Take their names, contact the referee association through which you
have hired them and explain that their conduct was completely
unprofessional. If you do this consistantly, and if you conduct
yourselves professionally, I think you will see the referees who work
your games will straighten right up.

Hello, I'm new to the list so I thought I'd quickly introduce myself. My
name is Jen and I play for the University of Illinios. We just started a
new league here in the Midwest that will hopefully incorporate only
colleges because we had a little trouble playing girls who were too young
for us. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas about how
to help the refs understand our games. We were just in Wisconsin,
Madison and the Refs were laughing at us. They admitted that they "just
didn't understand women's hockey". I think they thought we should be
weaker and hit less. They also said it would just take time so they
could get accustomed to us. However, until then, we're going to have bad
refs. I need some ideas about how to help the refs understand that we
are serious players and they need to take us serious. I have a feeling
that they kinda think women's hockey is just a big joke. By they way, I
don't want you'll to take this the wrong way, we don't have a problem
with all the refs...just some of them. Thanks for your time.
Jen

I play with both men and women. I play in a Senior Womens A league in
Minnesota and I play pick up hockey where I am the only female. In pickup
hockey the body contact overall is not as prevalent, but I like grinding with
players for possesion of the puck.
I am only 5 feet tall and I actually do get knocked around alot more in the
Womens games (even pickup) than I do with the guys.

I hope Jen finds some good refs, 'cause we'll be down to play them this
weekend!

There is no checking in women's hockey anywhere... not just California. The
women's line is not much different. It is merely trying to acheive a group of
customers many have ignored. It is much the same way advertisers "aim" towards
a group. A couple of differences in most pants is that it has slightly more
protection in the hip areas, as well as a different cut on the top of the pant,
so as not to cut into our breasts, to be blunt.

Is anyone interested--or does anyone know of anyone who might be
interested--in coaching/tutoring a small group (2-6) of women in L.A.
once a week with the potential to grow to a regular women's clinic?
Specifics: Iceoplex in North Hills has "Stick Time" early weekday
mornings. I could ask our staff coaches, but we've all been working
with them for two or more years and I believe another perspective might
help to accelerate the learning process.
We all skate *fairly* well but could use speed conditioning. However,
what I see as our primary weakness is what I call "housekeeping" or
"sweeping"--most of us are shooting like we're pushing a broom. I am
not entirely able to grasp the techniques (especially since they vary)
of the upper-body-endowed males, and I am hoping someone who understands
women's bodies (esp. since we range in size, shape and age) might have
some particular way of helping us overcome this problem.
If anyone has any advice (which you can post or send to me separately
as well) or knows of someone to contact, please let me know! Thanks to
you all. I'm glad I've found a resource for women's hockey--I'm already
learning a lot from this list!

The University of Minnesota has ice available on January 18 and 19, 1997
to play Senior B-level games. We had originally planned to host an
out-of-town college club for a two-game series but plans have changed and
they cannot make it.
We would still like to host a club from out of town that weekend; it is
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 20 which would give collegiate
teams an extra day off to travel. The games will be played at Mariucci
Arena on the U of M Campus. Saturday's ice is scheduled immediately
following the men's varsity game against St. Cloud State (game time
approx. 10:00pm). Sunday's game time would be 1:00 or 1:15pm.
If your team is interested, please e-mail me privately at
email@hidden. We would prefer to play a collegiate team, but
will play anyone who is interested.
Best wishes to all for a great hockey season!

I don't think I've seen a message about the result of the Three Nations Cup
tournament on this mailing list yet. Canada won the final against the USA
on Sunday October 27th by a score of 1-0. I have many links to articles
about the tournament on my web page:
http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~andria/Three_Nations_96.html
And just a reminder that the CBC will broadcast the final game (between
USA and Canada) on Saturday November 2nd from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.

I have been in the same situation where the refs were giggling at us. At the
annual womens hockey tournament in Bridgetown the refs just let anything go
because they really don't consider it worth their while and just want the game
to end as quickly as possible. No, I am not exaggerating.

I hear all these horror stories, and I can at least be somewhat positive
by stating that here in Denver, we have had some decent refs. WHen we
get the same refs that do the intermediate mens rec league, they do a
pretty good job. In fact, they are more consistent than when they ref
women in mens league (guys can do whatever they want and they assume
because we're women that we're not as strong and go down easier). This
is my first year in a womens league, but so far, I am pleased when we get
these refs--heck I actually drew a penality, as well as getting two
called against me in a game. However, we do occasionally get young,
beginner refs (sometimes high school age) and they seem to be afraid of
calling anything and like is mentioned here, it gets a bit out of
control. I think part of the reason why the refs from the mens rec
leagues do a decent job is the fact that most are serious about moving up
tto a higher level (college, etc) and do put forth a good effort once
they get a feel for how we play the game.

At the Div I level, the only significant differences between men's and
women's hockey are: there is no body checking in women's hockey (although
body contact is allowed), and there is "no red line" in women's hockey,
meaning that we use the blue line instead of the red line to determine
icing, and that 2 line passes are legal.
There are other differences, some of which are very disturbing, such as the
fact that our refs are officially Div III refs and get paid less than 1/3
as much as the men's refs. However, these types of differences do not
directly affect the way we play -- our slapshots are often just as hard and
our competion is just as intense.
I've heard that the coaches and colleges are trying to change the rules and
that there will soon be a red line for Div. I women's hockey. Hopefully,
our refs will get equal treatment as well. The goal is to have us play the
exact same game as the men, minus the body checking.
