Insurance, not sure anything else.

NA

NA

Other notes: the league we play in now was created by players and the teams
in the league run it. Officers are voted on. We inform them of our ice times,
and one of the officers puts together a schedule (4 games against each team,
2 home & 2 away), 1 home & 1 away before Jan, the same after. Then we meet and
work out any problems. Home team is responsible for referees. We play at
different rinks, some of us have decent ice times, some don't. some of the
teams are 1+ hours apart, and the 10pm games times can be rough, but it works
out ok.

Hello!

I'm new on the mailing list, and i thought I had better tell you a little more
about myself.

I live Melbourne, Australia, and I'm 16 years old. I play in the women's team for
my state, and I also play in the guy's league. In the state team I play senoir 'C',
and the other team, I play Junior 'A'. I'm in the process of creating a home page,
on the women's team I play for, The Melbourne Dolphins. I also have the invitation
from Andria Hunter to have a link from her home page to mine and vice-versa.

I've been playing Ice hockey for nearly a year, and our coach is one of Australia's
best- Dan Reynolds. He was originally from Boston, USA.

Our team comprises of all sorts- from beginners to senior players. Most of the
beginners are getting heaps better, and are definitly hooked on the sport!
I know I am!!

Thanks to Rhonda and Syrilyn who mailed me and helped me out.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here in Australia, women who play ice hockey
find it really hard to start playing unless a women's team is in the vicinity.
The guy's teams are really reluctant to let us play, and if they do let us, we're
relagated to the third or fourth lines.

Could anyone enlighten me on the female:male ratio of ice hockey players where-ever
you are? I'm just curious to see if it's as bad as it is in my home state.

gotta go.

Christina. (CHRIS)

Tom--

When I was talking to Alain Lemieux (yes, brother of Mario) at the Pens'
new facility, we were going to enter two teams into league play. We'd be
covered by USA Hockey insurance (had to be, according to rink rules) and
we would play each other, but do a few other clinics and such that Alain
and I would do together (I'm currently Level 2, USA Hockey, but plan on
aiming for Level 3 after this season). Cost? Exactly the same as what the
men paid. It was pricey -- I don't remember exact amounts since it's been
a year -- but seemed worth it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find enough
players to fill the teams!

SO. That said, if there are any women in the Pittsburgh/West Virginia
area who are willing to drive to the rink at Southpointe, please drop me
an e-mail! No experience necessary! Even though I'm involved with the new
team at Chatham College, seeing a senior women's team here in the Burgh
is one of my life goals -- hey, a girl can't coach all the time! She
needs to play, too!

I'd be interested in seeing a final tally of what you get, Tom. :)

Best of luck with all of this...

Susan

I would like to know whether ice hockey is as expensive
elsewhere as it is in Chicago. The senior mens leagues cost
around $2700 for a season! I suppose it is fortunate that
being a beginning player, I'm not even close to being able
          to play in a league.

I have been lucky enough to finally (after many months) find
a women's team that will let me play. I tried to set up my
own team but found insurance to be a real obstacle. Can
someone tell me how they overcame this insurance issue?
How much did it cost for you and how long does it last?
Also, how did you spread the cost? Were you able to start
even before having 20 women or willing to play?

          Thanks

Subject: League Set Up..
Message-ID:

I too would like information regarding league set up. Specifically, how
different divisions are formed etc.. Let me explain our situation: Thunder
Bay, Ontario has had a womens league since 1989. It has been steadily
growing and recently it has been rapidly growing. We had 4 senior teams in
1994-95 season and 6 in the 1995-96 season and are anticipating at least
8-10 teams for the coming 1996-97 season. Where the problem lies is two fold.

The first is that there is a diversity in the skill level of the teams in
the league. There are two experienced teams (B) in our league, there are
three intermediate teams (C) and then 1 (2 this coming season) beginner
teams (D). The B & C teams are competitive with each other but the beginner
D team is barely competitive with the C teams and not at all with the B teams.

The second problem lies within the Region's Representative Teams. Each year
there are try outs and a Senior Representative Team is formed to represent
our region at the Provincials. This team is in addition to Players house
league team. They practice early Sunday morning and play exhibition games
against the Midget Rep Team. The Rep. teams players are concerned that they
do not get enough time together to gel and to be competitive at the
Provincials since they do not play together regularly all year.

The proposal before the Executive is to divide up the league into two
divisions. They are planning on allowing the Midget Representative Team to
join the Senior league as a house team as well as to have the Senior Rep.
Team join our league as a house team as well. This would create an 'elite'
league of the two Rep. teams and the two current B teams (assuming they
would still be B teams without the Rep. players). The second league would be
of low calibre. Point of Interest: the Executive Members elected to
represent the Senior Division are all on the Senior Rep. Team and wish to
play together.

As a member of the remaining C teams, we are very concerned about this move
for a number of reasons. The first concern is that since the Senior Prov.
Rep team is made up of players from ALL of the house league teams, the
removal of these players would reduce the calibre of play and
competitiveness for the remaining teams. This would not only affect our
league play but would affect our competitiveness in out of town tournaments.
The C teams would only be playing the D teams and will not be challenged and
will not improve like they could playing the B teams. We are also
concerned about the nature of the Representative Team and how it will be
formed in the future. There are many C team players that are very close to
being able to play on the Rep. team but need one maybe two more years
experience in the league but without these better players to 'play up to'
and learn from, the progress will be severely impeded. We are also
concerned that since the Rep. team will be like a house league team, it will
(and to a degree already is) become a click that is near impossible to
penetrate in the future (in theory there are to be try outs each year).
Further, there are many of us the enjoy our House League team so much that
we want to play with these ladies during the regular season but also aspire
to represent our Region at the Provincials. The Executive proposed that
there would be a few cross over (token)games where the two divisions would
play each other. Realistically, this would serve to prove their point
regarding the diversity of skill level, the remaining teams (without their
former Players that are now Rep. Team Players) would not be competitive
against a Rep. Team and the games would be blow outs. A team cannot be
thrown into high calibre hockey once playing all year in low/medium calibre
hockey.

We are desperately looking for advice or comments on how to come to a
resolution of the current problems of our league. Last season was such an
excellent season we would be so disappointed to have our league altered in
such a detrimental way (in our opinion)that would not only diminish the
level of enjoyment but also potentially deter growth in the league. The
Executive postponed its decision until early July regarding these matters
and we are trying to come up with a feasible compromise. Does anyone have
any thoughts on this matter? Any and all would be welcomed..
