This past weekend saw some great womens/girls hockey played at the Old York
Road Skating Club in Elkins Park, PA, just outside of Philadelphia. Thanks to
all the participating teams for a great tournament:
Brooklyn Blades (first place)
Old York Road Raiders (second place)
New Jersey Devils (third place)
Boston University (fourth place)
The teams were fairly closely matched although the Brooklyn Blades had the
advantage of having been sponsored by a microbrewery (guess what they promised
instead of an exchange of pins--you might want to invite them to your next
get-together). It was great to see women and girls ranging in age from 9 to
45 getting out on the ice and demonstrating some real solid and exciting
competition. My daughter, Jess, who played for the Raiders girls team as well
as with the squirt B boys team at the tournament clearly enjoyed herself and
played with more heart for the girls team--she really liked it when a female
competitor picked her up and asked her if she was OK (after apologizing for a
solid and clean check) rather than cross-checking her after the whistle was
blown and calling her a 'pussey' (as happened when she played with the boys).
Now is that a difference in paradigm or what?
To those teams who were interested in participating but could not get in
because of a lack of space and time, we apologize and were sorry to have not
been able to accommodate everyone. We will be working on this for next year
to see if we can get a whole weekend just for a womens tournament without
having to split with the squirt and mite boys teams.
Personally, I am sorry to have missed the awards ceremony at the tournament
having not been able to sell off my Flyers vs Penguins tickets. But my wife
reported that the scene was pretty incredible with the Brooklyn Team taking a
victory lap and then being joined by everyone else--everyone really felt like
this was a winning effort for all. On a personal note, my wife burst into
tears with her twin daughters hugging at mid-ice with the figure-skating twin
congratulating her hockey-playing sister. This is what memories are made of.
Happy Hockey and Holidays to all. Best, GG.

Sounds like a fun tourney. Just a couple of questions about it. I have two
daughters who play. One on the boys Bantam team Tomand one on the BanPeeWee
teams, and they have had the same experience with boys checking them, or more
often when they check the boys, and they are referred to in the same derogatory
manner (or worse). However, I am curious about your reference to checking in
the Boys Squirt and Girls teams. Both of these levels are supposed to be
Non-Checking. Does your association allow checking in the girls and squirt
divisions?
Tom
