Hi All,
I have an old fashioned, back to basics suggestion for you...
Remember when we were all little and on the local baseball teams?
(don't worry, I'm not gonna suggest the tin can and bell outside the
supermarket...) But this might work; try soliciting sponsorships from your
place of work or local businesses. Who knows if you sew that little patch
with their company name on the sleeve they might just like the idea of
donating a little more cashola!

Lisa A

Hi Sheryl.
It sounds like the most of the leagues administrations have, or are getting
their acts together... Improvements are being made (in spite of trying to
keep up with the phenomenal growth factor) and there seems to be more open
communications throughout the league.
Like you, I am trying to get a database or a "pool" started kind of like what
organized little league baseball was doing. ie; your mom would sign you up
and some one would split up the players whether it be according to skill or
even location and from there they'd make up the teams. You may not end up on
your best friend's team but at least everyone got to play! If people didn't
like their team or were completely miserable we could organize a player
trading system.... WHY NOT? Stranger things have been done!
I've been writing & typing and calling along with many others who are trying
to help improve things for everybody! Thanks to this list and the people on
it I think I'm finally getting through! Lets keep up the buzz and really
make things happen.
It will work.
Sincerely,
Lisa J. Addario

I suppose it depends on how much $ you're trying to find. Our budget
for the 96-97 winter season is just over $28,000. I've been working
on just this approach for our team, the Chesapeake Bay Lightning in
     Maryland.

To make any impact on the per player cost, we were looking for about
$5000, but not necessarily all from one sponsor. I've approached a
few small businesses, but the problem here is that everyone is used to
sponsoring Little League baseball and soccer teams, which are
inherently much less expensive sports. You can outfit a whole soccer
     team with T shirts for about $100. A $100 sponsorship doesn't really
help a hockey team with their expenses much, and anything higher is
more than most businesses are willing to consider. They'd rather keep
their sponsor money for the cheap sports - which, by the way, also
     tend to have more spectators.

So for us, the "patch on the sleeve" enticement hasn't worked. Oh,
another problem associated with the patch idea is the cost of the
patch. It's almost a question of diminishing returns. To make it
worth while to accept a sponsorship and get patches for everyone's
jersey, it has to be a few hundred dollars, and you're back to the
question of finding someone who has the much to spend on one sports
team - and a group of adults at that.

     Good luck!
     Jan.

We are in the process of incorporating our 'team' as a non-profit
organization, which requires developing by-laws, electing officers, and all
the other stuff (meetings, committees, rules enforcement...) involved with
becoming organized. The nice attraction to this tremendous effort is all
donations are tax deductable once we file as a corporation. This can
be important to companies willing to sponsor you.
Also, if you go knocking on potential sponsor doors, a good suggestion
is to have a picture of your jersey (front and back) to show where their
logo could fit. And have a list of games dates and where they'll be
played so they can get a feel for the amount of exposure and where their
logo will be seen. Many local companies won't sponsor us because
we travel out of state mostly.
If you're interested in developing bylaws for your women's hockey team,
I'll be happy to send a copy of ours once completed (hopefully tonight!).

P.S.--Thanks to everyone on the WIH list that sent us copies of their
by-laws, most of which we've included in our extensive version!

It is strange to hear a problem of "full leagues" for women when out
here in CA I can't find many women's leagues. Disney Ice limits their
"women's league" to 3 teams, all at the same level (mostly new players,
some intermediate and some very very good). This does not make for very
good competition. They would probably raise the number of teams if more
women were interested. Over the summer most of the players in the
Disney women's league also played in men's leagues or on women's teams
who played against men's teams.

I know hockey is not as big in southern CA as in MN and MA, but does
anyone know of any leagues or how I might find enough women to start
one?

Thanks,
Ingrid Moon

Hi Everyone,

My team have to fundraise quite often to win suuport from the local association,
and one thing that works quite well here is a chocolate drive.
You know, running aroung selling chocolates to work mates, friends, family etc.
I have found that works really well.

Chris

Hi Everyone.

I think the real issue here is not that there are not enough teams, but that
there is not enough ice rinks and ice time devoted to women's teams.
We can start teams anytime anywhere.
We need to begin lobbying for new ice rinks to support the growth of women's
ice hockey.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Lori,

Since our women's team is still forming, I will be looking for answers
to this one myself soon.....
One of the things that seems to work for the men here (and I think we
will try) is to get sponsorship from sports bars and resturants. If you
tend to congregate to a bar or pub after games (of would be willing to)
I would suggest approaching that establishment. Carrabas and Subway
both have mens teams here--proving that a wide spectrum of
establishments may be willing to sponsor teams.

Good luck!

Joan has hit it right on the head. Ice time is also at a premium here in
RI. What we really need are more rinks, and reasonable times on the
existing rinks.
