Unfortunately it has taken me this long to read this message. I just
want to be an example of a person that you, Andria, have influenced. I have
been playing hockey now for nine months (only since October on an organized
team). I love it. I am on the ice four times a week and I'm a member of
two leagues, one co-ed and one womens. I am constantly reminded of the
differences between men and women while on the ice even if I'm with only
women. I am glad that men and women are different, but when playing
hockey I have a constant obstacle because of it. Because I have never
been very athletic, my first response used to be "forget it, I'll never
be able to beat these people." Now through other women I've learned that
it is my responsibiliy to push even harder than others to prove the
masses wrong. When I heard that the Olympics were going to include
womens hockey, it brought tears to my eyes. In the south of the
Mason-Dixon circles that I run, there are not very many women hockey
players that I can look up to. This list has given me the opportunity to
interact with women hockey players. The problem is that there is no way
for me to know what everyone is doing because I am so far away.
Therefore I need everyone to blow their own horn for my inspiration.
Unfortunately I have never been to your/Andria's home page, but I'm glad
it's there. A. had never come across as conceited or selfinflated, so I
trust it is made with taste. If you don't want to hear about it don't go
there.
Please take this message as an invitation from me to either post or
e-mail me directly with any and all hockey accomplishments you or any
other women make. My most recent accomplishment was driving a total of
100-150 miles last night in the sleet to take a player and myself to a
reoccurring pickup game. I didn't get home until 3am. Man, I wish the
ponds here could freeze.
Good luck to all, and remember, don't glide, marathon runners never walk
over the finish line.
