The Dix Hills Rebels [Midget A & B] Girls teams are looking for
possible tournements for late March and April '98. I'm one of the
coaches for the "B" Team - we're' in the AWHL of U.S.A. Hockey.

We are located in Dix Hills, Long Island and would be interested
in any tournement in the NorthEast or Atlantic Area.

James' exclusion Messier-esque

By TOM BRENNAN -- Calgary Sun
It happens often, a one-time star being forced
to leave on terms not their own.
And sometimes, it is not pretty.
"I certainly expected some type of response like
this," nodded Shannon Miller. "I said it and I
meant it, that it would be sad if people didn't
stand up and say something. She's one of the
greatest ever. I'm not surprised she would be
upset, disappointed and hurt. I'm not surprised
some people would say 'how dare you?' "
However, for Angela James to suggest she was "set
up" or "cheated" out of a spot on the Olympic
women's hockey team is, says Miller, just flat-out
wrong.
"We were very clear with everybody, from the very
first day, that we were not using Olympic spots to
reward people for past performance," said head
coach Miller. "If we were, no question she would
be on the team. But we were not going to risk an
Olympic gold medal by doing that. We were very
up-front about it, that what happened in '94 or
'97 doesn't matter. It was the only way you could
insure all 28 players had a fair shot."
James, one of the first stars of women's hockey,
said after being cut, "I think a dog would get
better treatment," and "they did everything in
their power to keep me down."
 Miller says the opposite.
"(After) she struggled at the '97 worlds, we as a
coaching staff sat down and said 'what can we do
to help her?' And we did everything we could to
try to help her have success. We may even have
extended ourselves too much."
James did have three months to show she belonged,
Miller said.
"We were very honest with her," declared Miller.
"One month into training camp, we told her 'you're
in the grey area, here's why.' Maybe she feels she
was set up because of that. Other players wanted
to know where they stood."
Miller says that while other centres were shifted
to the wing, James stayed in the middle.
"We tried to build a line around Angela," she
insisted. James complained about not being on the
powerplay. That, says the coach, was because her
play didn't warrant it.
James claimed she was told two-and-a-half weeks
ago that she was playing well and "everything is
looking great."
"First of all, I never made those comments,"
replied Miller. "She may have had a good shift or
a good game and I may have said so. When someone
is on the bubble, sure, you have to stroke them.
But things weren't looking great, so I wouldn't
have said that. And I think when she looks in the
mirror she knows that's not the way it was."
James also said she was upset that no one from
the coaching staff had contracted her since she
was cut, and that she wasn't offered a plane
ticket home.
The former, says Miller, is deliberate to give
the players "some space" to accept the move.
And the plane ticket? They never got that far
into the discussion. "Angela got up and walked out
of the office," said Miller. "We fly everyone who
wants to go that way."
She smiled. "If I get a closing comment -- this
is like being in court -- speaking on behalf of
the coaching staff, all 28 girls were given every
opportunity, and fair and equal opportunities.
Whatever happens, I can sleep well on that."
The players aren't anxious to comment on James'
outburst.
Said team captain Stacy Wilson: "I'm sad she's
not going to be with us, and sad she can't fulfill
her (Olympic dream). She's been such a big part of
female hockey for so long, and she always will be."
