On Monday, Dec. 2nd I was watching the 6 o'clock news on channel 9,
WMUR based in Manchester, New Hampshire. The newscaster was talking
about letters that were sent to the station. To my surprise, they
displayed on the screen a letter from someone in Seattle, Washington who
wrote a letter thanking the station for airing the UNH vs. Cornell hockey
game and for suopporting one of the fastest growing sports in the
country. It was so great to see even more promotion of women's hockey.
The great benefits for sending letters asking for more coverage and
thanking the stations for coverage is evident in this situation. Way to go!

Some comments from me on those teams out there having trouble getting
ice through their "association" or "city". The ONLY way you are
going to get your fair share of ice is to go to your local chapter of
Human Rights Department. File a discrimination suit with them. ALL
CITY agencies HAVE to give equal ice to boys and girls
teams....otherwise they can lose their federal funding! All
associations that are TAX EXEMPT entities HAVE to give equal ice to
boys and girls otherwise they lose their tax exempt status! If
associations/ice arenas have charitable gambling they HAVE to give
equal ice to boys and girls otherwise they lose their charitable
gambling license. You only need file with your local human rights
agency/department.

Another thought is to write a letter to USA Hockey telling them that
your local USA Affiliate (such as Alaska Hockey Association) isn't
doing their bit to help you establish and maintain teams with their
faire share of ice. Local associations are suppose to sign "non
discriminatory" affiliate agreements and if you let USA Hockey know
that they aren't adhereing to it...it might help. Site examples.

This, of course, pertains to YOUTH teams. Senior women teams are on
their own for fighting for ice. If a local rink sells ice to mens
teams...then you could try human rights to get ice for your team.

The closest in Minnesota we've come for having to do this was some
parents went forward trying to establish high school teams and they
filed grievance through the Minnesota Education Department. They got
their teams. (Once we figured out the "rules" for Title IX it was
relatively easy to get teams in the high schools).

We have been fortunate to have good inroads into our local USA
Affiliate- the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association and in SOME cases
the district directors have helped pave the way to establish girls
teams in their local districts...or at least have put forth "force"
that the association has to stop saying no. In fact MAHA has now
"taken over" the girls program in their districts and the Minnesota
Girls & Women's Hockey Association is no longer "in charge" of them.
I have some good/bad thoughts on this. There are still some district
directors out there that aren't FOR the girls program...but they are
closely being watched!

Any questions, e-mail me directly unless you think it would be
pertinent on the chat-line as I'm sure some people out there may not
be as interested as you might be...we won't bore them to death.

I am fascinated by the gender discrimination in hockey, so if the shy folk
who don't want to share publicly don't mind, please cc their notes to me.
Many thanks.

Dear Gina,

Nice to hear from you on the plaidworks. I just can't believe that with all of
the girls and womens hockey that poor us in Minnesota still can't get the scores
in the paper on Women's Division I. We called Melissa's house to see how you
did
over the weekend of Thanksgiving. Heard that you guys had a great game with
Concordia 4-3 in overtime. Sure wish we coud get the scores sooner. We have
called you a few times and wonder if you get the messages. Well you will be
home in l3 days for 9 days. You are gonna miss Brant you know. Well, call us
when you get a chance and hey we love you!!!!!

Dear Mom;

All the scores from Women's Division I hockey are displayed on the USA
Today's women's hockey page. You can get the address from Andria Hunter's
page. In addition the Foster Democrat and Portmouth Herald are on line. I
have written to both and they are also starting to cover UNH Women's Hockey.

Unfortunately the overtime game was against Providence and resulted in a
loss.

Hay!!! I occasionally pick up a newspaper called "Let's Play Hockey."
Here in Alaska it is sold in support of the Anchorage Arctic Ice Junior
"B" Hockey Team. I find the coverage to mostly concern MN. The
Girls/Women Hockey coverage is the best I've seen. They also have a
website I've yet to visit; http://www/letsplayhockey.com ...

Good Luck, Lyle

Since the Gils/Women coverage is the best I've seen, how about putting
up some numbers for the Div I Women's teams. There seems to be a pretty
good interest level in the this fledgling aspect of hockey. What's
more, many new teams are on the horizon.

Your only competition seems to be USA Today.

Thx

Message-ID:

We're hosting the first meeting of the newly-formed Girls' 12-and-under
teams from northern and southern California this weekend, and it leads
me to a rules question.

USA Rule 617 - High Sticks says:

The use of the ``slap shot'' in the 10-and-Under (Squirt -
Boy's only) age classification and below is prohibited.

So, does this mean the slap shot is allowed or disallowed in Girls'
12-and-under, who are also called Squirts?

So- your mother made you hide your hair eh? I guess she loves you alot
and has seen some boys who don't know you and know what a good player you
are think you're the weak link and try to assert their masculinity on
you. Oh well, I guess it didn't hurt you - look where you are now.
