Message-ID:
I & a friend joined Chesapeake Bay Lightning this summer, although I skate
all the time at Reston. There are teams for "girls" at several rinks, but
for women in this area it seems to be the WashingtonWolves or the
Lightning. We heard of a group on the Eastern shore that might have a team
- but nothing concrete.
There is a rumor which some of the Reston management passed on that
the hockey mngr there is planning to start a rink sponsored women's league
in the winter. However, just from skating I've met some women that did
clinics there (in the eyes of the Reston rink womens clinics are totally
separate - and I'mnot sure if they're equal) and then were told they
weren't good enough to play with any of the teams there. Point being some
of these women are now starting to participate with the Lightning - they're
actually pretty good. For what it's worth, the attitude towards the little
women playing the hard game seems a bit questionable. But that might pan
out - late in the year, but...it may be closer for a VA person. The
Lightning are moving to Laurel - so it's now closer to the beltway.
As Mary Wood said, Hockey North America has teams, predominently
men, that are looking - there are two skating out of Reston that I know of
looking for players (they just moved from novice to C - but have several
beginners)Also, it looks like the new rink at Laurel is going to have a
"men's" league run by Huron Hockey. I guess it will permit female players
- they should have info on theIceGardens page.
Good luck - it seems that the norm for hockey in the metro DC area
is to expect lots of driving - go where the ice is. But that goes for
living in the area anyhow. It could be good prep for a tourney in Vegas!
