hi again,

If you want to check out the list of teams, you can access thru
Andria's page or go directly to:
http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~andria/Team_List.html

If you don't have web access, email me and I'll send a text copy to
you.

We have some info on teams in 17 states. Unfortunately, some of these
are just that they have university club teams. For example:

Colorado

Colorado University Club Teams
------------------------------
Colorado College
University of Colorado-Boulder

I would hope that have more than that.... So if you want to send me
any more information, please do so.... If you don't have contact
people, at least list the team name and rink that you play out of.

Thanks

Rhonda

Kenny Zalewski has generously created an HTML version of the USA Hockey
rulebook (1995-97). You can access it at:

http://www.cs.rpi.edu/~kennyz/Hockey/rulebook/rulebook.html

(You want to look under "Section Two: Teams".)

Personally, if I knew it was just a casual game and, furthermore, the
opposing coach/captain had no problem with it, I would have let it slide.

Then again, I'm only a Level 1 official who doesn't yet know ALL the rules
inside-and-out, so you may not want to take my word as gospel. :-)

Game One:

The Boston College Eagles beat the Terriers of Boston University 10-0. BC
showed a lot of class by making a game of it with BU's developing club side.
The Eagles were lead on defense by Genevieve Missirlian. She seemed to be
having a good time while demonstrating some puck control skills. Caroline
Miller was the BC forward most often in the right place at the right time.
The line that played the best as a unit featured Laura Traynham, Erin Magee
and Claudia Asano.

It was good to see Boston University with such a large squad of players.
Clearly women's ice hockey is slowly catching on at Terrierland. Goalie Laura
Kellogg faced a ton of shots and responded with a strong performance.
Defenders Stacy Vasil and Marie Isenburg did a fair job of boxing out the
Eagles in their own zone. BU's outstanding player was Shana Osler. She has a
very good all-around game and covered a large amount of the ice with her
rushes and back-checking.

Game Two:

The Northeastern Huskies conquered the Harvard Crimson 4-0. Harvard, with
their leading scorer out with an injury, had an attitude that smelled of
defeat. The Huskies did not play a grand game with too much individual play
getting in the way of the team effort.

In the opening minute of play, NU's Danyel Howard (Kathryn Waldo) stole the
puck and knocked her shot in off both posts. Harvard withstood the Husky
surge and at the start of the second period put on some of their own pressure.
Northeastern managed to keep the puck out of their net, and slowly regained
control of the game. Angela Scerra (Bree Cheatham) banged her shot home after
receiving an excellent set-up in the high slot. As the third period started,
the Crimson looked tired and NU started to get their passing game going.
Courtney King (Jaime Totten) scored on a long-ball breakaway pass. That goal
proved to be the killer. Missi Werner (Howard) finished the Husky scoring
when she drilled her point shot.

Harvard set themselves up for the position they are in. Overplaying a few
players, and not training additional defenders makes a large squad of players
meaningless. All the Crimson forwards did not show up last night. I was very
surprised that a couple of them did not rise to the occasion! On the other
hand, the defensive corp acquitted themselves in a fine manner. In goal Jen
Bowdoin showed a quick glove. Holly Leitzes lead the blue liners with a
strong performance. The senior co-captain lead by example. Christa Calagione
was the Harvard player most likely to score with her numerous rushes. She was
also solid in her own end. Olivia Nottebohm saw a lot of ice time and played
very well in the defensive zone.

I would not suggest anyone should go to Northeastern for a hockey game, unless
they want to be blasted by loud obnoxious pop music at every stoppage of
play.

This message is intended for people in San Fransisco/Oakland/San
Jose/Stockton area in California concerning a new effort to encourage
youth hockey for girls. If you know of someone else who may be interested,
please pass this message on.

Andre Lacroix, the President of the new Oakland/U.S. Ice Arena has
invited interested players and parents to a meeting Monday February 6
at the arena to discuss his plans for a 4-week skill program in March
or April, and a week-long school in the summer.

Andre has been very supportive of efforts by the Berkeley Minor Hockey
Club to encourage ice hockey for younger (12 and under) girls.

The meeting follows the regular practice of the existing program, so
come early and see what's been going on already.

The Oakland U.S. Ice Arena is located at 519 18th Street, Oakland.

I'm personally comitted to efforts to encourage girls' ice hockey in
Northern California. So even if you can't attend the meeting, please send
me your name, address, phone number and e-mail address and I'll keep you
informed of developments. I'm also looking for older girls and women who are
interested in becoming certified USA Hockey coaches and helping develop
programs over the next few years.

