Let's hope that posting was only a joke. If not, it's because of people like
him that women haven't gotten far in the world. What about equal rights under
the constitution? I think this guy just has a huge ego problem - he can't
accept the fact that his sister might be doing as well or maybe even better
than him at a "so-called guy's sport" - known in the past as a guy's sport -
not anymore! I wonder what he'd have to say if she tried out for the team he
was on and made it because she was better than most of those guys? I can't
believe there are still men out there with this attitude. I played hockey for
the first time this past Winter at RIT (for intramurals) and I was the only
female in the whole league. The majority of the men in the league were much
better than I was but they commended me for trying and most of all having fun.
I am glad they didn't have an attitude like the one that was posted here or
else there would have been a good fight (no fists - verbal).

I hope I've made my point here without getting too offensive to anyone. It just
upsets me that there are still males out there that think this way. Anyone else
have an opinion?

Diane

Having grown up with four brothers, this does not sound like a joke to me.
What is does sound like is a young boy who has a sister as a rival and is
venting out his frustrations. Depending on his age, I don't think his
venting is untypical. Hopefully, he is young enough to not truly
understand what he is saying. And let's really hope that his family will
make him realize that his oppressive ideas are wrong.

On another note, I was at Brampton and had a great time despite three
losses. Does anyone know who won the women's rec league?

NO, I am fairly certain this person is completely serious. I would
also venture that he's under 18, but that doesn't mean he'll grow out
     of it!

My club sent two teams to Brampton. When one of our players was
riding down in our hotel lobby (there were teams from three concurrent
hockey tournaments in this hotel: the women's tournament, one for
little boys and a third for big boys) with her bag. Another (male)
occupant of the elevator took the opportunity to inform her that he
didn't think women should play hockey, and in fact should stay home
and do dishes. I think my 9 year old son straightened him out, but my
friend really didn't think that guy was joking, either.

     Sad but true,
     Jan

I know that Chesapeake Bay Lightning didn't win the rec division. We
sent two teams, on in the women's rec and one in senior D. Those of
us who played in senior D were a little out of our league, but we had
a great time, and really played better than we have all year. We lost
all three also, but less badly each game:) ! We figure if we had
played two or three more games, at the rate we were going, we might
     have won one!

Anyway, the team in the rec league won their first two games (agains
the Iron Maidens and someone else - a local team, I think), but lost
to the Polar Bears. So we'd all be interested to know who won in both
the senior rec division, and senior D.

We're from the Baltimore/Washington DC area, and I think/hope that we
helped dispel the myth that hockey is not played south of the
     Mason-Dixon line!

hi,

Just thought I'd make a Brampton report. First of all, I thought they did
a great job organizing it. I only had 2 things bug me:
1- we played at 3 different rinks, so we had to go to Terry Miller
           to get stats
2- the program only had rink schedules, so you had to search thru
each rink schedule to find teams. The pool schedules weren't
in the program (they handed them out to each team so I know they
	   had them).

Otherwise, it was great! They had a chiropractor and sports massages
(free). We did have to hunt for the souvenir tables, they weren`t at
any of the rinks that we played at. I did pick up a cool sweatshirt
(which I def. needed, only having a million more at home :) )

Notes on our games: The Baltimore team that we played turned out to be
from Canada, not one of the Chesapeake Bay Lightening teams. We never
got a definate answer on whether DDD was better than D. I also heard that
there were so many D teams that they split them into D, DD, and DDD by
chance rather than skill. Hard to tell since I didn't get a chance to
see many other games.

We ended up winning our first 3 games (3-0, 3-1, 2-0) and made it to the
semi-finals! Then we lost :( It was a good game, and if we would have
played our normal game, I think we would have won, but we didn't play very
well and lost. All the teams we played were nice, the London team even
gave us a little London pin for beating them (although they probably would
have given it to us had we lost too). I had a good time, except for the
lack of sleep, and look forward to next year.

Hopefully next year we'll stay in a hotel where the little kids don't
roam around and push all the floor buttons in the elevators so that the
elevators run even slower. The waits for elevators were incredible,
plus with everyone hauling their hockey equipment up and down, the cars were
often full when you did get one. But since we were on the 7th floor, we
just decided to wait. And then there was the kids team down the hall that
woke EVERYONE up at 6am Sat morning by pounding on their teammates doors
and yelling ROOM SERVICE! I guess that'a all part of the fun :)

I also got to meet (briefly) a couple of people on the list, and check
out the teams from CA and NC. I think its great that hockey is
expanding so much!

If anyone from the Canadettes is on the list, or anyone else who found
out who won each division, I'd be grateful if you'd post the final
results.

Unfortunately, there will always be males with out there with this
attitude. But there also are a lot of very supportive fathers out there as
well. My daugther has been playing for the past two years, and in that
time i think i've encountered more of the good than the bad. Also, anyone
who thinks hockey is just a "guy sport", just doesn't have their eyes open.
Womens and girls hockey is growing super fast. Look how far women's
basketball has come in the past few years. Womens hockey will get there
too, especially after the 1998 Olympics.
The best thing to do is just keep playing hockey, there are alot of
very young girls out there watching. And ignore those small-minded
individuals, they'll never change anyway.

Hi,

Just got off the phone with the Polar Bear's goalie. She said that they
lost 3-1 in the finals of Sr. Rec to the Smithfalls Lady Dragons.

She didn't know any other results, I'd still like to find out the results
of the Sr. D, DD, & DDD divions (plus any others that people know).

I am from the Connecticut Polar Bears and coach a squirt 2 team which was
entered in the Atom b division this year(10-11 year olds). Our organization is
very strong at the PWee and Midget levels, however our squirt teams are just
honing their skills.
To go to this tournament opened up my players(and parents) eyes as to how
many women actually play hockey and play it well.We were able to win 1 game
1-0, and lost our 2 others 5-2, and 1-0 but all were competitive and fun.
If anyone stayed at the Marriot Airport, my girls were the ones taking trees
and other objects for their scavenger hunt! This tournament was a lot of fun and
my girls learned much about themselves, women's hockey and the importance of
TEAM.
Some suggestions on how to make it better---Results should be posted in all
rinks, results should be posted at participating Hotels/motels, the program
should have the division schedules listed separately to be able to follow
easily.
Keep up the good work Brampton. For those interested we run an annual Xmas
tournament ---next year would be the 12th year---and it is the largest women's
tournament in the USA. Drop me an em if interested. Also our teams(Midget,
Pee-Wee, and Squirts) are always looking for tournaments especially in New
England.
