Thanks, Andria! Thrilled to hear that womens' hockey may regain varsity
status! I think you are right about attracting some better players once
their status changes. I recall that many potential players opted to
concentrate on other teams such as the Goldenhawks (not that that
necessarily helped that team!). I am a little curious as to how they
might regain status as the issues resulting in the cutting of the team
have not, to my knowledge, been resolved. Nonetheless, great news!

Thanks,
Karen

This past weekend the Roseville Girls High School team became the
Second Girls State High School Hockey Champions! They defeated the
Burnsville Girls High School team. I forgot to bring papers into
work for scores, etc. Will try and remember to do so tomorrow.
Everyone "out east" should be looking at Winny Brodt and the Curtin
sisters to recruit! (I'm know they've already contacted Winny!)

ECAC League Quarterfinals (campus sites) Home team listed first
#1 Brown __ - #8 Colby __ 2:00 pm
#2 UNH __ - #7 Princeton __ 1:00 pm
#3 Dartmouth __ - #6 NU __ 12:30 pm
#4 Providence __ - #5 Cornell __ 1:00 pm

Now that the wild endings to the ECAC Women's League and Ivy League have
concluded with Brown repeating as ECAC title holders and Cornell claiming the
Ivy crown, it is time for the ECAC Women's Championship (finals at UNH March
9-10). The first round is this Saturday at campus sites and features a one
game elimination match. It's the Ivies versus the Big Three plus Colby!
Considering the way the league season finished, I can only ponder who might
win this weekend!

#1 Brown over #8 Colby
The Brown Bears have the most attacking talent in the League. If they start
scoring goals like they can, Brown is one of the squads that could walk away
with the Championship. The Colby White Mules have a great offense and are a
lot of fun to watch. If they get a couple of early goals, anything could
happen. This is my dream match! You have to give Brown the advantage, but I
expect a high scoring game decided in the closing minutes. Yesssss!!!!

#2 UNH over #7 Princeton
The New Hampshire Wildcats slipped up on the last weekend in Providence. I
still believe, with home ice advantage for the entire play-offs, that they are
the team to beat in the League Championship. They are the most confident team
I have seen this year. I believe this will be the year UNH wins the
tournament, and in style. The Princeton Tigers have had an up and down year
and will need a big effort to advance. They have a well-balanced team and
could surprise a few people. I anticipate a UNH blowout.

#3 Dartmouth over #6 Northeastern
The Dartmouth Big Green is the other team that could get it together and blow
everyone else away. They are extremely tough in their own end, have a lovely
attack. I would not be amazed to see them in the final. The Northeastern
Huskies have the strongest defensive pairings in the league. If they can get
their passing game moving they could shock Big Green and make the final four.
I think the key element is how much respect Dartmouth gives NU. Too much
could spell disaster for DC.

#5 Cornell over #4 Providence College
The defending champion Providence College Friars can not be counted out. They
are the hottest team in the league and I think will win any close match. The
Ivy Champion Cornell Big Red are one of the most improved teams and will be a
difficult opponent to put away in the play-offs. It would be a fine run for
them to make it to Durham. I thought I'd take a chance and pick Big Red to
surprise the heavily favored Friars!

Dave was not trying to be unpleasant with the comment about the sportsmanship
trophy. He was actually indicating that most tournaments do not provide
trophies for sportsmanship, and that there was a lot of good sportsmanship
demonstrated during this tournament. Also the trophy was huge! I went back to
the program to determine more specifics of the teams, but the only additional
info I could come up with is the Surrey team was called the Ice Demons. The
Seattle Jr girls were the Jr Ladyhawks. The Armstrong and Langley teams did not
have names.

How many teams girls teams do they have in Armstrong and Langley?

I am forwarding to the list the results of the first ever Girls Apple
Cup held in Wenatchee, WA the weekend of Feb 24-25th. The results were
sent to me by Dave O'Leary who coordinated the tournament. His
daughter and my two daughters played on the Wenatchee team. The
teams were 11-17 year old girls from Spokane, Seattle, and Wenatchee,
WA and Armstrong, Surrey and Langley from B.C., Canada. The format
was as follows: 2 points were awarded for each period won and two
points for each game won. In addition, one point was awarded to the
team with the least amount of penalty minutes. As can be seen from
the point spread between the top 4 teams, it was a close competition.
The girls all had a great time and some excellent hockey was played.
It is hoped that this will become an annual event, and become larger
in the coming years, expanding to a true tournament format. Most of
the teams will be playing in Armstrong BC the weekend of March 16-17
in the North Okanogan Spring Thaw tournament. Good luck to all the
     participants.

Spokane won and Armstrong came in Second with Surrey in third.

Spokane 19 1/2 points

Armstrong 17 points

Surrey 16 points

Wenatchee 14 1/2 points

Langley 10 1/2 points

Seattle Jr. 3 points

Seattle Jrs. got the Sportsmanship Trophy. They played Langley on Sunday
and
it
was just a great game to watch. All the girls from both teams were cheering
each
other on and helping each other up of the ice when they fell during a
whistle
it
was a great game that had alot of sportsmanship in it.

I'm sure Seattle Jrs. don't have very many Sportsmanship Trophys in their
showcase. These girls earned it.

***** NOTES from HARRIS, zharris (zharris @ PACINST) at 2/27/96 2:25 PM
Dave and Tom-

Thanks for the Apple Cup results. It was great to see...however-
It would be great if you could clarify the teams a bit more on the results
of the Girls Apple Cup. There are several girl's teams from the areas you
listed (i.e. Langley and especially Seattle Jr.) with different levels and
different team names that fall under the ages of 11 to 17 years old.

Also, I must disagree that Seattle Jr. "don't have very many Sportsmanship
Tropheys in their showcase." And yes, I am sure they earned it.

In reference to the Apple Cup Tourney and the clarification of teams by
name and level, the question was asked:

>How many girl's teams do they have in Armstrong and Langley?

There are tons of girl's teams from Langley (I am not familiar with
Armstrong) and other B.C. areas at all levels. I know most teams from
Canada have an A and B team. I am positive that there are A and B teams
from Langley, Seattle and Surrey for the midgit and/or 11 to 17 age group
in girl's hockey. Actually, I think (and I might be mistaken) that the
Surrey Ice Demons is a PeeWee team??? Please correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, it is wonderful to see the great numbers for this age group! Way
to go!

As for the following comments made initially:

>I'm sure Seattle Jrs. don't have very many Sportsmanship Tropheys in their
showcase. These girls earned it.<

My response was to disagree. I guess I did not understand that the
comment was meant that they are "very young and have not had the
opportunity to build up their trophey case" (Dave), and/or "indicating that
most tournaments do not provide trophies for sportsmanship" (Tom Vehec).
Dave and Tom were kind to email me and clarify their comments :). Being
familiar with a few of the huge amounts of teams in the Seattle Jr.
Association, I can vouch for those teams as being top notch in respects to
sportspersonship.

Thanks for all the communication/responses and results!

Hi all, it's getting close to that time of year again and this being my
first year managing I was wondering what awards everyone knows of.
Either that have been given out or that you've received. I'm looking for
both the serious kind, like Most Improved, and the silly kind (mock
awards), like Most Likely to Fall Taking a Slapshot or Unstopable (for
those of us who can't stop yet! ). I can post a list of Awards
if everyone is interested, this will probably be something to go in the
