Toronto
Varsity Blues. She played roller hockey for the Toronto Tornado in 1996,
and for the Toronto Mission-Kuzak Hurricane in 1997. There is a
picture of her at the top of my women's roller hockey web page at:

Congratulations to Team Canada for coming from 4-1 down to defeat Team USA
5-4 (including killing off an extended period of 5 on 3 when 4-3 down).
Sounded like fair commentary on Lifetime (webcast only, not televised in
Canada).

Well, I thought the coverage of the game in Burlington VT was really well
done. The interviews were interesting and handled nicely, I thought. The
features between periods and the interest spots during the game were also
very cool. How about that Nike commercial with the poem to Cammi Granato?
Was that not cool?
And a very exciting and well-played game to boot. The US team clearly
looked tired and just had some real difficulty at times with getting pinned
in their own end leading to an eventual defensive breakdown. Erin
Whitten's acrobatics in the crease were pretty remarkable although she had
problems closing the 5-hole on a couple of goals on shots that looked like
they could have been stopped. It will be interesting to see if Ben Smith
goes for her experience or the remarkable young talent of Sarah DeCosta.
Who else do you think will not make the cut that is expected this weekend
for the US team?

Subject: an opinion on womens hockey

I'm in this online hockey club thing that sends out a newsletter thing. I
decided to write this article for it. Its about the womens game. I just
thought you guys might want to read it, sure I could have put it together a
little better but I didn't spend much time on it.
And about the game tonight, it was great, the best hockey I've ever seen.
which you'll soon read. I wanted USA to win, but hey I won't complain, I got
to see the game didn't I? I was pretty pshyced while watching it, USA scored
and I just started yelling, and I made my puppy wave his paw around. I never
get like that for an NHL game or even my highschool football or basket ball
games. I'm glad to have seen, the players I have dreamed about seeing play.
The only thing was, during one of the commercials, I said something about how
this game was like important to me or something like that. and then my dad
said "you'll never be in the olympics" I pretty much know I won't since I'm
15 and only ice skated once, but I mean to have a parent say something like
that is just a major self confidence dropper ( I can't think of the right
word) I can't say I won't be in the olympics, roller hockey is already a
junior olympic sport, maybe it will soon be a regular olympic sport. Well, I'm
getting tired of typing, and I'm sure some of you are probably getting tired
of reading about my not being able to play and how I think that womens hockey
deserves more....yadda yadda yadda. So I will quit writing for the night. Oh
wait, if anyboyd knows about ticket prices for the womens game in Colorado
springs on the 28th of january, could you please tell me about that. Thanks
for your time.
We got Next, Not only in Basketball, but Hockey Too
Jennie Hawks

I watched my very first women's hockey game tonight, December 17th, 1997.
For the first time I saw the players I had only heard of or seen pictures of.
Team USA faced off agaisnt Team Canada in the Three Nations Cup, the two best
women teams in the world. They are major rivals, for the past four years they
have played each other in the final game of the World Cup. USA losing
everytime.
Some people think that hockey is a man's game, and they tell us to get off
the ice, not tonight. Tonight women's hockey and Lifetime made history, the
first ever womens hockey game nationally broadcasted. Team USA and Lousiville
Hockey's slogan is "Don't tell me what I can't do." Women are definitly
stepping up in the world.
Now on to the hockey part. The game was great no it was awesome, in fact
it was the best game I've ever seen. I know lots of people won't agree with me
on the next couple of things I say. The game was good, one thing, skill the
game was about 95% skill, and at the most 5% fighting. (This is the part
you'll disagree with) I don't think fighting is a part of the game, a lot of
people do, but to me its a waste of time. In NHL games or college games, when
they fight I turn away, its not hockey to me. That's what I liked about the
womens game, no fighting, a couple of times they did start in with it, but
their teammates and the refs were there before anything could happen. And both
players were sent to the box. The game was more hockey, skating around with
the puck, using true skill to play the game. Unlike some cases where the game
is played with more size and force.
Some other things that made the game great were the plays. They made a lot
of nice passes. Between the legs, banked off the boards, it was nice passing,
a lot better than I've seen lately. All 9 goals scored were nice goals, a
couple one-timers for Team USA, and a couple 5-holes for Team Canada. There
was also a nice top shelf. Overall great hockey.
Another thing I noticed was the attitude of the players, it seemed so much
better than the players of the games I've watched. I don't know why, they just
seemed be more into the game. Maybe because they aren't payed to play, I
wouldn't really know. All I can say is it was a great game, better than any
NHL game I've seen. I know people will disagree with me but there will always
be someone to disagree with everything.
Canada ended up winning the game. It was tied at four until there was like
3 or 4 minutes left in the game. Canada scored the first goal, through Erin
Whitten's five-hole. Ulion scored the next one for USA, it was a nice goal.
USA scored twice in the 2nd period, soon followed by a goal for Canada making
it 3-4. Then Canada tied it early in the 3rd. With 3 minutes left they scored,
a top shelf goal. Whitten made a lot of good saves that last period. I was
kind of disapointed that we lost, but I got to see my first women's hockey
game, one I'll never forget.
So for anybody that thinks that hockey is a man's game, hopefully you'll
soon think differently. It's the 90's and we're stepping up, and we're not
getting off the ice.
And as for figure skating, no thanks, I bet that most women hockey players
would gladly wear the T-shirt that I am wearing at this moment. It says "I'd
rather have played hockey and lost than have figure skated in the olympics and
have won the gold medal." The women's game is slightly different, with no
body checking, this gives some people the idea that women can't take body
checks. The rule isn't that way for that reason, its for the game, the skill,
to keep hockey the way it should be.
If you notice fighting isn't a big part in any other major sport, so why is it
a part of hockey?
If you like hockey for the game, you'd like the women's game. Skill and
the passion to play is what the women's game is. Not money, force, size, or
whatever the other reasons. I love the game for the game, not to smush or
punch some other person, but to skate around with the puck or ball.
I can't make you watch (or tape since it'll be on in the middle of the
night) the olympic game that CBS will show. But I definitly suggest it. I know
I'll watch it. Its good hockey to watch, and its not slow either, its pretty
fast actually. Women are going to play, no matter what, and for those people
that don't like, I guess thats too bad.

