Johnson Inducted to U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame

October 7, 2004

MADISON, Wis.—Wisconsin women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson will be honored today at his formal induction to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minn. Previously inducted to the Hall as a member of the legendary 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, Johnson is honored this year for his individual accomplishments as a player and coach. Johnson is one of four men named to the National Shrine of American Hockey. Paul Coppo, a native of Hancock, Mich.; Phil Housley of South St. Paul, Minn. and Mike Ilitch of Detroit will also be recognized tonight.

“This year’s class of inductees truly represents a broad spectrum of hockey in the United States, including ownership and players from amateur, college, Olympic, U.S. National and professional ranks,” said United States Hockey Hall of Fame Board of Directors’ President James Findley. “We are proud to induct them and welcome them as the Class of 2004.”

Johnson is the third UW women’s hockey head coach in program history and joined the staff in 2001. In his first two seasons with the Badgers, he led the team to tie and set the record for most wins in a season with 22 and 25, respectively. In the 2003-04 season he led the women’s team to a fifth-place national ranking. This season the team will begin at a stellar third place in the preseason rankings.

Prior to taking the reins of the women’s program, Johnson served as an assistant coach with the UW men’s program from 1996-2002. Before his collegiate coaching Johnson coached professionally, directing the expansion Madison Monsters and earning Colonial Hockey League Coach of the Year honors (1995-96). Johnson also was an assistant coach with the U.S. Men’s National Team.

As a player Johnson helped Wisconsin to the 1977 national championship in his freshman campaign. The first-ever Badger to win WCHA Rookie of the Year honors, he went on to become the school’s second all-time leading scorer with 256 points on a school-record 125 goals and 131 assists in just three seasons. The 1978-79 WCHA MVP was a two-time first-team All-WCHA pick and a two-time All-American. He also was selected as one of the WCHA’s “Top 50 Players in 50 Years.”

One of Wisconsin’s most decorated athletes in any sport, Johnson was inducted into the State of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 and also is a charter member of Wisconsin’s National W Club Hall of Fame. In 2004, Johnson received the Vince Lombardi “Award of Excellence.”

In 1980, he led the U.S. Olympic Team’s gold medal-winning effort with 11 points, including two goals in the “Miracle-On-Ice” against the Soviet Union and an assist on the game-winning goal against Finland in the final contest. The team’s accomplishment was honored by Sports Illustrated as the ‘Greatest Sports Moment of the Century.’

Following his Olympic experience, Johnson spent 11-years in the NHL, earning honors while skating with the Pittsburgh Penguins (1980-82), Minnesota North Stars (1982), Hartford Whalers (1982-85), St. Louis Blues (1985) and New Jersey Devils (1985-90).
Johnson’s 2004-05 Badger women’s hockey team take to the ice this weekend, Oct. 8-9 against Wayne State at the Kohl Center. Both games are set to begin at 7:05 p.m. Stay tuned to uwbadgers.com for all the latest on Coach Johnson and the Wisconsin women’s hockey team.
