October 22, 2004The Whitecaps OrganizationFOr Immediate Release
The Minnesota WHITECAPS Womens Ice Hockey Team hosted the first ever WWHL league game against the Edmonton Chimos last night at Plymouth Arena. This begins an exciting new chapter for womens ice hockey in Minnesota. The puck was dropped by Lynn Olson, Director of Women’s Hockey for Minneasota Hockey before a crowd of approximately 400 spectators. The Whitecaps dazzled the Chimos and their fans by opening the scoring at 5:15, with a goal from Laura Slominski, former Minnesota Gopher, with an assist from Amber Hegland. Even though neither team scored during the second period, the Whitecaps maintained a high tempo game. In the third period, the Whitecaps accelerated the game with a goal at 18:53 from Rhonda Curtin, former Minnesota Gopher, assisted again by Amber Hegland. The third Whitecaps goal came at 14:32 from Brittny Ralph, with assists from Laura Slominski and Jeanine Sobek. This was quickly followed by Ronda Curtin’s goal at 4:41, assisted by Tricia Dunn and Amber Hegland. The final Whitecaps goal clinched a hat trick for Ronda Curtin at 4:01 of the third period, with an assist from Amber Hegland. The enthusiastic crowd cheered with each goal, as the ending buzzer sounded, it was the 5 to 0 win for the Whitecaps that brought the crowd to their feet in a display of appreciation for the awesome season opening game.
The Canadians brought a physical game to Minnesota and the Whitecaps rose to the occasion. “Our team utilized each and every one of our players individual strengths in this high tempo game,” said team President, Brooke White. “We have worked hard over the last month and the scrimmages against the post-college men’s teams have helped to build our speed, ability to move the puck, and the Whitecaps overall team stamina. Fans witnessed that stamina as they poured it on in the third period. The Whitecaps signed autographs after the game, giving fans a chance to meet prominent women players on the Whitecaps team, like Tricia Dunn, two time Olympian, who says that "winning an Olympic Gold Medal in 1998 and a silver medal in 2002 was the highlight of my career, and the reason she is still playing hockey is because she loves it and still has fun playing." The Whitecaps hope that hockey fans will join them for a great weekend of highly competitive women’s national-level hockey, good sportsmanship and fun! Information on the Whitecaps and the WWHL is available on the team website: www.minnesotawhitecaps.com, or e-mail: email@hidden.