I certainly hope not. For one thing, how many other players were cut from the
team, and are formal investigations second-guessing the coaches being
instituted on THEIR cuts? For another, it isn't as if there's been the type
of off-the-record talk from the other players to the effect that "Angela got
screwed." Nor, with France St.-Louis still on the team, can James claim
"ageism," as if there was anything bizarre about stars in their thirties with

Sorry you had to hear your Dad say something like that! Try not to pay any
attention to it although I know that's hard! Let me say this, I am an OLD
Hockey Player (35) and I'M NOT going to the Olympics ever either, BUT Hockey
has still been the best experience of my life and continues to be! I play for
2 Men's teams and 1 Women's travel team and I coach and for every 10% of
effort I've put into hockey it seems like I get 100% back. One of my best
girlfriends is also an OLD Hockey Player (43) and SHE went to some of the
Olympic Try-outs and had the BEST TIME! She pretty much knew going in that
she wouldn't make it, but she went for the experience and it was well worth it
for her. Next time Dad says stuff like that, just roll your eyes at him!

I share your opinion on last nights game, it was truly awesome. Had I just

Sorry about that, I got "Happy Finger" and accidently sent the mail before I
was finished! Anyway, like I said, if I had just been flipping through
channels, I would have SWORE I had tuned in a upper division Men's college
game! One of the things that stood out to me was the puck handling,
especially the passing game. Very, very highly skilled. The only thing I
don't really understand is why they just don't call it "checking" I teach my
kids the same kind of contact and it is definately "checking" and for the most
part, what I saw last night was alot of clean checking which is fine, it's
part of the game. I just don't understand the hesitancy to call it what it
is.

I really wish they would broadcast alot of the women's hockey in the Olympics,
I think it would definately be of interest to the hockey world and the public
in general as it was a good, highly skilled game and didn't even matter that
women were behind those masks.

I heard this quote somewhere, and I think it is great:

"The only reason figure skating is considered a sport is because it takes
place on an ICE HOCKEY rink!!."

And a teammate of mine (former figure skater) said "It is a million times more
fun to be a mediocre hockey player than a mediocre figure skater."

 A couple of comments (IMHO):

First, Congrats to Canada's team - well played in all three periods. USA looked
tired in the third. Erin let a couple of "soft" goals and didn't get needed
help.
Erin Whitten is still my first pick for USA goalie - she can see the team thru
the Olympics.

The refs didn't call what IMO was interference by the players - many times
the attacking player would hold the opposition instead of attemping to
control the puck.

Also - What's with the USA coaching - with a long 3 on 5 why are the points
doing passing drills - they should include the wings and get the puck moving
down low and across to the high slot. And the final face-off lacked a set-up
to fire on-net (like what they did during the 3 on 5)!

Overall, the game was harder hitting than I expected (I coach girls midget)
and very wide open. The coverage for TV was excellent - good play-by-play
and the color was very informative and not too novice oriented.

The Olympics games are going to be a treat to watch!!

According to the Esso Olympic Hockey booklet, CBC is showing all Canadian
women's hockey games live from Nagano. On the Esso promotion, so far Hayley
Wickenheiser, Nancy Drolet and the ever-photogenic Cassie Campbell have been
featured. This is like retreating to childhood, with NHL Power Player cards!
