Hi Jen -

I'm from Colorado. I think there's one or two others on this list as
well.

Do you really honestly believe your program should be the only one in CA
to offer Girls Section teams that are Nationals bound? That would be
nice. If first in the State is all that matters, our program, The
Alaska Firebirds, could say we should be the only program in Alaska.
Shoot, why not the Pacific District too? Which we haven't and WONT!!!
We believe that expanding opportunities for as many Girls teams as
possible is the way to encourage growth and therefore the level of
play. It has been working great for boys for ages.

It seems that Seattle, WA has a program with a similar attitude. That
program and it's supporters in Youth Associations would like to impose a
recruiting restriction within PNAHA that will mean the possible end of
one or both of the other Girls Midget teams in WA. The rule is highly
likely to pass because voting issues in State Affiliates are basically
decided on by Youth Associations that too often view girls as a drain on
slim resources and vote accordingly. It's sad that this program doesn't
see the benefit of having the players they won't pick play on a Girls
team elsewhere in the State/District/US. Your response to Mr. Collins
indicates that the same should be true for players in his area, but for
a different reason.

In response to a young lady's question on this list, you mentioned a
rather young individual, who has obviously made a great accomplishment.
The opportunity to possibly play on Team USA. Consider another player
with similar accomplishments. She is one of two players from Alaska
also still in the running to play on team USA. With recruiting and/or
team restrictions such as those above, the Firebirds would never have
existed, and this players chances at the scholarship she earned, and her
chances to play for Team USA would have been greatly diminished. And
what of the other girls that will have memories of a National
Championship for a lifetime?

> By developing a team competitive with team
> CA in our own state you are depleting many of CAHAs goals and stunting the

Do you have anything in writing that would specify just what CAHA's
goals are? If any such document states that the only method to
accommodate growth for the Girls/Women Section in a State of well over
40 million people is by providing only two teams the opportunity to go
to Nationals, I would have to consider such a policy to be
discriminatory. I would also consider USA Hockey and the Pacific
District remiss if they protect and support such an elitist practice.
Indeed, the USA Hockey mandate is to provide growth for ALL players.

By forming new teams and seeking equal ice time for all, the Firebirds
are responsible for the fact that at least two programs, maybe three,
will offer girls hockey in Anchorage this year. How can helping Girls
hockey in Alaska grow from one team six years ago, to possibly twelve
teams or more this year, be viewed as stunting growth? How can you
honestly say that Mr. Collins forming new teams stunts growth?

I support Chuck's efforts, they provide more opportunities for Girls.
They are the results of "grass roots" efforts that are mentioned in
another response to this topic. I also support Team CA's recruiting, as
I know that at the outset, it can make the difference between having or
not having a team. With recruiting and open player movement from team
to team, later, your program could be one not unlike Youth and Girls
programs that recruit and offer opportunities nationally.

Lyle Anderson,
Alaska Firebirds

PS I would be interested to know how the rest of the list feels about
restricting team numbers as a means to make a few teams better. How
will we ever realize the pro league for women that has been discussed on
the list lately? How do you feel about playing rec hockey or having
your chance at Nationals limited until you measure up to someone else's
standards? If you don't mind that, who should set the standards?
Girls/Women programs or Youth/Senior programs? Should Youth programs,
via State Affiliate elections wherein they vote their obvious majority,
control the destiny of the Girls/Women Section?

Konstantinov, Mnatsakanov upgraded to good condition

Detroit Red Wings star defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and team
masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov were upgraded to good condition
Thursday and remain hospitalized in the rehabilitation unit at
William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. Konstantinov,
Mnatsakanov and Red Wings defenseman Slava Fetisov were involved in an
accident on June 13 after the limousine in which they were riding
crashed in Birmingham, Mich. Mnatsakanov, who came out of his coma on
July 7, is "speaking in sentences to family, friends
and medical staff, both in Russian and in English," said Beaumont
neurosurgeon Dr. Karol Zakalik. Konstantinov, who emerged from
his coma on July 23, is receiving intensive, daily
rehabilitation, designed to retrain portions of his brain. He
spends at least four hours a day in restoring balance,
coordination and motor control so that he can relearn such daily
activities as standing, walking and eating. "Mr. Konstantinov's
level of wakefulness and responsiveness has gradually improved to
the point that we now consider him fully conscious," added
Zakalik. Konstantinov recognizes and responds to family and
teammates, but still is not able to speak or write.

