Here are the awards that are given out at the end of the year on the
University of Toronto women's team. There may be another one or two,
but this is all that I can remember at the moment:
most improved player
most sportsmanlike player
most valuable player
best defense
leading scorer
highest academic average
Towards the end of this season two women on my team distributed the
following list of pseudo-awards. We each wrote down our selection
for each award and then these two players summarized the information
and gave us each a copy of the results. It was a lot of fun! Thanks
to Bridget #44 (who is on this mailing list!) and Sue Ann #10 for
organizing it! :-) If I get around to it, I'll put the results on
the Varsity Blues team web page.

I have made a handy index web page that has links to a lot of my web
pages, but has minimal graphics. This is probably the best page to put
in your bookmarks file because you can get to most of the other pages
from this page. It's located at:
http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~andria/Index.html
As always, suggestions are welcome. Thanks to Marc for making the
"Quick Index" graphic for my homepage!
There are also a few more links on my player profiles web page. The
CHA has made a page for each woman who will be competing for Canada at
the 1996 Pacific Rim tournament. Links to these pages can be found
from the player profiles page:

Hockey quote of the day from an old coach of mine:
"Every time you shoot, shoot for a `spot.' Shoot to score. This sounds
silly but watch your fellow players and notice how many times they shoot
simply for the sake of shooting."
Remember, the puck sees the net from a different perspective than you do.
Sometimes I find it useful to look at the net with the puck at the end of
my stick, and then I lie down on the ice and put my eye right behind the puck
to see the view the puck has of the net. I know it looks silly, so make
sure you do it after practice when nobody is around! :-) But seriously,
this is a very important point to realize ... notice how different your
view of the net is than the puck's view of the net, and take that into
consideration when you're shooting.

Subject: ECAC playoffs
Message-ID:
It was good to see Richard Hungerford's analysis of this weekend's first
round of ECAC playoffs. I thought I'd send along my opinions.
#1 Brown vs. #8 Colby - This should be the most exciting game of the
weekend, unless you like the hockey equivalent of a baseball pitchers'
duel. Both teams can score -- a lot. Brown has three strong lines,
including a third line that features the center from last year's first
line (Becky Kellar)! On Colby, it amazes me how much time Sittler and
Gordon spend on the ice. Laura Halldorson has done a tremendous job. But
I can't see Brown bowing out early again this year -- the Bears should
win a high-scoring matchup.
#2 UNH vs. #7 Princeton - Princeton actually HURT its chances by moving
up a spot last weekend. The Tigers play all right against Brown, but have
been baffled this year by UNH. UNH has the perfect combination of
forwards, defensemen and a great goalie. I was surprised they lost last
weekend and will be surprised if they don't win their next three and take
the ECAC title.
#3 Dartmouth vs. #6 Northeastern - I am very impressed that Dartmouth was
able to earn the No. 3 seed this year. They have excellent team defense
backed by Sarah Tueting in goal, but I imagine they will have a very hard
time offensively against Northeastern. They struggled to score 2 against
Princeton Sunday, and the Tigers have given up 4.90 goals per game this
year. I would expect NU to make this the lone upset of round 1.
#4 Providence vs. #5 Cornell - Julie Andeberhan's coaching job this year
(combined with Karen Kay and UNH's losses last weekend) should assure her
coach of the year honors. I saw the Big Red play without freshman Dana
Antal and they played an excellent team game and looked outstanding
despite the lack of any superstars. But Providence has been playing
terrifically of late, and I would think the offense of Wheeler-Baker
combined with defenders like McCabe and Blahoski will help the Lady
Friars prevail in what should be a very close game.
All in all it looks like a good field for a very exciting tournament.

I see all this commentary on ECAC playoffs, what about the Alliance playoffs?
When are they playing and what teams are involved? I know RIT is one of them
(that's where I am now!) and Middlebury, but who are the other two? What
days/times are they playing and where? Any information that can be supplied
would be a great help.
Thanks,

Message-ID:
There are many prep schools in the northeast with girls' teams and the
regular season is over. There is a championship at the end of the year and
it began yesterday with the following results:
Kimball-Union Academy 10 Buckingham-Brown & Nichols School 1
Cushing Academy 3 Lawrence Academy 1
Taft School 5 Deerfield Academy 3
Tabor Academy 4 Choate-Rosemary Hall 1
The semi-finals are at 2:00 and 4:00 on Saturday, March 2 at the Taft
School in Watertown, CT and the Final game will be Sunday at 1:00 also at
Taft.
Taft will play Cushing and KUA will have Tabor.
At noon on Saturday the Division 2 final will be held, but I do not know
who it will feature.
Many of this year's seniors will be off to the collge ranks next year and
the level of play is quite high. The girls who play at these schools come
from all over the US and Canada and we tend to be ignored by USA Hockey
since we are not members. A look at any ECAC roster is testament to the
level of play.
I will post the results as the games are completed.
Cheers, Bill
