There are a few options for novice players here in the
Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. For those who want to play in a women's
club, the Chesapeake Bay Lightning is offering a developmental program
for beginners to lower intermediate players this year.
For those who
want to play in mixed, or men's leagues, there is an Adult Novice Program
at one of the rinks here (Piney Orchard), however they are more of a
clinic rather than a league, and their scrimmages are more like
"pickup".
Hockey North America, with locations in alot of cities, offers
an Adult Beginner league which features an 8-week "school", after which
teams play other beginner teams for 8 games, a playoff, and a
championship game. Teams automatically graduate to the next higher
division after the first year.

The adult novice league does exist in other cities too. I've seen them
in Northern California and now that we have a privately-owned rink we have
one here in Tucson. Of course, in any city where hockey is just being
introduced to the locals, generally until the player base is built up, the
variation in talent on the teams is wide, so the "beginner's league" may
have people who need a higher level of play, but who aren't advanced
enough to play with the advanced group, and of course there aren't enough
folks to form that middle group.
RE the comment that in a mixed league "sometimes skill cannot overbalance
brawn", implying that women can't be brawny if they want to be, you guys
haven't played with the right women. If you want to travel out here to hell,
(did I say hell? I meant Tucson), I'd be happy to arrange a woman-led
goonfest for you.

Yes there are some women's teams in DC, one that we've played at the
rink in Reston, VA (I think their name was the Washington Wolverines). I
don't know the other women's team in DC, I've only heard they exist. Good
luck finding a team. Let me know what you find so we can contact them too
for a travel weekend sometime.
Thanks,
Diane
