I hope this doesn't get me into trouble, becasue I'm asking out of
genuine curiosity. Jess wrote Becker wrote:

I'm wondering why women's hockey doesn't include body checking ...

(Perhaps the reason I'm wondering is because I've never been teh
recipient of a body check -- I don't think I even know how to ice skate!)

Thanks, hockey experts!

We have experienced the same type of problems here in Northwestern Ontario.
It seems to me that Women's Hockey is not taken very seriously by male
referees. Although I have to say that there are some very good referees that
are fair, respectful and take our game very seriously, there are an equal
number that are not. Patronizing comments, sarcasm, and a general aloofness
towards our game. So what is the answer?

Bring up the concerns to your league Executive and continue to bring them up
until you start to see change. Some ref's are just not appropriate to be
ref'ing our game.. We had one that commented to our score keeper before our
last game that "I hate Refereeing women!".. (Hey don't do us any favours
Buddy!...)We will be sure to bring this comment and others to our next
League Executive meeting.

Hi, everyone!

Is anyone out there interested in writing a short summary (1-3
paragraphs) about the recent Three Nations' Cup Tournament?

I want to include the info in the latest issue of Go,girl! I know I can
get all the details online, but I just don't have the time to surf and
research the story. If someone could help me out, I'd really appreciate
it. I'll give you a byline credit and, if you have one, I'll link to your
home page.

I know this is short notice, but I need it by noon (pacific time) on
Thursday. Right now, all I have are the dates of the competition and the
winner. I want to provide our readers with more detail so they will catch
the "hockey bug."

Thanks in advance.

Jan, Just wanted to update you: I blew out my knee! severed ACL, several
miniscus tears, and fractured tibia. :( I'll be out for more than a year.
They can't even operate until the fracture heals = after Christmas. At
least I'll be able to play again though. Hope to see you soon! I'll be at
the Pittsburgh game... Jen

I think most women who play ice hockey won't want to talk about this one for
long... Most experts would say that structurally, womens bodies couldn't
take that kind of abuse for long without sustaining injuries... (if you ask
me, no one could... One unlucky hit on the boards, as we all know could be
crippling)... Mainly the weakness or flaw is in the structure of womens hip
bones... (I don't know if these descriptions are medically accurate but, it's
what I've heard...)
Anyway, my personal feeling is that hockey, (checking or no) is a rough fast
paced sport. I'm kind of glad our league doesn't have full body and on the
boards checking; It would definitely result in more injures not to mention
make a hard game even harder. Leave it to the pros making the millions....

Erin, thanks for the invite but I play on a women's ice hockey team, not a
college team, even though I am only 20. We are also in the C division so
your team is at a higher caliber. If you have any womens teams that would
be willing to play us, please let me know. We are out of Raleigh, North
Carolina, so perhaps we would be able to find a mid point.

                            THANKS AGAIN,

Located in Calgary, Alberta (just over a 1 hour drive from Banff National Park)
the Southern Alberta Womens Hockey Association (SAWHA) will be hosting
the Second Annual April Ice Tournament from April 10-13, 1997. This is
now the largest female hockey tournament in Western Canada, we are
expecting to draw 60 teams for the upcoming tournament in 1997, and
possibly 80-100 teams in 1998.

Come and enjoy the beauty of scenic Alberta, and enjoy some good hockey
at the same time. We are accepting teams in all age categories, with
the tournament being equally split between minor and senior age categories.
Competition in Novice, Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget Girls as well
as "AAA", "A", "B" and "C" for senior teams. All participants must be
registered with their local branch of the CHA (Canadian teams) as this is
a sanctioned tournament. If you are from the US or overseas, we will
be able to find out if your registration meets our insurance
requirements.

Tournament entry is $400/team, with a three-game guarantee. Last year,
we were able to provide 4-games to 80% of our participants, as well as
free breakfasts and other perks of Western Hospitality.

Hi from South Western Ontario...

We here in London Ont. had similar problems when we first started
out. We complained to the appropriate people, and some of the problems
disappeared... for a while.
But things realy started to get better when we started training and
using our own female on-ice officials. It's a long slow road, but the
Ontario Women's Hockey Association helped, and even the local male referee's
associations helped. Now, after about 3 seasons we have 14 trained officials
doing our houseleague games. We even have a couple of level 2 refs and 1
level 3 ref for travel team play.

DON'T GIVE UP!

Actually, in men's college hockey, two line passes are legal too. But the
offsides rule has not changed even though it has changed in the NHL - the
"tag-up" rule is still in effect.

For the first time ever this year, the rule book contains a section
denoting the differences between men's and women's hockey, and both of the
differences that Jess listed are in there. This is a sign of how the
women's game is growing.

I wondered this, too, and thought that perhaps it is because our
reproductive organs are more...er..."valuable" (damageable? fragile?),
and heavy, violent contact like that could become problematic. The men
can sort of protect theirs with a piece of plastic (not ;).
