ECAC Women's Hockey Release #8, January 22, 1996
THE BAUER/ECAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Alison Wheeler, Providence (Waterbury, VT) - A junior forward, Wheeler
collected four points at the Granite State Invitational. More importantly,
she registered a hat trick against Northeastern, scoring all of her team's
goals in a 3-1 victory.
THE COOPER/ECAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dana Antal, Cornell (Esterhazy, SASK) - A freshman left wing, Antal
netted her first career hat trick in a 4-1 defeat of Brown. One of
them came on a power play. She then added a goal and assisted on the
game-winner in a 6-3 victory over St. Lawrence. Antal is tied for her
team's scoring lead with 21 points.
ECAC HONOR ROLL
Laurie Belliveau, Yale (Manchester, MA) - The sophomore goalie made 23 saves
to earn her first shutout of the season in a scoreless battle with Bowdoin.
Andrea Blakely, St. Lawrence (Nepean, ONT) - A junior forward, Blakely was
involved in all three of her team's goals against Cornell, with 1-2 3 totals.
Sarah Hood, Dartmouth (Pelkie, MI) - The sophomore forward tallied two
goals in her team's 5-1 defeat of Middlebury.
Danyel Howard, Northeastern (Wasilla, AK) - A senior forward, Howard was
involved in all four of her team's goals at the Granite State Invitational,
recording one assist and three goals.
Erin Magee, Boston College (Troy, NY) - Returning to her hometown, the
rookie center led the Eagles to a crushing defeat of RPI with three goals
and three assists. It was the third hat trick of the season for Magee.
Dina Solimini, New Hampshire (S. Weymouth, MA) - The Wildcats' senior
keeper, Solimini was in net for every minute last weekend, recording a
1-1-1 record. She had 81 saves (.900) and allowed nine goals, with a
season-high 31 saves versus Concordia.
Kathryn Waldo, Northeastern (Cross Plains, WI) - A freshman forward,
Waldo was named to the Granite State Invitational All-Tournament Team after
scoring three goals and adding an assist on the weekend.
CORNELL JUMPS AHEAD IN LONE ECAC CONTEST
In the only ECAC game of the week, the Cornell Big Red won its fourth
game in a row with a 6-3 defeat of St. Lawrence and moved into a
fifth-place tie with Princeton. The day before, Cornell also took a
convincing 4-1 victory over Brown in a non-league game, featuring a hat
trick by rookie Dana Antal. The Granite State Invitational at host New
Hampshire featured a cast of perennial powers in women's hockey, including
Concordia, Northeastern and Providence. Unfortunately for the ECAC
schools, the title was taken north of the border with Concordia, who
completed a clean, 3-0 sweep. The Stingers were led by former PC star
Cammi Granato, who was named Tournament MVP. ECAC players making the
all-tournament team included Alana Blahoski (PC), Annie Camins (UNH),
Heather Reinke (UNH) and Kathryn Waldo (NU). In a slow week of league
action, the ECAC Division I schools racked up a 4-0-1 record against ECAC
Alliance teams. Boston College led the way with a 14-1 ripping of RPI. In
an unusual scoreless game, Yale tied Bowdoin.
