Nina,
I don't know where you are but here are some of my experiences. I
started playing in high school for a girls team (checking had not yet
been removed). We had the benefit of being one of two U.S. teams
playing against Canadian teams. I could skate when I started but
improved greatly (pratice makes perfect). In college, my school had
men's hockey but no women's at all. I skated all most everyday at
lunch. My first job took me to Northern Virginia (hot bed of hockey it
was not). I found a in-house league to play in (one of two women).
They played with A, B and C lines on each team, A being the best. Each
team had to rotate the lines keeping the equal lines on the ice
together. The C lines had guys who could barely skate. In typical
sexist fashion I was put on the C line before they even saw me skate.
After they saw me skate, I remained on the C line but would double shift
on the A or B if they were short a player.

I guess what I am trying to get to is there are men out there who are
learning to play hockey and can barely skate too. Find a league (mens
or womens) where they will afford you the opportunity to learn and get
better. Once you feel comfortable with your level of play find a league
where you enjoy playing.

Being 13 years old is certainly "young" enough to start. I was 25 years old
when I started and I am sure there are people on this list who were/are older
than I am when they started. Its never to late to learn anything! Good luck!

Hi out there:

Are there any women/girls (doesn't matter what age) that would like to get
together and rent some ice maybe once a week and scrimmage amongst ourselves?
12 - 22 people would be good. I know a guy who runs a rink that we could maybe
get ice time from. Please e-mail me personally if you're interested.

Nina,
Hello. I may only be 14 but I was back up goalie last year for my team.
Now look first of all if you let the pucks go buy you the coaches
probably will cut you. Now being only 14 we don't have to make the team.
We are automatically on the team. Now also you will probably get really
nervous before a game. That is very common especially for your first
game. Just go for it. If you let the goals in it really doesn't matter.
It isn't your fault anyway. You may get blamed for it but it is the
other players faults more than it is yours. Just remember that.

Definitely don't start on figure skates. The toe picks will trip you up, and
the blade is much flatter than a hockey skate's, which makes it unsuitable
for the kind of stop-start-turning skating you will do in hockey. Also, it
means you'll have to re-learn your technique once you get hockey skates if
you're used to balancing in the center of your skate instead of low and well
forward, as you should with hockey skates.

As for type, no one type is right for everyone. Try on all the skates you can
and pick the ones that feel most comfortable. Get a good salesperson to help
you out (that's what they're there for). As you're still probably wearing
junior sizes, the prices will be lower than for us Bigfoots, but be prepared
for a little sticker shock. Another good route is used skates: if you know
someone who plays who has outgrown their skates, see if you can borrow them
and try them out. Or go to a used equipment store; again, TRY THEM ON. TRY
THEM ALL ON if you have to. Your skates are you most important piece of
equipment, and it's essential that you take your time picking a pair that
makes you happy.

You asked earlier about what equipment you need: this is what we require for
our beginning women's group:
--Skates (obviously)
--Helmet and face shield (the one piece of equipment you should try to buy
NEW)
--Shin guards
--Elbow pads
--Gloves
Later, when you've played for a while and get on a team, you'll need pants
and shoulder-chest pads. At your age level, you'll probably also be required
to wear a neck guard (a little padded thingy that wraps around your throat)
and a mouthpiece; you'll also want to get a pelvic protector, which is the
equivalent of a guy's jock. Trust us -- you get hit there once, you'll be
sorry if you don't have one.

You can buy all this stuff used -- check sporting goods stores in your area
or bulletin boards at your local rinks. Hockey IS considered the most
expensive sport, but if you buy equipment that's comfortable and durable, it
should last you a while.

Good luck to you and your friend

Nina, Nina!!

Relax! You're just starting! Everyone STINKS when they start, so don't worry
about it! I've been playing a year, recently as much as three or four times a
week, and even though I've improved a lot lately, I make mistakes every game,
sometimes every shift. Watch the pros -- they screw up constantly; the trick
is not to let it get to your head. As they say, "Skate it off" -- if you make
a mistake, it's history, you must go forward and keep playing as
intelligently and as hard as ever. Never waste time worrying about the puck
that got by you, or you won't be paying attention and another one will get
by.

