In regards to fundraising, our team has used many different ways to raise
money...some successful some not..

The largest and most successful way was for us to prepare a 'sponsorship
letter' and hand deliver it to all of our local sports bars and restaurants.
Our letter detailed the history of women in hockey in our region, described
the history of our particular team, our numbers and the phenomenal growth of
women in hockey, a cost breakdown of the Total cost to play ( including
registration, practice ice, tournaments, crests/jerseys etc..), the Players
contribution to this cost and a list of what the sponsor can expect in
return for a donation. Included in this list are things like; name on the
back of every jersey, exposure to female atheletes, media coverage, free
tickets to year end banquet, team using the sponsor's name as part of team
name and MOST importantly the expected partronage to their establishment.
In my letters, I have asked for $2000 annually and have received $1000
annually. This has been very effective for us but keep in mind that your
team HAS to frequent the establishment, even if its just for a pop after the
game. Sometimes the sponsor prefers to pay in two installments just to
ensure that the team is holding up thier end of the deal.

We have also had fundraiser Boogies at a local hall. We sell tickets for
$2.00 and each girl HAS to sell 20 tickets. This is time intensive and
requires alot of organiztion (hall rental, music, booze, prizes, tickets
etc..) however it did net us approximately $1000 ...

Those are the two large fundraisers that we have used, we have also had many
smaller fundraiser such as; 50/50 cash draw (net $250 and labour intensive),
a car wash (net $200 and again labour intensive), selling chocolates
($400-$800) and retaining individual sponsorships. Our individual
sponsorships were for $300 each sponsor. The sponsors name is than worn on
the back of the girl's jersey under her number. Last year, we divided this
sponsorship up, $100 goes directly towards the girl's registration and the
other $200 to the team. This year however, the entire amount will go
towards the girl's registration and other fees for the Las Vegas tourney in
Feb 27-Mar2 1997.

On point to remember about fundraising..it takes a lot of organization and
motivation to be successful. The team members have to commit to it.

Hope this helps :)
