1. Skating with the pros: Skating with the pros is fun and challenging. Last
year I was able to participate in a over 30 benefit clinic/game with some of
the former Boston Bruins, John Pie Mckenzie, Don Marcotte, John Bucyck and 1
other guy.
I got to the rink late and had to get dressed in the room that Pie was
signing autographs in. Got onto the ice late missed warm up. I hope in the
one-one drills line and expected to play offense against another clinicee.
Much to my surprise I looked up to see Don Marcotte... ok I shouldn't have
been looking down at the puck but I was.. as soon as looked up...saw who it
was I new I was in trouble.
Later we played a game against the 4 ex-Bruins, they played the entire game
and we had short shifts of 5 or 6 players and we still lost, they even took
it easy on us. But as people have said there skating and stick handling and
passing is far superior.
Since the All-Star game was in Boston last year, they had the Stanley Cup
there... so naturally I have my picture of me with the Stanley Cup...next to
it I didn't try the lift it over the head thing..wish I had though.
2. Viruses: I suppose Ed may have been wrong in posting the virus if it
explicitly violated a list rule. But I certainly appreciate the posting. I do
not spend time searching out viruses, nor do I hear about them real or
hoaxes. I do poke around on occasion when I am on line and download things
and I am sure my other half or my boss would not appreciate me wiping out
there computer or mine by infecting it with a virus.
3. Checking: There have been some good discussions on this topic. I have to
agree with the opinion of no checking, but allow physical contact if you are
going after the puck. I can't imaging playing any other way. What am I
supposed to let people just go by because if I touch them I be penalized.
4: UNH Hockey Camp: This is a 10yr and up Camp and they allow Women, I am
signed up and can't wait. I don't want to rush July here but I want to go to
camp. The UNH facilities are state of the art and the program looks very
comprehensive. I believe I will learn alot and get my butt worked off.
PS:I apologize for my reply to a message last week that went to the list and
not just to the individual it was intended for.
Wish me luck in Montreal... I am going up with one of our local women's rec
teams to play in a tournement. We play two teams from Ontario and one of our
own teams. We are bringing up two teams and have to play our other team on
Sunday.

It should also be noted that this week long camp is sponsored by the New York
State Amateur Hockey Association and is intended as a development camp for
New York State girls who are either new ( or fairly new) to hockey. Campers
will be housed in dorms at the State University at Plattsburgh.

Hey Michelle!
GOOD LUCK in the tourney, no matter what, you'll have a great time. As far
as skating with the Pros, I know what you mean. I'm here in Cincinnati, Ohio
and although we don't have a NHL team we do have an IHL team - "The
Cincinnati Cyclones" and they skate with us at open from time to time,
especially if they are rehabbing and I participate in player sponsored
training camps during the summer. I'll never forget the time that Dave
Marcinyshin (former N.J. Devil and now Cyclone) came out to skate with us and
since I wasn't paying attention (which is usual for me) I didn't even notice
him out there, till I was paired up against him on the face off, He's 6'4"
and I'm 4'11". I looked at his Jersey (Black) and looked at mine (White) and
thought, "Uh oh, I think I wore the wrong jersey today!" But it was cool
cause when on of the Cyclones comes out to play they usually play for 1/2 the
time with one side then switch jerseys with another guy and play the last 1/2
with the other side. When Dave made his way to our side, I actually assisted
him on a goal and he skates over to me and says, (in this really LOW voice!)
"Nice pass Sweetheart!" I'll never forget that, it MADE MY DAY! Isn't it
amazing to skate with Pros or exPros on the ice? Just their skating ability
is something to experience! Well, good luck in Montreal and whether you win
or lose, "N'Importe, Amusez-vous bien a Montreal.

This is just to let those in the Niagara Region know that Lakemount
Sportsworld in Grimsby is organizing a women's league for the summer.
I spoke with the individual organizing it, and right now there are four
teams, with room for expansion if more people show interest. He said the
league would start the first week in May, and the games would be on Tues
and Thurs night, 7ish. I'm sorry, but I can't find the piece of paper I
wrote it down on. There is expected to be 16 games + 2 playoff games,
although he said it was going to be a "rec" league... 4 teams doesn't make
much of a playoff situation, but...

Could you please send me information on the camp, such as where the kids
will sleep, how much supervision there will be off ice, how many 10-11 year
old will there be, what kind of non-hockey activities will there be and
when.
How much on-ice time is there and what kind of off-ice training is there.
Who will be teaching. We have an 11 year old who plays PeeWee and with our
girls team. She is shy about leaving home but eats and drinks and sleeps
hockey.

I too was there and was amazed at the skill level of the younger players.
It warms my soul to anticipate what the future of women's hockey holds when
such skill is displayed at such a young age.

Has anyone on this list been involved with starting a women's club
team? I know several women are interested in getting one started at
the University of Maryland, College Park, and any experience that is
passed on would help greatly!! Maryland has a men's team that just
started playing Div III this year, and I understand the university is
planning to build their own rink in the near future.
Thanks in advance,

The few years before that, the championships were held in Boston. If I remember correctly, Boston College (then a club team that was funded like a Varsity team) had a pretty strong hold on the title for a few years in a row.

I was just looking through the souvenir program for the 1990 Women's
World Ice Hockey Championship. On page 13 it says that in September 1989
several new rules were established for the 1990 World Championship.
These rule changes included:
1. FULL BODY CONTACT
2. Three twenty-minute stop time periods
3. Slapshots
On page 37 in the program it says:
"Whether to body check or not is an issue of strong debate within
many countries and internationally. Although THERE IS BODY CHECKING
IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, North American teams play with no
intentional body checking."
So, it seems that there was full body contact in 1990.

The University of Minnesota's varsity team will begin play next season
(the club team WILL remain!).
Within the Midwestern Collegiate Women's Hockey Alliance, Gustavus
Adolphus College will become a varsity team next season, and St. Mary's
University will go varsity in 98-99 according to local (MN) reports.
Other schools in the league have intentions of becoming varsity teams but
none have made formal plans as of yet. This season (the league's first),
Augsburg College was the only varsity team in the MCWHA.

Hi,
I finally wore out my Brian's Theif Midnight Series catch glove. I liked
the glove, but what I didn't like is how long it took to break in and how
it flexed. I was wondering if anyone has tried any of the new female goalie

senior pro glove with good protection, since I play women's midget travel

I'd appreciate any information/suggestions that anyone has.