It's a game! Have fun!

Start now. I started at 19 but wish I had started earlier. Almost everyone
I have talked to has said the exact same thing but they all started at
18-20. You are definately not too old to start. Buy some good skates and
start practicing. Good luck and have fun!!

Yes, they do. I had a game today and a player from the other team
cross-checked one of my teammates and my teammate, Wendy started
swinging. It was a really good punch too. Another incident in the same
game was when one of my teammates hit a girl and nearly put her elbow
through the girls head. I know it sounds really bad, but my teammate is
like six foot, and the girl she "hit" was barely over five foot.

I would suggest taking a learn to skate class. In my area, (outside
Philadelphia) they are often offered in adult night school courses. They
will teach you the basics, backwards, forwards, crossovers, stopping, and
generally make you safer for yourself and others when you hit the ice for
serious hockey play. Also, figure skates and hockey skates offer different
joys and sorrows, so don't sweat that one. There is nothing funnier
(pardon my sick humour) than watching a figure skater step onto the ice for
the first time in hockey skates and fall while looking for his/her toe
pick. As far as recommendations for hockey skates, go to a reputable store
and plan to spend some time. It will be worth it. Happy trails.

Debbie

Oh, I forgot, do you know why most girls play defence at the mites and
squirt level? Cuz they started out as figure skaters and are usually the
most proficient on the team at skating backwards.

Subject: List Poll
Message-ID:

Usually I just lurk on this list, but since everyone else seems to be
contributing to this poll, I figure I should as well.

Name: Mary Cheney

Position: Goalie

Team: I play for one of the women's teams in Denver. We used to be
called the Flyers but we're in the process of renaming the team.

Age: 27

School: Colorado College

Playing History: I've been playing for 10 years. My first year in
college, the club team talked me into trying out as a goalie. I'd been
a field hockey goalie in high school and they told me the switch would
be easy. They lied. After spending most of my first season flopping
around, I got hooked on ice hockey. Once I graduated (1991), I moved
up to Denver and started playing for the Flyers.

When I first started playing, there were 6 women's teams in Colorado.
Today there are 10 and we're adding 1-2 teams per year. We could
probably add more, but there just isn't enough ice available right now.

Equipment: I started out using hand-me-down equipment from the men's
club team. Since I graduated, I've been upgrading my gear in bits and
pieces. Last year I got rid of the last of my old equipment when I
bought some new Heaton leg pads.

Solution for Equipment Stink: Keep it in the garage.

Betsy,
	I'm no pro! but I started at 24. 23? I don't even know. I dont'
think 13 is too young to start and to develop strong skills--if you are
good at picking things up quickly you can even surpass some of the kids
who HAVE been playing since they were 4 or 5. Just because they've
played longer doesn't mean they are any good...I discovered that
coaching girls your age in soccer, and also when I first joined soccer.
The tough part is that hockey is a lot more complex to learn, so just
put your head and your heart into it and don't worry about your age!

Nina,

This is not a stupid question, but a very funny one! Of course women
fight. I've seen some incredibly hot-headed women--one was suspended
for shouting at the refs, the scorekeeper and one of our injured players
for 15 minutes, delaying the game, and we never found out what set her
off or what she was screaming about. I've also seen some really violent
lunges and fist fights between women and also men v. women. It CAN
happen.

Although I have a tendancy to rack up penalties, they're usually not
from retaliation, just doing my job too well (i.e. prevent a goal by
tripping). I don't believe in letting your temper get the best of
you--if you are so concerned with fighting your head is not in the game,
where it should be. If you want to play well, be sure to concentrate on
learning the skills that will make you a good player and don't just go
for the "chippy" technique which many *people* (both genders) use to
compensate for lack of skill.

Also remember, more than anything, that this is JUST A GAME and if you
are so blindly and violently intense you are not going to have nearly as
much fun. People will whack at you and elbow you and fall on you and
trip you and check--even if it's not allowed--you, and so on. It's all
a part of the game, and a part of what makes it so much fun to me,
without thinking every contact is a personal affront to me.