In a message dated 97-08-23 05:27:30 EDT, you write:

<< Hopefully, one of these stations
has the right and as "the Public" we should have SOME input on what we'd
 like to see. >>

The problem is, at least in the US, (and it was pointed out before the Worlds
last winter) networks have so many sporting events to cover that they make
their plans (primarily their BUDGETS) for coverage AS MUCH AS A YEAR IN
ADVANCE OR MORE. They also have limited airtime for certain stories, so
coverage also depends on what else is going on in a given weekend. If you
don't start hounding them early, you might as well give it up. And it's
pointless to talk to someone who doesn't have the rights for covering an
event like the Olympics, because they are at the mercy of the rights-holder
for footage, so you would want to find out who has the rights in your country
before you go emailing anyone.

It might help to badger whoever DOES have the rights to the Olympics, because
they MAY still be finalizing their reporter-camera crew-producer assignments,
as well as air time. But you are probably whistling in the wind when it comes
to Lake Placid -- while Three Nations Cup is a non-exclusive event (meaning
no one "owns" the rights) in the US at least, nobody is likely to send up a
camera crew because it is too late in planning terms, probably conflicts with
late-season football games that are more important in network eyes, and it
has no bearing on Olympic seedings and is therefore way too minor for them to
spare the personnel. They might send a skeleton crew to get footage for
Olympic features, but this would be totally inadequate for game coverage.

Apparently, Shannon Miller nixed the January 17 date in Vancouver(which
IMHO would have tied in nicely with the NHL All-Star game) because they
needed to travel to San Jose a couple days later, and Shannon felt that it
would have been too much. She did say that they would still come to
Vancouver though.

I'm sorry Ms. Anderson... do you remember the socre of the regional
championship game?

There is a bigger picture here... I'm not saying that Team CA should be the
only team right now BUT there aren't enough players to go around. As the
state grows more programs will be developed. There ARE "blueprints" but you
have to start small (sorry if that goes over your head).

Team CA was orginized in 1994 with Mike Johannson and has grown... Rod Gunn
has worked wonders with the orginzation. Team CA is here to stay. While a
certain squirt head coach of Team so. CA last year (no names mentioned) and
a certain Mr. Collins have attempted to destroy the states control over
women's hockey by sending out very visious (and false letters) and now
obviously we've moved on to email. Sorry Mr. Collins but as Ms. Stevens
said... weren't you at the pee wee team CA tryouts? Ahhhhh! You're daughter
didn't make it. Soooo in retaliation you have "developed" and alternative
program which will diminish as your daughter gets older.

Been there seen that

All you are doing is fighting the big picture here which does STUNT the
growth of California women's hockey.

Well, we're doing it again. People throwing spears at each other's
programs, with little or no basis in fact.

Just stop it. For the second year in a row, Lyle has done his best to
stir up trouble. For the second year in a row, I've made comments that
I wish I had not. And for the 99th time, someone has mistakenly posted
a private message by mistake to the whole list (me).

Shaboooeeee has made a post, filled with personal invective, devoid of
signature, that has no basis in reality. This will be all you hear from
me on the subject. I ask you all, including Lyle, to please follow suit.

Well, this is great. It's obvious that women's hockey is joining the
real world, because this sure looks like we've been infected by the
Little League Organizers from hell.

Sigh.

Okay, all. It's time to calm down, step back, take a deep breath and
move on. Please drop the sniping and fighting that's going back and
forth. It's gotten personal, and that means it's gone far enough. Too
far, actually, but I don't want it going any further.

Please drop it and everyone go out and run around the block a few times
to get rid of the excess emotion being ladled into the group right now.
