I just got a copy of the new Women Sports from Sports Illustrated, and
there's a story about Cammie Granato. I haven't read it yet, but I was so
excited to see her in there! Our sport is really getting some main stream
press now. We deserve it!

Yes, there is, of sorts. Within the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto there
is a section dedicated specifically to Women's Hockey.

Media!! Good answer. I watched in disgust as the plight of Nancy
Kerrigan, went from a bizarre episode of cheating to a global media
spectacle that overshadowed the accomplishments of other athletes that
were deserving of the limelight. This inspirational woman carried an
extra baggage load that was worth more to the media than her or anyone
else's actual accomplishments. Worth so much in fact, that there was
never any real recognition of just what Kerrigan was up against. You
got it, she was up against the media. It was almost like a bet that
said, "I bet you can't be an achiever with so much negative heat from
the spotlight!" In my book the media lost, because Kerrigan became a
role model for females everywhere by persevering in the face of
incredible adversity.

Sadly, when I do hear of "PipeGate" it is always stories of where Tonya
Harding is and how she is doing. Never do I hear much about Kerrigan.
Obviously, media and marketing have become inextricable.

I noticed in another post that The HHF in Toronto does have a section
dedicated to Women's Hockey. This would be a great place to start
towards assuring that those in women's hockey that don't get the
limelight, but deserve it, can be remembered for all time. It should
also be remembered that those deserving of recognition are not
necessarily all players or coaches. Too many hurdles have been overcome
by off ice personnel to exclude them. As much as I look forward to the
day when women in hockey will get their well deserved public accolades,
I also know I will rue the day that the distractions of the players will
be worth more to the media than their accomplishments. Perhaps that
will be tempered with the knowledge that at least somewhere, they will
get their due.

I preferred receiving your warning and then having the ability to decide
myself whether it was something I'd like to follow..than to have not received
an update and been, potentially, surprised. Not all of us are able, even
within an academic environment, to have Unix-power or CERT access. And this
does affect women's hockey. If I *do* get a virus, I'll have some work to do
to replace my correspondence and/or team data (and yes, most of it is backed
up but time being what it is.......)

Thank you for taking the time.

The USA Hockey Hall of Fame is also working towards a Women's Division. Look
for it first to appear on their website.