Yeah!!! Glad to hear this. Shana played with us last year (Team
Michigan Tornados) and was hoping to get into a college team. She
really improved in the year she played with us (and really had no
coaching, our coach quit in nov), and I guess she's really improved
some more!

Just wanted to make a name correction for Boston
University's team in the beanpot game versus Boston
College (hey, it's probably the only time I'll ever
see my team on this list). Unfortunately a creative
version of our roster and team record was printed in
the tournament program.

The defender mentioned in the game recap was Zoe
Copenhaver (not Stacy Vasil). She's been a welcome
return to our team, and is earning a rep for
sacrificing body and soul to stop the puck.

Also wanted to mention that the goalie who played
the third period, Jenn Pearson, had never played
in goal until just over 2 weeks ago. She managed
to stop 100% of the shots faced in the BC game.

Shana Osler is definitely a power forward for BU,
and looks as if she will continue to step up the
quality of the program. (nice to hear good things
about her from the past!)

Thanks to the BC program for keeping the game at
a sportsmanlike level. The disparity between team
levels is obvious, but their conduct allowed us
to leave the ice still feeling proud of our play
in spite of the scoreboard.

* * *
For those who aren't familiar with the hockey program
at BU, it's interesting to note that the vast majority
of team members have never played hockey (or even skated)
before coming out for the team. Coaches Sean O'Brien (BU),
Tina Vlad (Guelph), and Beth Lundquist (Northeastern)
deserve all the credit for developing each player & the
team into something to be proud of. It was very
encouraging to hear all the positive feedback from
spectators & other teams at the Beanpot game.
Keep your eyes on women's hockey in "terrierland" in
the near future!

We played a friendly game last nite between the Madison Edge and UW Madison
Women's teams. We knew our goalie would miss the first 15 minutes of the
game so had another player suit up as goalie and then change into her
defense stuff and play as defense when our goalie showed up. We had asked
a so-called "friend" to ref who has done a lot of reffing. She promptly
threw the goalie-turned-D out of the game when she saw her on the ice
claiming some USA Hockey rule. I'd just like to clarify the rule and
whether or not she interpreted it correctly. Aside from that, it was a
game between 2 teams with lots of friends and we were playing for
enjoyment--no league, no national championship so why not let our player
play? UW had no problem with it but the ref sure did. If anyone can
enlighten us on the goalie rule, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

     ===========================================================================
I am only a first year referee, but I have played the game for many years,
here is my interpretation of the ruling.

In the USA Hockey Officials Playing Rules 1995-1997

          Section 2 Teams

          Rule 203: Players in Uniform

Players and goalkeepers are designated separately where privileges and
equipment are concerned. If you start the game as a goalkeeper you
must finish the game as a goalkeeper. A "player" can wear the
goalkeeper equipment and be allowed goalkeeper privileges when the
goalkeeper is incapacitated. If a goalkeeper becomes unavailable they
must be replaced immediately by an additional skater or a temporary
goalkeeper. The additional skater does not have the goalkeeper
privileges. A temporary goalkeeper assumes the position when the
designated goalkeeper is not able to participate. That temporary
goalkeeper has goalkeeper privileges until such a time as when they
return as a"player" because the designated goalkeeper becomes
          available to play.

Her call was correct in not allowing the goalkeeper turned "D" to
     continue playing.

Under the circumstances; it may not have been an issue, had you
informed her of the situation, let her know it was cleared with the other
team, and ask her if it would be allowed. I expect she made the call not
knowing the impact of the game or the knowledge both teams had of the
     situation.

A good referee would also be willing to explain the ruling after the
game or between periods, perhaps even at that time if time permitted.
After all alot of dissatisfaction with a call is because we as (players,
coaches, fans) do not understand the basis of the call in the first place.
We should all know the rules as thoroughly as a referee is expected to know
     them.

                                             Sheryl from Minnesota

I'd like to announce a new women's club team at Clarkson University in Potsdam,
NY. Clarkson has been without women's hockey for several years. It was
amazing how fast the club came together. I threw the idea out a women's
leadership seminar at the beginning of the semester and within two weeks we
had 18 members, ice time, and were recognized by the student senate. Since then
we have become a budgeted club and now have a coach at our 7:00am ice times. We
hope to play a game or two before the year is over. Thanks to Rhonda for her
new list - I've written down some numbers. The Women-in-Hockey list has been
a real inspiration.

By the way, I know there are some people from Portland, OR out there. I will
be spending the summer there on an internship and will probably move there
after graduation (May 97). I would love to hear from some of you and get some
information on summer hockey - if it's available.
